use an Olympus E1 DSLR, superb camera, one of the originals with dust remover from the mirror, plus it also is waterproof.
Very pleased with it, a proper robust camera and uses the four thirds lenses for Digital size pictures.
The problem with most digital camoeras is their low light abilities. You need tio take some shots in low light to see what sort of picture you will get. Any of the good photography shops will help you in that way, dont juts look at sunny days pictures as this is where digitals are best, you want to see how much "noise" you get in low light/dark conditions.
plus also watch out for the "more Megapixels is best" salesman, unless you want to take A3 pictures, 5-8MP is more than enough for A4 and standard picture sizes.
Do you have a good photo editing software package? you will need that as well, as in quite a few cases you will need to slightly alter the pictures you take.
Also, have you a good phto printer? the quality of your prints also matters
