December UY Points Question

We are relatively new to DVC. Our use year is December and we have 200 points. This is our current situation:
2024 zero,
2025 84,
2026 150.

I’ve borrowed 2025 points for a trip in March 2025. We would like to book a trip in November 2025,but wouldn’t do that until January 2025. At that point, can I borrow from Dec 2026 use year?

I’ve tried searching and read different scenarios but I can’t figure this one out. Thank you

With a December use year, a November 2025 trip falls within your 2024 use year (Points valid 12/1/2024 - 11/30/2025). You can borrow the 84 points left in your 2025 use year for that trip, but you cannot borrow any points from your 2026 use year for that trip. You may only borrow from the next use year in the future.

Everything is based on the use year that your trip falls within. From that, you can determine which points are valid for the trip. You may use current use year points, borrow from the next use year or use points that were banked from the preceding use year.

If you need more points for the November 2025 trip, you could purchase up to 24 one time use points (when the 7 month window opens), or obtain a transfer of points from another member that are valid for that trip. Points from the same home resort would allow MS to make the reservation for you before the 7 month window opens. Of course, you could also purchase an additional contract.

Understanding Use Year

I have a December use year & it’s hard to wrap your head around because the points assigned to the use year are mostly good for the vacations occurring in the next calendar year. Right now Dec. is still in its 2023 use year.
A visit in Nov. 2025 will occur in your 2024 use year, thus you can use current 2024 points (0) + banked 2023 points (0) + borrowed 2025 points (84.)
If, OTH, you move your trip to the start of your use year in Dec. 2025, then you can use current 2025 points (84) + banked 2024 points (0) + borrowed 2026 points (150*.)
*I assume you have other plans for 50 of your 2026 points & that’s why you haven’t included them, because you should have 200 points sitting in your 2026 use year.

Both the 2025 March and November trips fall in your Dec 2024 UY, which runs from 12/01/2024 to 11/30/2025. You can only borrow the 84 points from 2025 to make a November 2024 reservation. You cannot borrow from 2026 for it.

Also, you should be aware that you can book November reservations in December of the previous year, regardless of your UY. There would be no need to wait until January.

Thanks for the explanation. I find December use year hard to figure out.
I made a mistake…we have 200 points for 2026 (not 150 😬)

Thanks everyone. I think I have it figured. Atleast now I can go back and refer to this post in the future, if I become confused again. Bottom line….i guess we just need to buy more points 🤣.

I keep a spreadsheet where everything is listed chronologically down the left column, including New Use Year (for us is September 1). That way I can see immediately which UY our planned trip falls in and plan accordingly. It’s kept me straight for 25+ years!

I get confused all of the time. I'd call it a senior moment but I'm not a senior. December UYs are hard to wrap your mind around. I still have to pause and think even after years of ownership.

The way it has always worked for me, especially with my Dec UY is to first determine which UY my trip will happen…forget the calendar year.

Once I do that, then I know I can pay for that trip with banked points from the UY prior to the trip points from the UY of the trip, and borrow points to complete the reservation from the UY after the trip.

So, a March 2025 is in your 2024 UY. A November 2025 trip is in your 2024 UY.

Both can be booked with banked 2023, 2024, and borrowed 2025 points.

Be careful in borrowing points for a November trip with a Dec UY.

If you have to cancel that trip at the last minutes, they will still expire November 30th, 2025.

Even using current UY points close to the end of your UY will likely be lost if you cancel at the last minute. Points go into holding for Reservations that are canceled with 30 days or less to go into holding. A Nov reservation that gets canceled using Dec UY points means that you pretty much have to rebook immediately for November dates. It's better to try to rent that reservation out than to lose those points or try to rebook during such a busy time.

Something else to keep in mind is that any time a reservation falls after your banking deadline, those points are stuck in that year. The banking deadline for Dec UYs is July 31. That would mean if you cancel a reservation for Aug, Sept, Oct or Nov you would need to make a new reservation that ends no later than 12/1 (the last night being 11/30) or else you will lose those points.
