Okay so Im buying a contract with 320 points for 2022 160 of them are banked and expire in 2023. If I want to book a January 2024 vacation do I have to use those points or do I use 2023 points?

Everything goes by UY of the trip. Forget about calendar year, especially with Dec.

A Jan 2024 trip is in your 2023 UY. You can used banked 2022, 2023 and borrow 2024 to finish the reservation.

The banked 2021 points are now part of your 2022 UY and are not eligible for the January 2024 trip as they will expire Nov 30th, 2023.

okay, but wouldn't t it all be booked up since it would be for the next month? Thats whats confusing me.
Points are available all the time. You do not have to wait until your use year to use them. So when you go to book them 11 months out, they will be there.

Thank you! I get it now. Just one more thing, what month would I be able to book a non home resort if my use year is december. Sorry im new to this lol Thanks!

You can book your home resort at 11 months from the date of the reservation and any other resort at 7 months from the date of the reservation regardless of what your use year is.

UY just determines which of your points are eligible to be used for a trip.

For example, if you want to travel in Aug 2023, it’s in your Dec 2022 UY…you can book with banked 2021 points, 2022 points and borrowed 2024 points to finish the trip.

This doesn’t impact your booking window. You can always book non ho e resort at 7 months.

Regardless of what your use year is, and assuming availability exists for the room you want, you can always reserve a DVC room for any time of the calendar year beginning 11-months out from date of arrival for home resort and 7-months out for others. Thus, regardless of your use year, you can go online or call to reserve a Jan 2024 trip at your home resort as early as Feb 2023, and a non-owned resort as early as June 2023.

Use year simply determines which points you actually use for the trip. With a December use year and a Jan 2024 trip, your Dec 2023 to Nov 2024 use year points will be the "current" use year points for that trip (even though you may go online to reserve your home resort in Feb 2023), any Dec 2022 use year points can also be used for that reservation as long as you first bank them into the Dec 2023 use year before making the reservation, and, at the time of making the reservation, you can, if needed, also borrow points from the Dec 2024 use year.

Sorry, but no, you don't get it now. This question doesn't make sense. The booking window is not related to your use year. You can book home resort at 11 months and other resorts at 7 months. Your use year determines which points are used for that reservation.

Just to clarify, points aren't used until the moment you check-in for your vacation. So if you're considering that January 2024 trip regardless of when you make the reservation those banked 2021 points will have expired by the time your trip occurs and would have been wasted unless you make another earlier trip or do something else that would use the points prior to December 2023.

Also along these lines if you're looking at a January 2024 as being your first trip you're going to have to bank the new 2022 points that were just placed into that account so that they carry over to December 2023 and are then available for use on that 2024 reservation.

Okay, I've been getting different answers from different people. No need to be rude.

okay, sorry. Someone I used to rent from told me something different. So thats why I was confused. Thank you.

December UY can be confusing. For me, it requires "extra" thinking to get it right.

This question comes up often. I have been a member for many years. My friend has a December UY - she has owned DVC also 22 plus years. We have booked DVC and cruises together many times. When we get into a conversation of booking a trip or cruise together - her use of points/banking/borrowing with a December UY sounds so confusing to me. I think it would take me a few trips to get used to it.

I would have to give it some extra thinking myself. You will get it once you have/use it a few years - or it might click with you right away.

Did you go through ROFR? Happy planning and enjoy it!

Its in there now. Im a little nervous about it. Im looking at other contracts just in case. On another board I asked about being ROFRED and someone said disney just let theirs at AKL through at 118 a point. Im hoping I get luck too.

I've had a December UY for almost 9 years. I still get confused!! I'm a scientist by training who has spent 20 years in data analysis and performance improvement. But there's something about the dang December UY that I STILL get confused. Luckily, I've never lost any points due to my confusion. I just have to slow down, think carefully, and plug it all into a spreadsheet.
