We are going Dec 17-22. Do we have to have a "touring plan"? If we have one can it just be general, like start in land X with ride X and pick up fastpass tickets? or do we have to get really detailed? We have kids from age 9-18 so we will want to do most things? Can you tell I am a newbie? I thought the hard part was getting the details in fly, car, hotel booked. I am starting to realize I am pretty naive regarding WDW.

Welcome to the DIS!

I recommend having a touring plan (detailed) for the trip...just in case. If you buy the Unofficail Guide to Walt Disney World (UG) (or even subscribe to TourGuide Mike(TGM)--the sponsor of the Theme Parks board--click the link at the top of this page), they already have touring plans typed out that you can use, so you won't have to create one from scratch.

Crowds won't be at their heaviest while you're there, but it will be crowded--especially towards the end of your trip.

The touring plans (either UG or TGM) help save LOTS of time and frustration. They really do work.

I wouldn't worry about a touring plan. I'm all about planning ahead (I'm uber organized and everything is all set for our trip in my Passporter binder) but I can't have a point by point list for a WDW visit. It is much more important for me (and my family) to take our time and enjoy the entire WDW experience. If we miss a few rides...oh well.

Don't get me wrong, I read all the info and have a general game plan but nothing is set in stone.
