Hi! I'm new to the DIS board and am planning my family's first trip to Disney! I'm hoping to rent for a week either in mid-December or January, right after New Years. I need input: which is a better time for Disney World? Especially for us newbies?:confused3

I think we need more information. What is your definition of "better time"? Weather, crowds, decorations, special events?

December may be getting pretty filled up already at the smaller DVC resorts. Early January (marathon) will also start filling up quickly at the smaller resorts, so you are wise to be making your decision soon.
December has a lot more to offer in terms of special events and decorations. January is more laid back and some days will be low crowds. Weather can be warm or cold in both months.

Specifically, how are the crowds and weather during those two times?

We were there the first week and a half of Dec. last year and the crowds were good. We didn't have to wait in lines that were too long. Weather was very variable. We had some days in the high 60s and a few in the 80s. You really need to pack everything from swim suits to hats, mittens and jackets.
I can't imagine that the weather in Jan. is very different. Someone who has been in the beg. of Jan. will have to help you w/ crowds. Personally, I would choose Dec. over Jan....w/ all of the beautiful holiday decorations, you get a lot more bang for your buck :)
