December 2014 Car Rental Discount Watch

So here is where lessons are hard-learned: I'd actually scored an even lower rate through Southwest, and so canceled my Dollar reservation months ago. When I tried to extend online with Southwest, the site told me to call. And when I talked to an agent, they told me that because the ressie was not directly with them, they could not extend and I'd have to cancel and re-book. By that time, I think I was so frustrated that I just canceled, not realizing the likely much higher rates awaiting me. If only I'd held onto that Dollar ressie.... :(
Yes, I extended my rental in September by 1 day and was very, very surprised that it only cost me $16 more. I kept repeating on the phone "16 as in 1-6?". Lol. It was very cheap to extend the rental and I had a minivan!

ETA: I called Alamo the day I was supposed to return the rental and asked how much it would be to keep it an extra day.

I actually considered that, but honestly, the last thing I want to do the day before I head home is leave my family to deal with the rental car. I knew it was a risk canceling it, but our Disney vacations allow me to have a complete escape from the world with my family. (Long story involving crazy work and travel schedule here that I won't jump into...) In the end, it wasn't worth interrupting that escape to make the rental car work. If we have to do the bus, we'll do the bus. And supplement with cabs when we're missing our car. If you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them, and I'll keep on watching the rates. :)

I've heard there are good rates on Black Friday. Maybe you can score something then. :) I'll be looking out for my January trip so if I see something I'll post it.

Thanks Pigletto for this info! We used it to secure our reservation.

I'm so glad it worked out for someone else.:goodvibes
I noticed my rates are dropping again. Not as good as I was able to book in August, but getting close.

Just wondering if anyone knows where the Alamo AD2338FDF $30. off coupon code is from ? Can anyone use it ?

I have a great rate booked with the pass-holder rate and this coupon code from Alamo ($160. out the door for a full size - 11 days) , just want to make sure the coupon will be fine to use !

Thanks ......

Its a VISA coupon and from what I have read you have to use your VISA to pay for the reservation

Does anyone know how much of a hold on your credit card the car rentals require while you are renting the car

Yep. Visa coupon. You have to book and pay with your visa. It's been around a few years.. I've used it on a past trip.:)

My Alamo rental for December 5th to the 14th is down a little less than $2 from the $190 I booked at in August. This is using the Visa codes that are mentioned on the previous page. I am hoping to see it drop a little lower now that it's moving again. I'm at $188 with Alamo and $161 with Dollar.

I need to book a minivan for Dec 5-14 and the best I can find for pick up and drop off at Disney is over $1000......does that sound right? I really don't want to spend that much.

It would be a hassle but for the price difference we might do it anyway. It's over $600 difference.

What class car is that ?

I am a day longer than you (12/5-12/15) and I am at $160 out the door with Alamo for a full size.

Just checked your dates (since I was checking mine again) and using the AP rate and the $30. off code and I am coming up with $147. for your dates - fullsize with alamo .

I'm not an AP holder anymore so can't use the AP rate. Best I have found is the $188 through Alamo with the Visa Codes.:)

I rebooked using the SW code 7013880 and coupon AD2338FDF and it brought my Standard from Dec 5-16 down to $263.40 [the coupon code is when paid with a visa card]

Just rebooked again with these codes [Alamo] and brought my reservation down to under $225. Full size was just a few dollars more. If I remember correctly, isn't there an aisle to choose various category cars from when booking a 'standard' with Alamo?
