Dec UY throws me off

I just want to double check myself here. We have 2 contracts with Dec UY for a total of 300 points. So my Dec 2021 points.... If I bank them (By July) they would then go to Dec 22 and then I'd have 600 points to use between Dec 1 2022 and Nov 30 2023 correct? We are thinking we'd do trips every other year and 600 points would be enough to get 2 1 bdrms for a week every other year. I think if my UY were in July or something I'd be less confused but Dec throws me off.

That the December use year throws you off is actually an issue that many members have faced and mentioned before on these boards. Our minds have a hard time getting used to the fact that more than 90% of our actual use year is in a year other than the designated use year. You correctly describe what happens to your points and when you can use them when you bank.

If you want to add some more December use year mental complications, consider what happens when December points are transferred. If I were to transfer today my Dec 2021 use year points to someone with a February use year, I would most likely be transferring points that the recipient would not use until after Feb 2022, but as far as the application of transfer rules is concerned, that recipient would have a transfer that counts as the only one he can do in his Feb 2021 use year and he would still be able to get another transfer of any 2022 use year points applicable to his Feb 2022 use year.

lol, that is much more complicated than I want to attempt to figure out. I'm doing good to figure out my own points. I have 24 in holding, 10 left from banking 2020 points and the only trip i'd be going on would be the week after thanksgiving maybe, but I hadn't planned to go until 11/30 bc I'm hoping for an event the 1st weekend in Dec.

My contracts are all Dec UY. Great for Xmas and Spring Break. Not good for fall… Halloween, Food&Wine or Thanksgiving since you are beyond your banking window and DVC runs full at that time of year so rescheduling before the points expire is very problematic.

Remember that your UY begins Dec 1 not 11/30. You can, of course book that night with current or borrowed points but if something happens you will lose the points.

Follow up question...

How far head can you bank your points for any given year?

My brain isn't working right now lol. Im trying to figure out why a Dec UY is not good for Halloween, FoodWine and TG.

If I always like to plan far ahead, at least 7 months, would I still have difficulty during those times?

You can bank your points as soon as your UY begins. I often wait until I'm closer to the banking deadline unless I'm ready to book a reservation that occurs in the next UY.

As far as to why Dec UYs aren't preferable when booking Sept/Oct/Nov reservations, it's because if anything should happen that results in you canceling those reservations any time after your July 31 banking deadline, you have only a few months in which to use those points before they expire. Given how tight availability is in the fall, it can be difficult to find anything on which to use those points before they expire.

Assuming availability and points you can book anytime you wish, 11 months for home resort, other resorts at 7 month.... including the fall. The problem is that if something happens and you need to rebook, you are beyond your banking window which is July 31st. You must use those points by Nov. 30th or they expire. Fall is DVC prime time so the chances of finding availability if you need to cancel and rebook is difficult at best.

Can you do it? Do you feel lucky? I've owned for 20 years and there have been times when life happened and I needed to cancel and rebook. Have I done it? Yes, though not frequently, and it works... expect when it doesn't. Fall bookings with a December UY are a gamble.

Thank you both for your explanations, now it's making sense to me! Much appreciated! I have a December UY myself and my visits tend to be December-February, at least to WDW and Hawaii--though I did accidentally visit Food And Wine a few years ago. Had no clue it was happening until about a week before the trip lol! That was before DVC though.

I too have a December UY and something I did that helps me keep it all straight is I made a spreadsheet of my planned trips and color coded rows/columns with the calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31) as one color and then the Dec UY (Dec 1 - Nov 30) as another color. That way I'm easily able to see where the Dec UY matches up with the actual calendar year.

I have a Dec use year too. I throws me off. Esp when I had to walk my AKL club level room from Nov to Dec... that was fun. I had to call them up everyday I moved it. But when we bought resale it seemed to be the easiest and cheapest to get so we work around it.

How do you walk into Dec starting in Nov with a Dec UY? Your points aren't deposited into Dec 1. I have a Dec UY at VGF but didn't think I could walk for a reservation I wanted 1st week of Dec.

You have to call Member Services to book across your UY. You could walk a reservation all the way to 11/30-12/01 then call Member Services to extend it to 11/30-12/07 (7 nights). If you want to walk it further or add more nights, you have to call Member Services to do it. Any modification to the reservation cannot be done online.. I have done it a few times and it's quite easy. The biggest hassle is having to call MS because you can't do it online.

We love our December UY. But, most of our trips have been Feb/Apr or Summer. We use our small April UY contract for Fall trips (Columbus day or Thanksgiving). Pre Covid, we were always borrowing from our Dec contract anyways.

As mentioned, you have to call and ask them to move ir forward until all dates are Dec 1st abs father.

Points are not deposited at the start of a UY. They are all there now. That date simply to determine which points can be used for a trip.

if wanted a trip to be Dec 2023 UY, I can use banked 2022x 2023, and borrow up to 50-% of 2024

The key for walking across a UY is you can’t bank the points until after get the dates.

So, I would not bank my 2022 points right away, use those to book the dates before Dec 1st and once I had MS help me to move it until all dates are now in December, then I bank the points and modify for the system to use them up!

OK Thanks! Still trying to learn all things DVC
