Dec 5, 2009 -- now traveling to Tortola

I just had my mamo. Five years ago after just getting home from a wonderful Disney cruise I went for my annual exam. They found cancer. But it was caught early and still very small (the size of a pencil eraser). So small a breast exam would never have caught it but the mammogram did. I didn't even need chemo after it was removed. Just radiation. Today I'm celebrating that magic 5 year mark.

Someone might have already said this but it won't hurt to say it again. Oct is breast cancer awareness month and it's almost up. But it's never too late to get a mammogram or have your doctor give you a breast exam (depending on your age). Talk to your friends. If they over 40, ask them if they have ever had a mammogram. If not go with them and give moral support. Make make afternoon of it and go someplace nice to eat after The mammogram. Guy's talk to your mother, sister or wife.

Oh and look for a place that uses a digital machine. It's gentler and more accurate than the old style machine.

Samantha has a school play the days after we get back. She will
be missing the full practice performances days before. We haven't
told the director yet..oppps. They are doing Jungle Book for kids,
we haven't seen the movie yet.

Oh that is a fun show. Marika and Rio were in it a coupe of years ago. They were both jungle (all the dancers were jungle--the choreographer ahd a sea of dancing green which never left the stage:rotfl2:)

Not yet, I still have hope, though fading......

You have to have faith, trust and pixie dust:wizard:
How is everyone getting to/from the port?

We will be leaving from are house on Sat morning it takes about 45 min to an hr depending on traffic to get there and Ron loves to get there early...:)
We like to get there early too:thumbsup2 We'll see you in the terminal.
We've done that drive too from Toronto! Took us 6 hours to get to Morgantown, 12 hours to get to Charlotte, NC. We considered that drive as well for the 6 of us, but, as much as the drive south would have been exciting, and we would have made it fun, the long drive back to Canada, racing to get the kids home in time for school on the Monday was too much to consider.

Driving is still an option however if our flights get screwed up last-minute
Wow--I think the drive from Toronto must be even longer than from Detroit. We did it from Detroit many, many times when the kids were little. We used to have chik-fil-A with a playland on the route marked in our atlas:rotfl:
Hi!

we are taking a town car to and from the port. but my husband doesn't know it yet. he thinks we are taking the disney cruise bus!
I can't wait to see his face when the driver holds up our card with our name on it. it will be funny.
Can't wait!!!!
What a fun surprise:goodvibes

Congratulations on five years cance free and thanks for posting a great reminder. I actually had my breast ultra sound (that is what is covered here instead of mammograms--and the mammogram was unclear and they sent me for an ultrasound last year in the US anyway so I figure all is good;)) on Monday.

Congrats on being cancer free for five years now!

Thanks for the great advice. I have tried and tried to convince my mom, age 54 this Dec, to get a mammogram. I guess what I'm going to have to do is to schedule it and take her myself. I don't know what else to do to get her to get one. Perhaps telling her a story like yours might work.

Pixie dust is VERY important (and remember to look for ressies for only 2 people as well). Isn't there a little pixie living at your house?

See if you can schedule you and her back to back. Go with her and show her it is not so bad and you can do it and then she can have hers after. That is what I had to d oto get my mom in there:headache:

Congratulations!!!!!! And thank you for the reminder!!!

Are you keeping the car and parking at the port while you're on the cruise? That's what I did for our 4 night cruises but now the cost of car rental has increased so much as has the parking. I think port parking is up to $15 per day.

This is our 4th cruise and we drive down and stay in a hotel on Friday that allows you to leave the car for the week for free- I think it is called stay and cruise package. We love it because we like to ensure we make it in plenty of time and don't have to pay for parking.

I finally got around to calling and buying our MVMCP tickets and booking our towncar to the port today. It feels good to have those pieces squared away:thumbsup2

So feeling not very creative here is my Question of the week: How is everyone getting to/from the port?

We are taking Tiffany Town Car (private towncar service) to the port. It is less expensive for us with four than DCL trasnfers (but close these days) and we like the conveince of picking whatever time we want to depart and having a private ride.
On the way home our flight does not leave Orlando until almost 8 pm. So, we are getting a one way rental car so we can have some fun that day (which may mean the joy of shopping at a Target and eating tex-mex--oh the funny things you miss:lmao:).

Just decided to surprise the kids with MVMC and two days in Disney.. when we leave the ship they will think we are starting our 15 hour drive home only to be surprised when we stop at Disney... I cannot wait to see their faces! My 27 year old daughter and her finance will also join us at the resort to add even more fun!

Great idea! My sis has had a mammogram and although she couldn't get one now because she's preggo, having her along for support out in the waiting room will maybe help too!

If all else fails use guilt. "Mom remember all those things you made me do when I was a kid to keep me safe and healthy. Now I need you to do something to keep yourself safe and healthy. If you really love me come with me to get a mammogram."

Ok. Who is signing up for which cruise on the Dream? I'm thinking a double dip would be heavenly. :goodvibes I just don't want to wait for summer to sail on her.

Seeing as we'll have to wait till the year 2011, we will have to wait. So far, all I see for the Dream for tentative cruises is the 5-Day Bahamas.

Is the Dream doing anything special?

Congratulations! My sister went for her first mammgram when she turned 40 and they discovered cancer. She had a mastectomy and horrible chemo. But she made it through. She aslo had the other breast removed about a year later as the chance was too high for cancer in that one, too. She didn't think she could do the chemo again and getting rid of the breast was the lesser of two evils.

That was 6 years ago this month. She is still cancer free and doing well. All because she had a mammogram in time to find the cancer and save her.

I get mine faithfully every single year.

Today was not such a good day for me. The economy finally got me- my job was eliminated as of this morning. :sad2:

We will still be going on the cruise because at this late date, the whole trip is paid for. Even if it wasn't, I think we'd still go. Nothing can cheer me up as well as a Disney trip. And now I won't have to worry about work while I'm gone (have to find the positive in this somewhere...)

We only live in Georgia so we are driving down the night before and staying at the Radisson. Taking their shuttle to the port.

I certainly do hope you get your pixiedust: pixie dust and that whatever the future holds for you is better than what you had before.

So sorry to hear of the job situation Karen.

There is positive out there. I remember being let go 15 years ago. I was devastated. I have never had a job since as I went to self-employment and it eventually led to being the sole income in this family.:)

I will work out!:flower3:

Oh that sounds really fun:goodvibes I'll see if Marika can talk up MVMCP a little to Sean and try to make him jealous he didn't get to go. On second thought, better not--don't want her to slip and give away the surprise so I won't tell her!

What drove me nuts if my mom avoided paps for 6 years and when she finally went they caught her cervicale cancer just in time. They told her had she waited another 6 months it probably would have spread too far for them to get. You'd think she would understand how important screenings are after that--but she was still scared to death. Of course, afterwards she was like, "that's it?":rotfl2: I think you and your sister double teaming her is a great plan:thumbsup2 Your mom can't deny a pregnant woman can she?!?!

Well, for 2011 we decided to stick with the good ole Magic. We are taking a med cruise (well, we are holding back to back cruises now but odds are we cannot afford both;)) since that saves us a fortune on airfare these days. Are there Double Dips on the Dreams itenerary?

Today was not such a good day for me. The economy finally got me- my job was eliminated as of this morning. :sad2:

Oh Karen I am so sorry:hug: In 2001 Dave was laid off 6 days before our trip to WDW (which, like yours, was already paid for so we went). It was good to be able to let Disey Magic wash over us and forget the worry for a bit. Hopefully all will come together for you and you will find reemployment soon. I
