Debt Dumpers - 2019

I have finally got around to filing our tax. In Australia the financial year ends 30th June so I am very late!
My refund is $900 so this will be added to the emergency fund, leaving $1100 to reach that goal.

I am waiting on a form for DH relaying to claiming a deduction for Super (retirement savings) so I can lodge his. He isn't getting anything back as he is self employed but we will get a chunk back in the form of a family tax benefit rebate as our incomes were low in 2018.
This will go into the emergency fund and then whatever is left will go back into our investment fund to get it back to 2018 balance. We had to sell a chunk of shares to pay medical expenses as we didn't have an emergency fund.

Ugh...budget busting coming up in 3, 2, 1...

I just made our eye doctor appointments for next week. I think both kids will need new glasses, and we do NOT trust Zenni anymore after 2 bad experiences. My kids vision is pretty complicated and I refuse to scrimp on their glasses. I'm not comfortable with the online route. Last time we paid approx. $350 per pair...2 years ago. My oldest might be able to get away with just new lenses (although, because they are Transitions, not cheap), but my youngest has grown so much that his frames are too small for his face now. I'm dreading it.

Also, I just took my bike to the bike shop to get a minor repair and happened to ask the tech how often I should buy a new helmet. He said "about every year you should get a new one." Yikes!!!! The helmet I have been using, I've had since 2010. Oops... so I bought a new helmet for $100. Then, came home, checked the date on my kids helmets, and they are almost 3 years old, so gonna have to buy them new ones too. And, unfortunately, we do a lot of long distance rides on trails and I don't trust cheap helmets from big box stores (plus, my teens have HUGE heads and never fit into the standard sized ones anyway.) So, looking at another $150-200 there. But, it's my kid's heads, and ever since they stopped using carseats, it's the area where I do NOT cut corners. We spend a lot of time on our bikes year round, so it just is what it is.

And onto some voluntary budget busting...DH and I are going to go to Vegas in June for 3 days while his mom stays with our kids. We want to do a getaway for our anniversary/before he leaves me for a year. We got flights on Jet Blue for free using points we transferred from our rewards credit card, so that is good. Hotel will be only about $400-500 for 3 nights, all in. Food will be another $500 probably (we like to splurge on fancy meals when the kids aren't around). But, the big one was...concert tickets to see Lady Gaga's Jazz and Piano show! I am SO excited about that! She is my favorite and I've never seen her live. We got the cheapest tickets we could, but they were each $350 after fees, so we just charged $700 to our card last weekend to pay for them, because there were literally only 6 tickets left at that price, and the next ones up were over $500 without fees. My husband also wants to see the Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love show, so that will be another $300 or so.

But, it's worth it because once he goes over to Japan in July, he will get around an extra $500/month nontaxable pay, plus we will stop owing CA income tax, which will net us an additional $250/month. And, his expenses over there will be pretty low. He will get free housing, and can eat meals in the chow hall for a few dollars per meal. Our expenses here will go down significantly as well, since he won't be buying gas 2x/week, we can lower the mileage on his car down to basically nothing and save on insurance, and I won't be buying as much food either.

On a positive note, our general spending this past month has been way down because we've literally only been buying food, gas, etc., stuff we actually NEED. So, the money we spent on the concert tickets actually fits into what I allocate for monthly credit card spending in general. So, I won't have any issues paying off the cards in full next month AND we are on track to put $2000 next month into our savings, so yay for that!

I'm a huge Gaga fan. She is my favourite too! The tickets are expensive but hey we are all living this debt dumping life so we can afford to do things that make us happy.
Unless her residency goes for years, I doubt I will see it but I love watching the 1000's of videos that are posted to IG.

You know, it's the resale tickets that are insane. The face value tickets we got were, I think, a fair price (before fees...ugh). The seats are almost center in the balcony, row D, so I am fine with what we paid. When tix went on sale, the lowest price were $80. She is confirmed for a 2 year residency, and they have only opened up sales for the first set of shows, so if you really want to go, keep an eye out for when they release late 2019/2020 dates and get in on the initial sale. It was August last year. I am planning to do that for Enigma tix because I want to see that show too! For now, I am stalking Stub hub and similar sites for the Enigma show the day before the Jazz show we are seeing, and if I can get tickets in the same price range I paid for that, we will buy them. Otherwise we will see Cirque Love. She has also hinted that she would like to extend beyond 2 years, so don't lose hope!

2019 has had us bleeding money so far. Took the car that DS uses in for an oil change and it needs two tires, a brake flush and a part replaced that luckily is under warranty. The tires and part were out of stock, so we'll take it back next weekend but going to be $500ish.

We also had the mold guy come in and he could tell the sub-floor under the cabinet (under the kitchen sink) is still wet and may be rotted. Need to remove everything and dry it out for three days before we can even get an estimate of how much rebuilding that part will be. Estimate for removal is $1100 but it could be more depending on what he finds underneath. He suggested calling our insurance, which I did, and mold is not covered but water remediation and replacing the cabinet is, and our deductible is low, so it was worth filing the claim. I am still a little confused about how it will all work if the mold part is not covered but bottom line is we need to do this, so whatever is covered would be good. Still unclear whether we will get an estimate for taking out and replacing more cupboards and the countertop; DH has been wanting to do this for awhile and if they have to rip up other stuff....

And we still have not had an electrician in or even thought about getting some new fixtures that we really need to do. Too much for my mind to keep track of right now.

Dh and I are going to Aruba in April. Our flights were free except taxes using SWA points. Our all-inclusive resort is $2550 for the other couples in our group. I booked using Chase Ultimate Rewards points so our cost is $1139. If I had more points, it could be free. Some gas stations here charge $0.05 more per gallon but there are plenty that don't upcharge so I use those. I can look on GasBuddy before I leave and usually the cheapest cc price is a penny or 2 more than the cheapest cash price. So for around $1/week more oop + AF, I can take a very affordable vacation.
Nice! We went there for our honeymoon. I'd love to go back and stay at a higher level all-inclusive than we did at the time.

Our dishwasher (only 3 years old), died this weekend. Hopefully it is an easy fix because it is actually the best dishwasher I have ever used in terms of how clean it gets dishes, and I don't want to have it replaced by something not as good.

Thankfully, we are renters so it's not our budget problem! Yay!

Although, I feel like a pioneer woman, washing everything by hand. I have never not had a dishwasher.I am sure we will pay down the line with an increased water bill (water is expensive here in So Cal). I got lazy and spent money on paper plates yesterday at the store...

I also have to take my car in for service today. It needs a scheduled maintenance, but also the AC is acting up, so who knows what I'm in for on that front. Standing by...

I hear that, I am thankful we are renting for some things. But, on the other hand, sometimes it's painful and have to wait for decisions and the in-between. Ours is a single detached home we are renting and the owners are out of state.

My mother is not doing well, from one thing to the next medically and with her dementia. She lives with my sibling a state away, but her condition is getting worse it seems so rapidly this last year. I feel like by next year, I just don't know how her condition will be.

End of month update:
We did really well in Jan. We did not eat out, stuck to our grocery budget, I packed tea from home everyday vs Starbucks, and the only thing we spent money on outside of bills was Tax software as I am going to try to do our taxes instead of paying someone $400 to do it. I am excited to really start working on paying off DH's credit card debt now that I know I have a job.

1.) Find a new job - Me and DH is looking for part time job to help out (I accepted an offer for a new role at my current company and DH will most likely be starting a new part time job in March!!)
2.) Pay off DH's credit card: Currently 0% so need to pay off before interest hits- Sent $700 to Credit card that we were holding until job situation figured out.
3.) Increase savings - plan to work on this in Feb
4.) Pay remaining balance for March Disney trip - Have money saved up so will pay by due date in Feb. Now that have job can still go!!
5.) Save money for brother's wedding cruise in Nov.- Cancelled as they are expecting first child - instant savings for us!
6.) Would like to do a small trip to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary but will depend on job - DH and I have decided on a road trip to SD to visit Black Hills/Badlands.

From a personal perspective:
1.) Lose last 13 pounds! Still working on it
2.) Complete first full marathon- plan to complete in Oct.
3.) Learn something new (hobby, skill, take a class) - Doing our taxes and plan to take a photography class

Same. But our landlord is super responsive and immediately called her handyman and gave me his number so I could set up a time for him to come by. I love our landlord!

Hi all! I have been lurking here for awhile but thought I would join in the fun.
:welcome:

...but I could be biased, i'm a giants fan and I love SF.
GO GIANTS!!!! Go Gilroy garlic fries!!! (thank goodness Cueto is back!)

Along the S.F. line (I'm lame and forgot who is going) Please remember our state is VAST. The redwoods are not "nearby," but a jaunt up the freeway. That is, if you're thinking of the Redwood Giants or Forest of Mystery. Yes, there are some redwoods in the South Bay area, but they're not the same as the ones in Humboldt County. I'd also suggest Santa Cruz. I love the Boardwalk and the area. There is an aquarium in S.F., Pier 39 (total tourist trap, and I love it), and the zoo.

Wanted to work on the budget today because it's been put off due to family (and funeral) stuff, but forgot the thumb drive at home. Taxes are done and filed, refund from the Feds, paying the State.

I'm actually putting a WDW trip into the budget for three years from now. And no one can stop me.

UGH!

My car is going to cost almost $2000 today for all the maintenance service and repair it needs to the A/C (basically needs an entire new system). :scared::scared::scared:

So much for my $2000 to savings in March...

This is the part of driving an old car that I don't like. At least the dealer was nice enough to loan me a car so I could come home and not sit there for the next 6 hours.

Just checked Turbo-Tax, and the state form that was due to be ready on 2/7 so I could file? Not going to be ready until 2/14.

So, I just filed federal, and will come back next week and check on state and file it whenever it is ready.

Looking over the synopsis information, claiming the loss from the people not paying rent last year put my adjusted gross income at $8000 for the year.

Don't you live in this house full time? If so, you cannot deduct the loses from rental income from your other income. It would not qualify as a rental property, but as a personal residence. You better hope you aren't audited. You can only do what you did if this was strictly a rental property (i.e. you lived there less than 10% of the days in which you rented it out, or 14 days total, if you never rented it out). Being caught claiming these losses can result in some pretty hefty fines and legal fees, if you need to hire a tax lawyer...

So, I was so proud of myself. One month of way decreased spending down and several more to go. I'm actually excited about having more money that's my own. And then, of course, I drove to work this morning (12 hour overtime shift on my day off) to have a car cross into my lane and hit my new car (with 5,000 miles on it) only to pull pull around me and pass me (it was 0630 and dark and I couldn't see the plate and only knew it was a white compact car). They drove off from the accident so now I get to pay to have the dent taken out of my car and have the paint buffed. Apparently I shouldn't be celebrating yet.

Sorry that happened. It sounds like you are alright though, so glad if that is the case.

I entered everything as honest as possible given the limitations of the responses according to the questions. And you are undoubtedly correct, this is probably in a very grey area. I did rent the extra rooms. I did incur extra expenses associated with that. I did have losses when they didn't pay. It might not be quite as cut and dried as the IRS would like, But it was not filed with an intent to defraud. So, I am still going to burn incense that I don't get audited.

Nothing exciting to report -

Met all my monthly savings goals. 2 months left on my car payment.

No huge debt payment, but everything is in line with where I want it to be given my income.

Annual reviews should be coming up, but I got a promotion in November, so I'm not expecting much of a pay bump, if anything.

After paying to file taxes, I'll be getting about 2.2k back. Splitting this between vacation fund, downpayment fund, and CC debt. Filing tomorrow.

I've been keeping up with my runs. I'm looking forward to a bridal shower for my cousin, Anastacia (musical), my boyfriend's 30th, and my Disney/run Disney trip all within the next two months.

Just trucking right along.

February is not starting well.
I spent $1300 today and will have another $500 next week.
I needed a new business phone so whilst it is fully deductible it was still ouch to cash-flow.

Medical expenses, feel like I am falling apart these days. Up until last year I didn't even have a GP. I would just go to any medical centre when I needed to e.g pap smears so maybe once every 3 years. Then last year I herniated 2 back discs and it has been non-stop every since.
I had another Dr appointment this morning my 3rd this year. My second ear infection this year, probably due to swimming. I have to swim daily due to the back injury. Appointment was $80 and I get approx half back. Script was $25.

Next week is my car service and I need new brakes. Quoted $480 so fingers crossed it doesn't cost more.
