Debt Dumpers - 2016

Hello Mr. Murphy. Flat tire yesterday, unfixable, $350 for new tires.

No luck yet on the job front for DH either. He talked to his union business agent this week. He is #34 on a list of 38 guys out of work from his local.

Yuck! Did you only have to get 1 tire? Hoping things work out for your dh!

Murphy's been busy!! We have a car thing happening too. The passenger side front wheel sounds "wobbly" and the sound is worse the higher the speed so DH thinks it could be a wheel bearing or something even worse. We just had the da*n thing looked looked at in January and they did the bushing arms and some other wheel(ish) related stuff so I am not happy about that. Besides which that wheel bearing has already been replaced once, so...not cool. I'm scared to drive it on the highway. It sounds so menacing. We can't bring it in right away though...hoping it's okay until we can get to the dealership.

Anyway, on a positive note...I just entered all our tax info into the software (didn't file as of yet) and it looks as though we will be getting $2500 back, which is exactly what I expected, so that's good news.

Apparently I am a popular person to leave money to. I got a call this morning from the brother of an old family friend (she and my mom were best friends for decades and I considered her to be an honourary aunt). She passed away Christmas Day 2013 and her husband passed away 10 months later. Seems that she left a small amount of money for me in her will. I am touched, she did NOT need to do that and it was completely unexpected. In light of the money I've already received, I thinking putting this money in our kids education funds would be the right thing to do; we used to talk for hours about literature and she always felt a good education (whereever you got it) gave a good start in life so I think she'd like to see it put towards something like that.

Holy crap! Your getting a windfall of money every day! It's sad that it's coming from people passing away. I think that's smart to put it into the college funds for your kids. Since the other money is able to pay off your debt this is a great idea. You and your dh must be shaking your heads in disbelief! Lol

Speaking of windfalls, my parents asked me to come by today. Their investment advisor was there and they have decided instead of leaving everything in a trust fund, they're going to start support their grandkids now. They just paid off my CC and are paying for my boys' (I have twins) university education and all expenses related to them. I'm in shock. They've always helped out but this is huge. As of today I am officially debt free except for my mortgage. I feel like I have won the lottery.
My parents have always been very supportive. They're very well off but I never expected this.

@Marlyn that's wonderful news!!

@gracie1 my aunts' passing hit myself and my mom very hard, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her. It was so thoughtful of her to include me.

Well, Murphy just paid a visit. DH was on the way home on the interstate and a guy in front of him had a large plastic sign in the back of his truck. It flew out the truck and right into DH's car, cracking the front bumper and scratching the paint all down the passenger side. Guy took off so DH didn't get a license plate. So irritating. Advice on where to start? Our deductible is $500, so I don't know if we'll hit that? I would assume so, it's a 2013 car.
Oh, you will hit $500 all right! Unbelievable how much things cost! Go to a shop on your own and price it before you call the insurance company.

GLAD HE WASN'T HURT and the damage wasn't worse!

How wonderful! And by them doing it now, they can enjoy the difference it makes for you!

You must be a wonderful person! People seem to think highly of you! I think you're nice just from your posts on this board!

And while I'm at it, I feel like so many of you who've been posting for the last six to nine months (that I've been on this thread) are also super! So many positive thoughts and shared empathy. A couple of you are always among THE FIRST to welcome new posters and that is wonderful!

Love you all!

You can call Disney and inquire if you have any offers. Lots of people overlook theirs so make that call!

Thank you! I called but no PIN assigned to me. Crossing fingers for super summer sale!

How wonderful! And by them doing it now, they can enjoy the difference it makes for you!

That's what they said. Why wait for them to be gone for the boys and I to be supported and comfortable. It doesn't affect them financially, but benefits us huge. I'm still feeling so blessed to have such a great family.

I'm agreeing with you on every single thing you said! Everyone on this thread is great. If I remember correctly this is the third year of this thread? And in three years there is nothing negative or thread fighting going on. That's pretty much a miracle!! Lol.

Well, I got the one cc paid off so that's good news! I'm also getting paid a bit more for the article I wrote than I originally thought, so that will all go toward the second cc on my list.

Also, I changed my retirement contributions to zero. I feel like I'm throwing my money away with it at this point since it's lost so much and is continuing to lose money every month. I feel like the funds will be better used in getting my debt down to zero at this point. My employer still contributes so at least there's that. From what I've read, the stock market will continue to suffer this year. Hoping this is a good decision.

Wow, this is incredible!! How wonderful of your parents to do this for you and your twins!

Way to go paying off one of your CC!!

I recently did the same thing. Stopped retirement contributions. It seemed pointless to do it when I had CC debt. Now that my CC debt is paid off, I'm not sure if I should start contributing again, or maybe put extra money on my mortgage if I can. I feel like the economy is on a downward spiral. Might be a good idea to sit down with an investment advisor.
It's really hard to know what to do...

Checked my bank online, and my state refund is listing as a pending deposit. Woo-Hoo!! It should be reconciled into Monday night when they reconcile the accounts.

So, in anticipation, I went online and scheduled to pay off my next account (CareCredit). It won't actually pay off until 3/1 on the payment due date, but the payment is already deducted out of my checkbook in Quicken.

I also scheduled a payment for 3/9 using most of my federal refund to make a big payment on my next account. It will pay off about half of that one, which means that when I move my snowball to it in April, I can pay it off just using my snowball in 3 more payments.

I also scheduled my next couple of payments to my gas credit card, boosting them by $150 over the normal weekly payment. This will pay down that card - which is the one that I will have to use on my Spring Break trip. I pay this card each week after I get paid from my 2nd job, so I went ahead and scheduled the 2/22 payment from my check this past Friday, and the 2/29 payment based on what I should get for having worked yesterday. Total, I will boost the payment to this CC by $150 a week for 6 total payments. That should keep me ahead of what I will wind up charging for gas and on my trip, but probably won't decrease the overall total on it by much.

And all of that takes care of my refund for this year.

Congratulations!!! Don't you love getting rid of a debt? I know I do. And way to go getting extra on the payment!!

It never hurts to talk to an adviser. I still have a bit under 20 years til retirement, so in my thought now is a good time to invest. Prices are down, and may go lower, but as long as I'm investing in solid stocks & bonds & funds, they will eventually bounce back and will be worth a lot more, and I'll have more of them. I managed to do the same thing about 8 years ago when the economy crashed. Bought a whole bunch of Ford stock for under $10 each, when I finally sold them in 2013, they were in the $50-$60 range. I think I had managed to average 350% return on the stuff I bought.
