Debt Dumpers - 2013

I'm off work sick today and playing catch up.

Special Hugs to everyone dealing with job lay offs and cutbacks.

I had a battle with myself last week,I got an extra pay
cheque and was trying to schedule an extra Disney trip for this Christmas.
I talked myself in and out of going 100 times-I even thought about sleeping in a tent at Disney(resort girl here):rotfl2:,,,my sons thought this was extremely funny, mom just doesn't do camping in a tent.
Everything I priced out was coming in around 1400.00.-5 days.
And I already have a March Break trip booked and paid sooooooooo....

I paid down some extra money on upcoming bills!:banana:

This will make the Christmas break much easier financially and less stressful.

This being a financially responsible person is tough.
Hugs Mel

Great job on the tough decision! Being financially responsible sucks sometimes. lol hugs. :)

My husband didn't get a job he was going for (he was second in line if the first person turned it down). Boo! He works full time already, but this would have been a job with potential to move up in the company which is not an option where he currently works. I'm in the middle of the interview process for a position at the company where I'm currently working as a part time contractor. I absolutely don't want the job for any other reason than money. It's not the greatest situation to be in...I'd rather be doing something that interests me, and having just got my Masters degree in Library Science it's a bit of a blow not being able to find work in that field. But I suppose I should be happy something stable and well-paying is pretty much falling into my lap right now. It's not a sure thing, but since I already work in the department I think I'm a front runner over people who would have to start from square one. Fingers crossed!

I'm sorry about your husband not getting the job he wanted, but at least he does have a job now. As for your job, you really need to do what is best for you. Who knows....you may end up liking your job and your coworkers. :)

My husband and I downloaded our free trial of YNAB last night; I've been doing most of the banking for several years now so I guess it should have come as no surprise how 'in the dark' dh really was about day to day finances. Honestly though, some of his questions/reactions did surprise me. We REALLY needed to do something like this LOL so here's hoping we are finally on the road to getting our debt paid off!

Great job! Having things down on paper can really put things into perspective.

I have an MLS too and used to be a librarian, now I am a medical researcher/writer. So two things: one is the degree can open all kinds of doors even if you don't get a library job. I know you want one though, and I totally get that. When I had first graduated from library school, it took me a full year to get that first professional job. Luckily, I was a paraprofessional in a library so I kept working in the field. Keep applying and interviewing...good luck!

Lol. Your not alone with in the dark mate. Give him flash light. Good luck

Sorry to hear about your husband's job -- but good luck with yours! I hope you get the promotion and it turns out to be better than you ever imagined pixiedust:

Congrats and good luck! It was a real eye-opener for me too. I knew my DH wasn't hands on about our money but I didn't realize how out of touch he was until we had it all laid out in front of us. then I realized I was kind of out of touch myself! Good luck moving forward :cheer2:

Thanks! The thing is, I don't want to work as a public librarian, I'd really like to be in Special Collections or an archive. So that really limits the opportunities that are available. I'm hoping that eventually I'll be able to find something that I'll really love doing, but for now I'm just proud of myself for finishing the program and getting the degree. The reason I started down that path was because I was laid off from my job as a corporate photographer after 8 years, and I couldn't find any work anywhere so I decided I needed to switch gears. Since then I've had pretty steady part time or full time contract work that paid a lot more than what I would make working my way up at a library, so I really had no choice but to take those jobs over gaining experience in the field I was studying for. It's really been a catch-22.

Yeah, usually for those specialized jobs you need experience, more certifications or an in somewhere. I was a reference librarian. I preferred (most days) working with people to just cataloging or something. And you're right about the pay. Librarians are certainly not in it for the money!

It sure is!! ::yes::
It took a lot of strength for me to resist booking when DCL came out with great rates over our kids school break in Nov.
I couldn't get the time off from work so that helped squash any ideas.

I'm really motivated and paying down bills as much as possible. Today I paid off dh's Kohls charge & our Amazon card. Both were 0% interest but it's nice to see them GONE! Time to double that snowball baby!! :cool1:

Good luck to all of you paying down bills & job hunting! :goodvibes pixiedust:

Yea! Two cards paid off. woot woot!!:cool1::cool1:

I just want to say snowballing does work.
I had over 7 credit cards with the smallest being JCPenney at $440.
My largest was $7,000.

It took me 5.5 years to pay them all off and I finally did it.
I was going to reward my myself and go to Disney in November,
but I got called to Jury Duty in November.
"What is the saying? "Plan and God laughs?"

I do have a mortgage payment yet and we are making triple payments and I just started a vacation fund along with a retirement fund & cushion fund. It is nice to see our mortgage go down by a thousand each month instead of a few hundred dollars.

Off topic but I had jury duty last year during my disney trip. I just told them I was going on vacation and they wrote down the dates that I would be gone and said no problem as long as I showed up to the rest of the dates.

I didn't even realize I wasn't getting my board updates emailed to me. When I came to the board I was logged off (usually I stay signed into all my chat boards). Wonder if that's why? Do you stop getting updates if you sign out? I'd better resubscribe, just in case :)

Bad news on our front - JUST as we decided on a roof/ gutter color -- hubby got into a car accident :( Last Friday. On his birthday. Double :( :( Car is totaled. This is his third accident in 3 years, none his fault. The guy that hit him is 92 years old! And a priest. Geez, my grandma is 94 & I can't even IMAGINE her trying to drive!

And we still have to get the roof. It's past time, & we already put down a deposit. Double whammy!

Over the years I've had a few accidents that were not my fault. (Rear ended 4x!! side swiped, impatient left-turners coming at me.) By the last time I simply called THEIR insurance company instead of mine and arranged for them to pay for repairs & rental car. My insurance never went up. What sucks is when they total it and the book value they give you isn't worth enough to cover the purchase of another similar car (or new car). Mine were never totaled but sometimes I wish they did. The repairs were never quite right with interior lights not working intermittently. One time the paint job was so awful & didn't match the rest of the car. It's all such a headache dealing with insurance companies, rental cars, etc.
I feel for you.
Maybe you can do the gutters later? We got a new roof in Aug and had them put the old gutters back up. I would have liked getting new ones but just couldn't put the $ out then. Maybe with our tax refund we can do it in the spring. Ugh, with a house it just never ends. Our happy little money pit. :goodvibes

Are you able to reschedule?
Dh was called for jury duty on the same day I was scheduled for sinus surgery and another time coincided with a vacation. These are not grounds for excusal but they will allow us to reschedule and they reassign us to a new date.
After 5.5 years you really deserve a trip to Disney. I just went through the whole snowball scenario, each paycheck & extra payment and it will take us until March of 2015 to get rid of all of it except dh's truck payment. (Just in time for ds16 to graduate HS & start college.) That's if we really keep our nose to the grindstone so to speak and not take any trips at all. Really unlikely but at least it gives me a goal to shoot for. By Feb I'll be dying to go someplace warm.

Yes! If you are ever in an accident that is not your fault and the other driver is not contesting, try to work with there insurance company first. Only involve your insurance company if it is absolutely necessary.

Atleast till the next cavity :lmao: I plan on sitting down this week and redoing the budget, for the millionth time! Just to see where I will stand at the end of the year with my savings.
