We're thinking of getting a debit card. (I know, we're behind the times!) But I've been so nervous about them.
But now, a lot of the places we write checks at, like WalMart, gas stations, grocery stores, etc., just take your personal check, run it through a machine and give it back to you. Seems like such a waste to me, as far as buying boxes of checks.
Can you guys give me some more advice? Should we just get one and be done with it? We'd only use it at the grocery store, gas station, WalMart, places like that.
What are the good things about debit cards and the bad things? I've heard you can check out and just use the debit card but say credit and then you won't have to put in a pin number. (The whole pin number thing is what scares me.) Thanks for any advice!

How did they get the number if they didn't have the card? Would a debit card still be safer than a check?
I would think so, since on a check your account number is right on it.
Thanks for all the advice. We will probably get one eventually!
to all of the above, but especially the bolded.
