If you use a debit card, especially at restaurants, be sure to check your account often.
I look over my checking account online every few days and recently found an unauthorized charge to "Boost Mobile". I called the bank and was given the 800 # for Boost, which is located in Calilfornia, and they told me that someone had ordered $50 in extra minutes with my card. They are supposed to refund my money and give me information on the transaction to pass along to the police here; it's been almost 2 weeks and I've heard nothing though it took them less than 24 hours to allow a criminal to use my account and withdraw the money. I called Boost again tonight and was told "yeah, we could all use an extra $50" to which I replied that it was MY $50, not an extra $50. I know it could have been a lot worse, but $50 is a lot of money to me. I've cancelled my debit card and have been advised by the police to check my credit report every 3 months to see if anything else happens.
I've also placed a "credit fraud alert" on my records at the 3 major credit reporting companies. This is a free service that requires any bank or other company opening an account in my name to call my HOME # and verify the identity of the person opening the account. Please protect yourselves and take advantage of this service.
