Debit card at check in

We're getting a 2-bedroom villa @ SSR. There will be 7 adults, 1 child, 1 infant. We no longer have credit cards and to keep things simple, we're telling the front desk to not allow charging privledges to KTTW cards.

I assume you still have to use a card at check-in?? Can we use a debit card? And what amount do they get pre-authorized?

With 4 families in the room, is it possible for the other 3 families to have their KTTW cards linked to their own credit cards? (3 different cards)

We're doing the DDP so there's very little OOP. I've been stashing away Disney gift cards for months for tips, etc.

TIA for your help!

If you are staying on DVC points you do not have to leave a credit card on file. You are allowed to do so. It is very unlikely they will be willing to put 3 seperate cards on the different room keys- they need to make up a conference style reservation in order to do more than 1 and I don't even know if they can do it with the systems at SSR. The best bet with that many in the room is jsut to carry charge cards along with the room keys.

You don't have to use a card at check in but if you wanted to, you could use your debit card.

we are the same way...no credit cards!!!! we did have a problem at check in lkast year at boardwalk using our debit card. we wanted to pay for our park tix and dining plan...it was on a sunday so that made it worse...but thats another story. anyway, we called our bank on monday and were told they have a limit on them per day..i believe every bank is different. we were told by our bank if you let them know before you travel they can raise the limit so we wouldnt have this problem in the future...best thing is to check with your bank.

I highly advise against doing this. Do not leave your debit card on file.

If you want to avoid using credit cards, simply decline to leave a card on file. For purchases and meals, use cash or get yourself some prepaid visa or amex cards or use gift cards. I would not give your debit card at the restaurant either.

Why not? Fear of fraud?

I would never use my debit card to travel. If there is a problem you are going to be out that money from your checking account immediately while you wait for resolution.

That's my view too...

I am not willing to give those folks access to my cash!

than does a credit card. You can still use a cc and then pay off the balance. Twice I've had issues with a cc and fraud that were caught by the cc company and cost me $0 out of pocket. One of those times was at the world.

We never leave ANY card at the front desk. No need to. We just use our secured card to make purchases, and we can track them online and even from our cell phones. My card gives me an alert on my cell every time there is a purchase over $50.

Same.

Sorry to be dense, but what is a secured card? I'm interested in this because we only use debit cards, no CC. We are renting points from a friend and are on the dining pan, and while I do not plan on charging too much to the room, I will need to pay for internet usage or maybe an extra towel package. Can I just put cash down at the front desk at check-in? Thanks!

Thanks everyone! We are using points so it sounds like we won't need to leave a card on file. Besides, I don't like the thought of my debit card being linked to ANYTHING! I have Disney GC's but will get a couple prepaid cc's as well, thanks again.

Absolutely you can pay either with cash or your debit or credit card when you check out if you are charged for internet. I would prefer to do that over having Disney put the $1500 hold on the card.

FYI, our Debit card is what we have that $50 call security on.

Thanks so much. You have been so helpful in so much of my planning, especially on some of the OKW threads. :)

Disney doesn't put holds on cards, which is part of the reason we hear of of those random problems with renters with unpaid balances at check out.

Debit cards carry more risk then credit cards, I understand people's caution of credit cards, but the risk isn't in the card, it's in the use of the card by the card holder. Debit cards risks are far greater and legally have significantly less protections then credit cards.

Maybe it's not officially called a "hold", but they do charge the $1500 to make sure there is room on the card, and then credit it back at the end of the trip. At least that's the way they used to do it years ago when we were leaving a credit card. It's been years since we have done that.

They ABSOLUTELY do not do any sort of hold, they may validate the card is valid but there are zero restrictions to the account credit lines/balances when you provide your card.

Yes. That is one concern, a big one. The other is simple errors, authorization holds, etc. Any one of these can tie up real money in your bank account and it is much more difficult to get back vs. a simple chargeback to your credit card. The legal protections for credit card users are much greater than for debit card transactions. Debit cards have their place, but I don't use them for Point of Sale or Internet Transactions.

I once had a bunch of checks bounce because a hotel placed two huge authorizations on my debit card (we used it to check in). They took over a week to "release". Lesson Learned.

Sorry. I agree about using a CC for holds on rooms, car rentals, etc. I was just questioning not using them in restaurants. I gave a Visa debit card and - for more than a decade - I have been using it in restaurants.
