We just got back from a wonderful vacation at WDW only to discover that our debit card and some cash was taken from a drawer in our room. I know it was our fault but has this ever happened to anyone else?

There were nine unauthorized transactions placed on the card but fortunately the card company caught the suspicious use right away.

Welcome to the Disboards! :cool1:

I'm sorry to hear about what happened. I have never had any problems and I leave cash and cards in drawers in the room all the time. I will be more careful on my next trip.

:confused3 Interesting first post

Each hotel has a safe, why would anyone leave cash and a debit card in a drawer?

There is a Disney "Tinker Bell" theory. Would you leave cash in a hotel room in New York City? Then why Disney? One thing that worries me is when I read on these boards that folks are taking cash to Disney! You should never travel with more cash then you can afford to lose.

I took a group of kids to Europe this summer. Day 1 one of the other chaperones lost both the credit card and $7000 in traveler's checks. Thank goodness it was traveler's checks... what if it had been cash?

There's been talk on this board about things taken from the safe! So even that isn't all that "safe". It's been advised that people leave valuables at the front desk safe.

No one can really get in the rooms except employees of the resort- right?
:confused3

NO, never happend to us. I have always kept wallet and purse in safe, but have left small bills leftover from the day and change everywhere and it was always there when we came back. I never take jewlery or anything else of great value.

Sorry this happend.

Oh, once I was at a pin cart in the lobby of the Poly, had a 20.00 bill in hand and my room charge print out, turned to help my daughter with a pin on her lanyard, like an idiot, laid my money and print out on the cart, turned back and it was gone, the print out was still there, 20.00 gone, had to take the pin off of her lanyard because that was the money to pay for it. :sad2: I looked like a crazy person looking all around for it. The lady at the cart must have thought I had lost my mind too.

Knock on wood, nothing has ever been taken from our rooms. I also leave change, cameras, dvd recorder and laptop out and nothing has ever gone missing. And definitely nothing has ever been taken out of the safe.

I guess I must be overly cautious as I have never left cash/cards in any hotel room. We also lock our valuables (camera, etc) inside our suitcases if we leave them in the room. I know it's not a fool-safe method, but at least it makes it harder to steal anything. Sorry this happened to you. :(

Sorry this has happened. I always leave money in the safe but have left small amounts of money and valuables in the room. So far I have yet to have any trouble. I would still call the resort and let them know. You never know if they may have had other complaints as well.

There have many posts about the Front Dest CM's at several resorts giving room keys to people that are a mistake, the room is already occupied by someone else. So, no, it isn't just employees of the resort that can get in your room. Even so, if they are cleaning and not paying attention, someone can sneak in. That happened to us in San Diego, they stole my son's wallet, I think, while someone was cleaning the room. Or else the maid did, but she denied it. That is one reason why I like the DVC, no one comes into your room every day to clean.

I did indicate in my post that it was our fault. I should have had the card and the cash with me. It is just upsetting to know that someone was going through our things while we were enjoying our day at MK.

Sorry this happened to you! Last trip to Disney we realized that my hubby had forgot to shut and lock the safe before we left the room. It had my hubby's expensive watch and several hundred dollars in cash. Although, we usually take travelers checks when we travel overseas, we take some cash and credit cards to Disney. Long story short, it was all there when we got back! We were relieved. Unfortunatley, there are some dishonest people anywhere you go and that includes Disney!

So sorry about your missing money and ATM. That must have been a bummer.

I had the exact opposite thing happen to us. I left $5 out for the mousekeepers in ASMo and when we got back that day it was still there! The next day I left it on the stripped bed and it was gone. We left our video camera in the room a couple of days as well as our kids Leapsters and a portable DVD player. They were inside a bag but if there was snooping going on they were readily available.

Housekeepers in general are very honest. If they get more than one complaint about missing items from a room they have cleaned, they will lose their job (at least that's the way it was when I worked in a chain hotel 15 years ago). Your stuff usually isn't worth it.

Sorry this happened to you.

We've been fortunate that it has not happened to us with any of our personal items. We never leave cash/cards in the room.

To use your Debit card, didn't they also have to have your pin #?

It was a debit/credit card. I never use it as a credit card and you don't need a pin for that. They were able to charge $385 on it. Hopefully, we won't have to pay for that.

Thanks for all the concern.

I'm the paranoid type - I try not to travel with too much cash, and I never leave money or credit cards anywhere but the room safe. Yes, I know the safe is not Fort Knox, but it is far superior to leaving money and credit cards in an unlockable drawer, and it is far more convenient than the front desk.

I also lock up my laptop whenever I leave the room.

I don't know if I have been lucky or if my precautions have paid off (maybe both) but I have never had anything go missing from a hotel room.

Carol, thanks for mentioning the tinkerbell theory. :) Bad things can still happen at WDW or anywhere else.

Sorry that that happened to you, it is unfortunate that it happens. I am sure you are beating yourself up so I won't. I just look at I guess it could have been worse. Hope you still had a good time.

We stayed at the ASM and nothing taken but I will tell you, my son-in-law layed down his oakley sunglasses when he was opening a coke, just that fast ( with five of us there) they were gone 200.00 blown to the wind , needless to say that was upsetting for all of us, he had just bought them and was bragging on the warranty the night before. Also at earl of sandwich we sat a bag down by my dd ( who"s in a wheelchair ), went to get drinks came back bag was gone 52.00 of stuff. After that everything we bought was watched like it belonged to the president of the united states. Nothing taken after that. :teeth:
