I've thought for a long time that Karl Rove's focus on the "base" would end up being a mistake. There are some significant generational shifts occurring now, and this year's first time eligible voters are informed and interested in the political process. In general, the things Rove has done to excite the base (like the FMA) seem mean-spirited and wrong to this group of voters.
