Dear Caitlin,

Thanks. NGL, I don't get the whole "underage drinking is bad thing". I don't understand the magic number of 21. Why is under 21 considered illegal and harmful, and over 21 is legal and not harmful. Does something massively change to our bodies once we turn 21? I've never read anything from the Mayo Clinic about it, and unless it comes from the Mayo Clinic I don't believe it. Life is too short to worry about what its going to do to my head, or my legs, or , ahem, my stomach. (lite beer only, please) ;) I don't even know if I'm gonna live to see tomorrow. 1 drink is not going to kill me, unless I have an issue with breathing and swallowing.

Then again, I'm also a free supporter or marijuana, which I don't do by the way. :hippie: And abortion. And gay rights. Wooo aren't I a rebel. ;) :hippie::hippie::hippie::hippie::hippie:

Wavin my freak flag,
meeeeeeee (:

Dear Sonya,

Your phrasing makes it seem like you can't be against underage drinking and in support of those other things... I think underage drinking is stupid, but I think marijuana should be legal with a designated age. I'm all for abortion and gay rights too.

Dear Sonya,

Underage drinking is not wrong IMO, but ONLY if it's only one or two every now and then. People who go our every weekend and get wasted are annoying and they don't look mature like they're trying too.

I have drank, but I'm smart about it. Anyone who drinks and drives should I have that license taken away forever.

I think the whole 21 limit has to do with maturity. Would you say a 13 year old would make the same decision a 25 year old would? Then again, some 25 year old's have the brain of a 13 year old. xD

And the abortion thing, I am pro-choice. BUT I believe that you should only have an abortion when they baby or your life is in danger. Or if you get raped. Teenage girls or early 20's girls that go out every weekend and sleep with whoever and go get abortions everytime they get pregnant... that's when I don't agree with it.

Just my two cents (:

-Kelsi.

Dear anyone,

whats the point of getting DRUNK or getting HIGH?

I mean.. I know people say you might not wake up tomorrow so you gotta live it up.. but no, I'd rather spend my last day with my family, I'd rather enjoy my last day.

I don't wanna look back on my childhood and not even remember parts of it..

I wanna look back and think "I made that right choice, I made the choice that I hope and pray my kids will make"

Nope, I get criticized a lot for it. I've been yelled at before for saying I supported underage drinking, marijuana, abortion, and gay rights. A lot of people I've met - if they don't support the one, they don't support the other. Christian beliefs, family values, etc all come into play.

Honey, that's called old age. It's gonna happen whether you're drunk or not. ;) Like I said before, I don't understand the age set for legal drinking. I've never been aware of anything spectacular that happens to us at 21, be it physical, mental, emotional, etc.

sonya,

the reason the drinking age is at 21 is because there is this part of your brain that doesn't finish developing until "21" (actually its more like 24 for most people, but whatever) and that part of your brain is the part that lets someone realize the consequences of their actions. this explains the "bullet proof" feeling that many teenagers have. once this brain chemistry is finalized around age 21-24, people (in theory) are less impulsive about choices, and can foresee consequences that their younger counterpart was never worried about.

-shelby.

oh, and i think underage drinking/drug use is a pretty bad idea, but i support gay rights and abortion. :confused3

oh, and actually, unless people have a brain injury or disease like dementia, they actually don't forget their youth. the long term memory has an endless capacity, and for most people, memories will never be lost.

dear those discussing,

I just really hate people bragging over how wasted/high they were.
it really bothers me.

There's this one girl I am always stuck discussing with in Grief and Loss and it's ALL SHE TALKS ABOUT.

We were talking about what brings sorrow into our lives and here are a few of her responses:
"When all your weed is gone"
"When your alcohol is all watered down"
"When you haven't had sex in a really long time"

thanks, I really wanted to know how deep you are.

The old age thing was a joke, haha. OT, but I hate dementia. My yaya had dementia and alzheimer's, but I didn't really see it because she lived in Spain. The last time I saw her was when she visited in 2003. But now when I work on the dementia floor on clinicals, it's really upsetting to see the rapid decrease in a patient's form. My one patient had been upbeat, albeit non-verbal one week. The next week, she was non-responsive all around. It was really quite upsetting. :guilty:

Anyway, again, I just think the drinking age is stupid. If a brain can't properly form until 24 or so (going to be safe and say 24 because I don't want to underestimate with 21), all "major" decisions should be kept until 24 don'tcha think? but then that takes away all freedom and what not. It's just screwy. I just think that, for most people, not all, if they're going to drink, they're going to drink before they're 21. People are going to do what they want to do. But thanks for telling about that, that was something I didn't know.

I just think that if I'm old enough to enter the military, file taxes, get married, go to college, hold a successful job, own a home, etc. and make all those major decisions, I should be able to make the decision to have a glass of wine or a bottle of beer. Is it a poor decision? Maybe, because like you said the brain isn't fully developed. It's more of a governmental think and not a moral thing, yanno?

me.

i definitely think that its not congruent with the other age limitations, but (playing devils advocate) i do think that is because getting a job, driving a car, graduating, owning a home, etc are more necessary to your life than drinking. the fact of the matter is that people don't HAVE to drink. we typically have to do those other things. and perhaps its imposed at that level to give us "practice" to do those things without the influence of alcohol (in a perfect world) before we have the option to have alcohol. does that make sense?

i do agree that the governmentild can be taken away. now people will argue with me is imposing morals on people, as with the sex and drug laws. thats not necessarily a bad thing, though. there are two sides to every arguement, and one of the sides of alcohol laws is that it is set out to protect people who cannot make these decisions for themselves, like small children from abuse. if someone abuses their children with alcohol, or under the influence, they can have their children taken away. if you drive with children, under the influence, they can be taken away. and i can't imagine how that could be a bad thing.

Yeah I totally understand. We don't have to drink, but if the options for all the previous are mentioned, the options for drugs (legal like marijuana, if it were legalized, NOTTTTT the hard stuff) and alcohol should also be there.

Wouldn't the later depend on the CPS branch though? I mean I know it's what should happen, but there are always discrepancies with what should happen and what ends up happening. I've heard of CPS dropping the ball a few times, but I don't really kinow the whole story for those things.

Dear School District,
Umm yeah now I love you for making it a snow day tomorrow! :D
