we sold our home (closed in may) and i kind of wondered about the buyers-when they submitted their bid they put in personal info about their jobs and where they worked (i'm guessing they thought maybe it realy mattered to us? not!-if they had the $$$ we did'nt need to know anything else) and i told dh they must be doing some type of flaky financing otherwise their monthly payments were going to be over 80% of their take home pay. not to mention that one of the reasons they 'loved' our home was because it had enough of a lot to build a massive concrete slab on to store all their 'toys' (multiple boats, rv's, motor cycles, atvs....) which even if paid off do cost to keep maintained and registered.
anyway-their financing went through so i figure if they want to be 'home poor' and risk losing the place if funds get short it's between them and the lender.
flash forward not 2 months later and i get a phone call from someone who insists i owe them money and they are putting a lein on my home. i tell them i don't own a home nor do i know them. come to find out it's someone the buyers contracted with and stiffed on the bill. the contractor had pulled the assessor's info. up from a non-updated data base and thought he was talking to them not me when he called. got that straightened out.
yesterday i get a bill from the garbage company saying that my garbage bill has'nt been paid in over 4 months and there will be a lien placed on my home. i look at the service address and YUP it's the old house. i call the garbage company and they research and say 'you're right-you paid off the account when you moved and then set up service at the rental you're in'-again they are using a database for the assessors that does not update often (assessors office sez they run into the problem all the time with companies that use bundled services software that does'nt hook up to the actual current public records).
guess i'll keep the home sales paperwork handy for the foreseeable future, never know when i might have to fax a copy to someone else who is chasing them down
i'm just glad when we closed out service to all the utilties we made a point of telling them the date the house closed escrow so we have'nt encountered a problem with anyone turning off our services at our new location
