Dead Mouse stuck in my car by the filter

No, it's not Mickey, but I am at WDW right now and the car care center isn't sure it can help me? I'm taking it in for them to look at first thing tomorrow morning (with windows down because it stinks to high heaven) but if they can't get it out, does anyone know a good mechanic in the area you would recommend? It's so nasty! We drove down from MA without any issues, no odor, etc, stayed a night with my mom, and the next morning phew! I can see the bottom half of the mouse when I remove the air filter (which is also disgusting but did the job up until yesterday, I guess) but I can't reach it myself to pull it out. I'm afraid only the bottom half will come out if I tug on it (more ewww!)

Not how I want to spend the morning, but I cannot drive home all the way to MA with the windows down and the stench of dead mouse.

Can you soak it in vodka? Use a Spray bottle. Alcohol fixes tissues so they won’t rot. Don’t ask me how I know.

If it’s any consolation, after a few days they stop smelling. The bad news…. it is usually rats that smell not mice.

Is it a Toyota? I have had the same problem but found nests, not mice. If your car has been sitting for awhile it is more likely for this to happen, although it could just be that the mouse got in there, you started the fan and killed it, and thus your problem now. They like chewing on the soy based covering on the electrical wires and chew on the insulation as well, using it to create nests in accessible areas, often near the air filter. It's ok (not really...) until you turn on the a/c. In this heat the mouse probably died and started decaying pretty quickly.

I would put on a glove and remove the air filter and mouse to stop the smell. I would also use a bleach wipe to wipe out any accessible area. The car place can probably check and see if the rest of it is clear. You will need a new air filter. You can also google 'remove mouse from car air filter' for Youtube videos (just for reference I don't think you will be taking apart your car).

It's a Honda CRV. It's definitely a mouse, as I can see half of a decomposing body dangling down into the filter area. I'm afraid to pull it out myself because I may only get part of it (ew!) and then what? I do have wipes and a can of Lysol to clean the area out, but it's also a very narrow slot to work in, behind the glove compartment.

What? We had a mouse stuck in our heat vent at home and had to go unassemble the ducts and get it out because it smelled so bad.

I know the area you are talking about. I guess I would still gently try to pull it out. Once it's out, I think the smell will go away. You can still have someone look at it if some doesn't come out. Also check the paper filter. If it smells or is damaged, remove it and go to any auto parts store (or Amazon) and get a new one, they are easy to replace yourself. If it is undamaged and doesn't smell I would leave it until it's convenient to replace.

Hopefully the mouse will come out easily. If they have to dismantle your air filter, etc, it could be expensive, so I would try on my own first. Be confident!

When I had this problem with an outside car (after removing nesting materials) I used a Victor Electronic Mouse trap and caught a mouse two days in a row. (if you have one mouse in the area there are probably more) Then the problem stopped. I put the trap in the engine compartment and closed the hood. Caught within hours. ps I did, it not my husband. ha!

I have nothing to offer either (sounds like you’ve got enough info bow), but sorry you’re having to deal with grossness while it’s scorching hot and you’re trying to enjoy your vacation!! Good news is it’ll probably only get better from here! Good luck!

No help here either but sorry you're dealing with this. We've had many mice die in our Toyotas in MA. Dealership is great in dealing with it. DH set a trap in the car and caught one the day we were heading to the airport last summer. Switched the air filter to recirc so they can't get in. But... apparently another one was already in the car. After 2 summer weeks at Disney got back to the car at the airport to discover a dead mouse in the driver's seat. Gross. Lol, wore our face masks all the way home with windows open.

A long thin ended pair of tongs (possibly available at a large off site supermarket or at a Wal Mart) could help.

This🔝

Years ago, I had a mouse stuck in my stovetop, and my roommate used chopsticks to remove it. The poor mouse must have been trying to keep warm and was surprised when I turned on the burner. The mouse got halfway to freedom but its bottom end got stuck and singed. I still think about that poor mouse.
