Dead Man's Chest Not for Little Ones

I am very much in the camp that this movie is not for kids under 13 and I can't imagine bring one to it. I personally always very bothered by seeing young children in movies theaters that are not for them.

I know a lot of people are brining there young kids to movies such as this and that really concerns me. I just don't think that kind of violence and gore is good for any young mind, boy or girl. I belive it does negatively effect them later in life.

DD (5 years old) knows the movie is not for kids (I don't really have to worry about her wanting to see it or even keeping her eyes open if someone brought her, she would of been out of there so fast.) She says the ride at WDW is for kids and just looks at the marketing for it that way. That is what I say too. Many young boys do really get into the prate thing, so I just look at that way. I wish they were not marketing such a movie for kids though.

My 15 year old niece thought it was rather intense, but liked it (and loved Orlando and Johnny.) I think my 10 year old nephew would of been freaked. My guess is when it comes to DVD he will see it, but run to use the bathroom a number of times. I won't let him see it, but his dad most likely will.

I tend to see things through the eyes of my children now and notice many things that are inappropriate that I wouldn't think was before having kids.

We debated on taking DD, almost 4. She watched the firts one and thought the skeleton pirates were cool.

I found out a couple of the scarier parts ahead of time. That being said, DD loved the movie. I did not let her watch the flogging and she hid behind the seat for a bit when Davey Jones first came on the scene. We saw it at the drive-in.

DD wants to see it again, and she is running around the house being a pirate.

Just took all my girls to see it, my youngest is almost 5. She was not scared at all. The monsters are just strange looking, not really scary. They were more funny than scary. But I think it would depend on the child. I know kids who have nightmares from watching Scooby Doo. You know your child best, only you would know if he/she would be scared from that kind of stuff.

My dd9 saw it and didn't mention the gross parts.....The beginning eye ball thing did give me the willies though
::yes:: gotta a agree with that one
My DD10 just clsed her eyes and snuggled closer at the scary parts but other than that it was fine. It depends on the kid.

Over the last fews years I have seen many posts from people complaining about PG13 movies being marketed to young kids. In many of those cases the movie wasn't even being DIRECTLY marketed to young kids, just trailers during G or PG movies or commericials on Nick.

But here we have a totally DIRECT marketing boom in POTC and I'm not seeing a lot of complaining. I've seen cereal, Happy Meals, and toddler toys complete with swords and guns.

Is it only bad when it isn't Disney?

Well, as you may have noticed, some people ARE complaining about it being marketed at kids. Just because it's Disney doesn't mean it's exempt.

Funny...I don't recall POTC: COBP being marketed at kids this way. Why are they doing DMC this way?

There was a girl with her parents in front of us that was around 11 or 12 that ended up leaving because she was so scared. I had a six year old boy on my right who thought everything was "way cool". I'm sure it depends on the kid, but there were some scary scenes in there.

EXACTLY the same during our visit to see this. DS, almost 7... LOVED it. I did close his eyes during the eyeball poke out scene (due to the heads up on here) and I wasn't sure if the end with Captain Jack would show him getting eaten... so I closed his eyes then too.

The rest was creatures that were strange, but no more so than most of the movies! I truly think it depends on the child. The ratings are warnings and I considered myself warned.

For a little guy that doesn't sit all the way through even the calmest of movies (Cars, Wallace and Gromit for example) he was mesmerized and never once asked to leave.... that, speaks volumes to me! pirate:

Some, but even on this thread you have people OK with it. It's at least 3 to 1 in favor of POTC for young kids.

The first one was considered quite the gamble and didn't have a lot of merchandising contracts lined up ahead of time. A lot like the first Toy Story in that way.

One reason: $$$$$$$. They didn't know with the first one what a goldmine they had, and this time around, they do.

The screening I attended had several screaming, crying kids... especially when we saw full frontal Kraken. Some of you prepare to getyour toes stepped on, but I was amazed parents would put their young kids thru that. There will be a price to pay down the road -if not now.

:rotfl: "full frontal Kraken" :rotfl2:

Actually, I agree with your judgement. I would have never let my kids see this movie when they were younger. In fact,we will not be taking DS11 because he has trouble differentiating truth from fiction, and frankly I don't want to be up all night with the lights on.

Now whether this one movie would cause them to become inurred to violence--I think, not so much :confused3 POTC is clearly a fantasy. We've all grown up with the stories of Blackbeard and yet none of us would really like to be like him(or anywhere near him :scared1: ) As parents we are experts on our children, so we must exercise that privilege to protect them if we think a movie is too disturbing for them. But what is too graphic for one family may not be so bad for another.

The only part that disturbed my DD13 was when jack was nibbling on the foot--she was just disgusted :crazy2:

It's PG-13. What on earth would make a parent think it was suitable for younger kids is beyond me.

That said, it's not my NOR ANYONE ELSE'S to determine what movie's a child sees, as long as it's not porn.

But I would be very cautious taking my son if he was younger. Heck, he was scared out of his wits by the barely PG-rated "Ernest Scared Stupid" when he was about six.

Full Frontal Kraken? What, is there squid porn in this movie or something? :confused3 :rotfl2:

Because it's DISNEY.

I think that while a good number of parents review some movies before deciding if their children should see it, the vast majority assume that if it's a DISNEY movie, it must be okay.

I think Disney has (in recent years) sort of "shifted" their focus. They realize that there is a whole other market out there (adults) who will pay $$$$$ to see these kinds of fantasy movies (think Lord of the Rings, etc.).

Disney will always have the "family friendly" status, because, for the most part, they are. But there are other markets out there that Disney is trying to get, and keep.

:tiptoe: Scooting over to the Bad Parent category... I took my DS (6) to see POC! :ssst:

I guess I should get ready now for the evil things he's going to do in the years to come...

Perhaps I should go fix my previous post to hide the fact that I'm such a bad parent.... We need a smilie for Bad Parents... it would fit perfect here.... :lmao:

Please, don't take me wrong... I think everyone needs to judge this on what their child can handle... I can tell you we have left other movies that were rated PG 13 that had too much violence. This, IMHO is no different than the early Star Wars movies... just better special effects!

I don't think this movie will cause my DS to become evil. I also know that he KNOWS the difference between reality and fantasy.

It's truly up to each parent and your opinion should be based on your child, not mine. Ok.... how long before this gets shut down.... 5....4....3...2...1

Love ya! Mean it!! :grouphug:
