Dead Man's Chest discussion (SPOILERS PERMITTED)

Now that several people have been to see it, thought we could have a proper discussion.

I'd been looking forward to it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only real criticism is that (after more than 2.5 hours ) it's only half a film! That's the trouble with them having filmed two back to back, I guess.

When I suggested staying through the end credits, I didn't mean to build any expectations - it's just a funny little quip, but I'd have been annoyed if I hadn't seen it and then others were talking about it afterwards. We always wait these days, just in case.

I loved it! The wheel scene was awesome; impressed with how they did that!

Was miffed at how they turned it into POTC2.2 rather than POTC3 by the cliffhanger ending though.. Also, I was dissapointed as the cinema showed a brief advert for a POTC 2 toy; sorta ruined it a little.

Other than that, great!

The whole cannibal islanders part had me in stitches the whole time.
especially when the pirates where swinging the ball cages back and forth to that classical music

The undead monkey jack was brilliant! "Where's the monkey? I need to shoot something!"

The three-way fight honestly i loved this film!

That ending though it will know be known as THAT ending!
I liked it though (aside from the we have to wait about a YEAR to see the next bit! part) i'd completely forgotten that Barbossa would be making another appearance! And best of all, he got to eat his apple!!!!!

Contrary to how it may have sounded on my post on the other 'Pirates' thread, I really did enjoy the film Deb.
It was different from the first film in my eyes because the first one was a swashbuckling pirate film with a bit of ghost story thrown in. The second is pretty much a fantasy film from the start. Slightly less realistic I guess.
I also realise the stupidity in that statement given that the first film focussed on un-dead pirates who turned into skeletons at the full moon!

One thing has been bothering me. How come the monkey is still un-dead and cannot be killed? Wasn't the curse lifted at the end of the first film?
Maybe it is linked to why Barbosa is alive.

Hey Kev, I thought that too, I ws kinda like "Umm how?" But I like the idea of it being linked to why Barbossa is alive!

Now I could start up some serious POTC quotage, but I'd be here all day.

I'm going to see it again tomorrow sad? me?! never!

I loved it! My one criticism is that it was just a bit too long, I did start to fidget towards the end even though I was still enjoying it. I do worry though that with Jack last being seen jumping into the jaws of the Kracken that we won't see much of him on screen until well into the film on POTC 3

Totally agree with you mate; I got my brother's copy of POTC 1 just to see that bit.

Who honestly stays there to watch it all?! If anyone did for this film, I'd much appreicate if they fill in the details for me on what happened in the mini bit.

I thought the movie was fantastic, but I didn't see the way it ended coming. I was shocked to see Barbossa coming down the steps and couldn't believe that the film was finishing there.

There were some brilliant scenes, Captain Jack tied to the wood trying to escape, the crew in the round cages and the wheel scene.

I can't wait to go and see it again and for the next film to come out

Saw the film this morning and thought it was fantastic. The humour and suspense was brilliant.

Thanks for the heads up about staying till the end... only 7 of us braved through the entire credits. Glad I did so

Suspect that this film would benefit from a second visit to the cinema

Just got back from the cinema. I found the film a bit slow going to start with and was rather disappointed that we were left with a cliff hanger. I'm glad I'd been told about the extra bit at the end, although DS(15) muttered all the way through the credits that there'd be nothing to see. On the whole I enjoyed the film but preferred the Curse of the Black Pearl.

What did anyone make of the simmering attraction between Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly? They almost had to do it with the (unexpected) popularity of Captain Jack following the first film, but where do they go with it now? Do they just ignore it altogether in POTC3? Dh thinks someone will have to perish.

I hadn't picked up on this, which is unusual, because normally I over-analyse these things. Glad that J/T Grandma has also provided the answer.

I read an article in the Sunday Times magazine a couple of weeks ago which said he'd be resurrected for POTC3, so as soon as I saw him, I knew that would be the end. Like I said, though, I was disappointed that I'd sat through 2.5 hours of what is effectively half a film.

At the end of the "curse of the black pearl" after the credits the monkey swims up to the are where Barbossa is supposeldy dead and stels a coin from the chest, hence why he is still un-dead.

Next area for discussion: How is Barbossa still alive? And did anyone else notice that Jack's compass kept pointing twords Elizabeth? At one point when they are looking for the chest Elizabeth holds the compass and it points twords Jack......

Also Will looked a bit peeved when Elizabeth kissed Jack which to me seems to say that Will and Elizabeth will not be on a happy road, and possiblt she will end up with Jack?

Also when Jack is "eaten" by the kracken maybe he was just sent to Davey Jones locket, meaning he is now on the ship with the rest of the barnical people?

I went to see the movie last night. My first question was going to be about why the monkey is undead, but I should have known someone would already have anwered this (It really bothered me last night)
I found the confusion of Elizabeth and her feelings for Jack promising for the next film. Isn't Keira a lucky girl getting to kiss two gorgeous guys? I don't think Will Turner came out very well from this film anyway, wanted him to be a bit more romantic.
Some fantastic action sequences like others mentioned, the wheel and the kraken, but felt I would have liked it to slow down a little. Very frustrated with the ending but I can see they would do this to guarantee box office for part 3.
Verdict: a really enjoyable adventure but a mentally tiring to watch. Johnny Depp can't be beat.
