First of all, I want to thank all of you for your prayers, help and concern. I'm once again touched by the kindness of the people on these boards.

DD had her appt. today with the pediatric endo. and she does have Grave's disease and it has affected her eyes and her reflexes. Her resting heart rate is about 140. They are going to treat her with meds, one is a beta blocker (propranolol) to bring the heart rate down the other (propylthiourac) is for the thyroid. She will take each of these 3x a day indefinately. If she has a reaction to the meds she will be given radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid. Surgery is not an option. She will have a sonogram sometime next week to rule out any malignancies. She is also being tested for diabetes as she is exhibiting symptoms of this as well as the Graves.

She was a little out of sorts tonight, way too much for a 9 y/o to handle. Shes a trooper though, and I'm sure we can get her thru this.

Again, thanks for all of your support. Hugs back to all of you.:grouphug:

I will keep your Daughter in my thoughts and prayers. At least you know what you're fighting now!

Your daughter will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Hang in there....

You and your dd are in my prayers. What a tough thing for someone so young.

Take care and hugs to you both.

Glad to hear your DD is starting treatment. I remember hating the way I felt when I was sick, always tired and my heart would race when I got into bed...yuck! Anyway, just a word of advice, I was on Inderol (propranolol) to regulate my heart before my treatment and it blocks potassium absorbtion so I would have terrible "charlie horse" type cramps. Make sure that your DD gets plenty of potassium, eats bananas, takes a suppliment, etc. to help prevent this side effect.

Does your DD have tumors/goiters on the thyroid or is it the thyroid itself? I had two large tumors and the actual thyroid was "turned off". I had the radioactive iodine and it destroyed the tumors but left the thyroid alone since it wasn't working and didn't absorb the iodine. Because of this, I do not have to take synthroid and my free T4 and TSH levels are normal. I say this to let you know that DD might not have to take medication forever if she had the same type I had.

Hugs to you and DD and let me know if you have any other questions.

Sending prayers and dust to your DS and you. Here's hoping that since you know what it is it can be controlled and your DS feels much better soon!
