my DS was at army boot camp so I assume they are about the samething. First of all tell him how proud we are of him and wish him well. As for gifts, thats really hard because they really can't take anything with them not on the list. They do check this because they make you unpack as a group. Also, you can't really send him anything because that will just get him in trouble. My suggestion would be something on his list so that he doesn't have to buy it himself. My ds had to have dark brown towels and wash cloths and running shoes and tidy whitie underwear that we didn't have and had to go buy. Maybe a gift card to a place that sells these things or maybe just get his list and buy things from that. We wrote my ds everyday which was 10 push-ups for every letter. (his nickname was push-powell, even his drill sgt. kids called him that) but he later said that was the #1 thing that kept him going, so stock up on stamps and paper!!
