If you had to choose between DDP or staying Club Level, which would you go with? It would be me, DH, and our two kids. My kids eat like birds . . . they just pick a little here, a little there. It's tough to get them to eat a full meal, which is why I'm thinking DDP would just not be good for us. DH doesn't eat much either when he's busy and on the go a lot like we will be at WDW.

I, on the other hand, love a good meal! We will be staying at AKL - will I be happy with the concierge offerings?

I am going to move this over to the main restaurant board since it's not just a DDP question, but more a question about the offerings at the AKL Concierge.

I think i'm almost the perfect person to respond to your query!

On our last trip we tried concierge - at AKL no less - for the first time. We've done DDP a few times now. Our situation was that I had booked during free dining, and later got cheap air to go a day early. The savings covered - almost - a night at AKL concierge.

For us DDP was a better deal.

On the one hand, it was REALLY COOL having acess to the lounge. It was also great fun being able to get a beverage - includig adult ones - each time we came from our room. Since our stay was specifically before the rest of our package - we did not have park tickets that day - so we spent the whole time - mostly - at the resort.

I was a tad disappointed in the food offerings. The breakfast offerings were the best. they had oatmeal, some fresh fruit, hot beverages, yogurt, LOVE the lemonade and mango smoothie on tap.
The afternoon offerigs were just okay. They had the smallest chicken wings I've ever seen. the cocolate chip cookies were just okay, not the Toll House onesI was envisioning. Mostly the cookies and treats are the same ones they offer in Boma and the food court. (you can buy them a la carte in the fridge case). They did offer my favorite soup, but I had already scored some in the Mara during lunch. By the time it was served at teh concierge lounge, it was really thick and almost gloppy. The afternoon beer was nice, as was the coffee, lemonade, cooler of other drinks. Overal, it kind of felt like lots of carbohydrates. I realize concerige isn't supposed to be real meals, and I cna have that kind of breakfast some days, but also like eggs some days.Forthe price, the concierge, I felt, should offer some eggs. (I mean if Hampton Inns can offer eggs). Compared to other places that offer free breakfast witha stay, the offerings at AKL were a bit weak.

But the other downside of concierge is that you can only get the food they offer if you are at the resort. We normally go all day, so we wouldn't be there to take advantage of it. If you are the kind of folks who make afternoon trips to the resort then you'd get more out of it. AKL is certianly a great place to ahng out.

It was also kind of cool that they offer coridals late at night, but how mcu cordials can you drink. It was also kind of cool to see teh Africna wimes, but agin, how much can you drink? and how much of your WDW trip do you want to spend in one spot?
It was also cool to see some of the same folks mutiple times. WE even got to talk to a few folks, so that was kind of nice. I can see how it would be a plus for kids to make friends with other kids.

The rooms are not on the same floor as the lounge, so you do lose some time getting back and forth. Still, the lounge location is really cool, and it's nice to have a quiet spot and feel a little like royalty. I also loved our room, and the turn down service. the staff on the lounge was just okay. Some folks were very helpful. The guy who checked us in was very ill informed though, IMO. One ofthe first things he told me was that my bill wasn't payed. I had to argue with him- and as far as I understand - more or less - when you book only one night at WDW- you pretty much HAVE to pay your entire bill at booking. So maybe we just didn't hit it off right. But literally, I really had to argue with him before he was willing to call and verify that I had payed my bill in full already. Saying it nicely wasn't enough. It was kind of crazy. It seems to me if I said I had paid, the first time, that should have been enough for him to place a call to whomever he called.

I've stayed at most places on WDW and knew what to expect...but our second resort was Pop! We made a joke of it. It was a bit of a contrast to say the least. Still, on DDP you have much flexibility in where you choose to dine. The snack credits and QS credits are pretty flexible. It does require some thinking to plan best usage of DDP credits. Like at each QS meal you have to pick a dessert, and the QS dessert offerings aren't always that great.

I'm not saying we wouldn't do concierge ever again, it did feel a bit royal, but it also requires a certain type of planning to make good use of it. conversely, gettingthe most of DDP takes time. It does take a bit oftime to do all the TS meals on DDP. If yo like a fst pace, or like to go back to your resort avery afternoon, then maybe it's not for you either.

Check out the Club Level/Concierge thread on the resorts board for more info and photos of the offerings at the AKL CL.

For us, we prefer CL to the DDP because the DDP offers more food than we need. And because of the convenience of having the lounge. But the PP is correct in that CL is not a meal replacement (except for bkfst, which is always a continental one, without eggs & meat).

It really depends on what you're looking for. When we travelled with our toddler, we loved having all the fruit, yogurt, cheese, veggies for her since she didn't eat many "prepared" foods then. And she could choose what she wanted this way.

Also, the CL at AKL also offers special things like the pre-planning services of their IPO office, and the chance to take the Sunrise Safari at AK. And you get to use the lounge, which can be nice if you have kids sleeping in the room when you want to read or watch tv or (gasp) work.

Some people love the DDP, though. If you're just comparing on food alone, you'll get way more food for your $$$ on the DDP than the AKL CL (or any CL room at any WDW resort).

Hope this helps!:)

We've done the DDP and CL, and although we really liked both I'd probably pick the dining plan over club level. Last trip we did 14 nights on the deluxe dining, then four nights room only at AKL club level.

I really liked AKL's offerings and breakfast definitely constituted a meal but dinner was really just appetisers. I loved having IPO confirm all our ADRs and things and we'll be doing the same type of trip next time, 14 nights on the plan then 3 nights club level.

I think for you it would depend on the age of your children, if they are 9 or under then you're not wasting much money if they don't eat a lot. If they would need the adult plan and would barely eat then the dining plan may not be for you, and club level and cs meals might work out better.

I really enjoy staying club level but I also enjoy dining out each evening.

I think you would have to be an extremely light eater to just 'survive' on the club lounge food offerings ;)

I agree, especially as the food offered at the club level is in no way intended to be a replacement for the afternoon or evening meal.

I stayed at AKL conceirge last June. The offerings are intended to be appetizers, not full meals. It was crazy in the evening. They would put something out and 3 or 4 people would grab everything. Others would have to wait until it was replenished.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. Fortunately I still have time to decide what to do, but it's a tough decision.

For those mentioning that the CL food is not enough to make a meal out of it, I figured that and wasn't planning on having full meals there . . . for me anyway. For my kids, an uncrustable is plenty for them. I wish I could get them to eat more, but as I said - they eat like birds! LOL!

I just know that if we are not on the DDP (so I can't force DH and the kids to do a lot of TS meals), then I'll be stuck eating a lot of CS, but I'm hoping the CL offerings will ease the pain of only eating CS!! I hope that makes sense. I'm a foodie and I would go nuts only eating CS the whole time.

I'm sure I'll book a couple of TS and they'll just have to deal, but they don't enjoy food the way I do so I don't want to force it on them too much.

From what you've just said then I would go for Club Level and not the DDP :goodvibes You can then just go for CS and some TS if you'd like to. The children can have appetisers in the evening and then if they're still hungry (but doubtful from what you've said lol) you could pop down to the Mara and get some other items.

On our last trip we stayed club level without the dining plan. We loved it. We had planned to have the dining plan but canceled it. We ate 3 table service meals while we were there. The rest of the time we ate counter service or just snacked in the lounge. Every morning we ate breakfast in the lounge. I was glad that we canceled the dining plan because it saved us money and we really enjoyed club level. We had two adults, 3 disney adults and two disney kids. During our trip the stomach bug swept through our rooms and all of the kids were sick at one time during the trip. I would stay club level again over the dining plan.

For us, it would have to be club level. We always stayed at either GF, WL and now we are staying at BWI club levels. We have thought about the dining plan but said that even though you are getting all that food(yum), we get the benefits of the club level service. Whether it be having our rooms ready early which club level makes it more of a priority than non-club level and the pre-stay planning where we can ask many requests and there is a 90% follow through rate. Im forgetting the main part, the food. You get a breakfast which is the ush: bagels, pastries, fruit, yogurt, juice. During the day you get juice and snacks. Evenings you get veggies, sometimes soup or some kind of meat and you get wine and cheese reception.

If you want food and the extra staff, then choose club level. If you want food and not the extra staff, then choose the dining plan.

P.S.-You also get priority check-in. When you arrive at the resort, you ask a bellman to call club level and someone will come down to escort you to the club level check-in where you don't have long lines of people. Believe me, when you take an early flight in, this is the best thing since sliced bread.:thumbsup2

Good luck.:)

For your situation I would do CL. It just sounds like it would fit your family better.

I would go with Club Level because each time my family and I have used it when staying at the Contemporary and Polynesian it makes our time at WDW a lot easier knowing we have the lounge right there. Besides that last month when we stayed at the Contemporary we took full advantage of the 5:00 PM hot hors d'ouvres and etc. Finally we also think that you can make full meals out of those foods, because we were full each time after eating up there in the lounge.

Club level is not a dining plan. If you want to a snack, CS and TS meal a day then you should choose a dining plan option. The dining plan does not equate to savings for everyone. You also are converting US currency into Disney meal tickets and paying for your meals in advance where restaurant offerings are subject to change without notice. Otherwise you might be better paying OP.

AKL Club is one of the better Clubs but if your park plans have you away you might be better off without it or at another resort that aligns better to your plans. You most likely dine at the club for breakfast but if you are unable to get back for appetizers and later cordials and desserts you might consider not getting club.

I'd go with the dining plan but on your first day, purchase some snacks (using snack credits) to keep in the room.

You can also share counter service (say 1 meal between your two kids) and that would allow them to eat a little breakfast and a little lunch.

Also, are you planning any character meals? Those tend to be a great value on the DDP with kids (especially if you plan for dinner and not breakfast) since the cost of 1 character meal is often more than the cost of the day for children 3-9.
