DDP in future

We are lucky enough to be trying out the ddp free this fall. My question is for our next visit. We purchased a 10 day park hopper with no expiration. We will probably only use 3-4 days of the ticket, knowing that we'll be back in the future, and wanted to save on tickets for next time.
If we decide we like the ddp, will we be able to purchase it next time, or can you only get it if you buy park tickets?
We will likely stay on site next time as well if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Right now, the DDP is only available two ways:
  1. Purchase a package which includes onsite hotel + tickets for the entire family. The tickets can be 1-day MYW base passes, if you wish. And they do not have to be used on that particular trip.
    OR
  2. Rent points from a DVC member, stay in a DVC resort and have the DVC owner add the DDP to the ressie. If you do, you will pay for it at checkin. You do not pay the DVC owner. If you choose to rent points, you will not have to buy additional tickets.

(So, basically, you'd have to purchase another ticket, perhaps just a one day ticket, next time, to qualify as you did this year.)

The bad thing is that we'd have to spend $50+/per person for park passes we don't need. I suppose we'd have to calculate out how much we'd save paying for the dining plan vs what we would have spent paying OOP for meals.
This is sad, I'm planning for the next trip when we haven't even gone on our upcoming one yet.

I've learned the same lesson recently: You're better off purchasing just the admission you need, these days. The main reason is the hefty surcharge for the no-expiry option -- expiring passes are so much less expensive that we will be better off putting our no-expiry tickets away for yet-another year, and just buy new passes for this year. In the end, you'll keep pushing those no-expiry ticket out further and further. We won't be buying them again, at least not until the price structure changes again.

We have free dining this fall, bought one day pass. We have a couple of days left from last year's free dining trip and a several days from a trip in January. (I think they were offering free plus option?)

Anyway, we plan to upgrade the one day ticket on another trip. Maybe an AP at the rate I seem to be traveling south lately.

If my calculations are correct, (math is not my subject...)

A 10 day MYW base pass without expiration comes to $32.59 a day. This is about the same price as a one day admission to Hershey Park. I think that is an awesome deal! And as the prices go up each year, the ticket I bought last year was probably less.

And, with fuzzy Disney Math -- any money spent more than six months prior to the trip is not included in the budget. So, by my calculations, I couldn't go to the next town up the road, book a hotel and eat for what my trip to Disney is costing!!!

Your two options are correct when it comes to "buying" the dining plan. However, if the OP wants to get free dining (if it is offered) again, their only option is to buy a Magic Your Way package, which will include another set of park tickets. DVC stays on points, which includes stays on rented points, are not eligable for the free dining offer.

aka-mad4themouse and BirdOfPreyDave's replies clarify this: Unless you're on a DVC reservation, you will have to purchase more admission (even if you don't need it), if the rules remain the same.
