Not to be too anal on what we paid or would have paid if we werent on the 'free' DDP last week--but thought this was interesting to share and to compare.

I figured the 5 nights we were off property we paid an average of $82 per night on food for party of 5 (3a 2c). This included Publix since both non Disney resorts had full kitchen and meals at: Rainforest Cafe/ Bahama Breeze/ Margaritaville/ Planet Hollywood.

Our 3 nights at Beach Club would have cost us just for the DDP $375 for that portion of the trip but it was free this time.

Using the DDP at:
17th: Cosmic Rays/ Turf Club
18th: Spoodles/ ABC Commissary
19th: Cape May Cafe/ Raglan Road
20th: Coronado Springs

All of this would have cost us if we would have had the guts/ and stomach to handle all this food: over $690.49.

It was costing us an average of $82 non WDW and if we had to pay (non-DDP) $230 per day on property.

My first reaction was "yes, but you're comparing apples to oranges." No question, WDW restaurants are more expensive than basically the same food off property. However, you were also doing at least some meal preparation in your kitchen while off property. You could stay in a Disney Vacation Club villa and do some cooking while on property. Also, being off property you have a mandatory car expense....how else are you going to get to the restaurants?

No question, food at WDW costs....it's just a part of the vacation. We spent more on the DDP in May than I would normally pay for WDW meals, but we ate much better. It was a treat for us, and I didn't cook at all (we are DVC).

Your figures are interesting though.

Yes, comparing preparing food yourself to eating at restaurants will yield a very big difference in cash OOP. We are DVC members, and have a full kitchen, so really have the best of both worlds available to us. After the first few years, though, we came to realize that we didn't want to cook on vacation. (Actually cooking didn't bother us much -- it was mostly the clean-up that we objected to! :))

i was doing this more as a FYI of course wasnt trying to compare what it cost on property and off

more amazed/ pleased at what the value of the DDP really is. third time on it but first time trying to keep track if we were not on it what we would have to pay out of the pocket. yes, alot of food and surely wouldnt have ordered all of it.

anyway
