Wow.

We used DDP on our December trip, and as we went along I'd kind of do a little math in my head each meal to figure out how we were doing on the plan. It seemed like DDP was a good deal.

But now that I know the costs of the various things we ordered last time, I decided to sit down and figure out how much we might save next time we go, versus the other ways to save (AAA room-only rate, AP with DDE, etc.).

Wow! People like us who enjoy a nice sit-down meal once a day end up saving more on DDP than any other way! That's impressive!

I guess the only way to save more is to book through AAA and get the DDP package at a discount. So that's what we're going to try to do!

Has anyone else done the numbers and found differently?

Nope--we haven't found a better deal than the DDP. I wish I could remember exactly how much we actually "spent" versus cost of the DDP. I'm sure it was greater than any room discount.

It was even a better deal for us since we went in August when it was free. This year will be even better--our oldest child will be 10 on our next trip. We did a quick run of the numbers, and a moderate resort during value season will be $163 per night (including tax). The cost to us (3A/1C) of the DDP would be $128 per day, bringing the cost of the room (if we were to purchase the DDP) down to $35 per day after tax.

Now, I know the free DDP isn't really "free," because we're giving up other discounts, but the biggest room discount I've seen off a moderate is around $46 a day for AP holders. AAA is 20%, or $29 per night. Neither of those comes close to the $128 a day discount the free DDP gives us.

Of course the best part of the DDP is the freedom and luxury it adds to your trip. Knowing you can order whatever you want and it's already paid for makes for an incredibly relaxing vacation. And that's what, in my opinion, truly makes the DDP a great deal.

Excellent point! :thumbsup2
