DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Generally, Europe will follow it, but only in the same way you guys may or may not follow the Canadian election.
But, even with me as someone who takes an interest we cover it way too much for something that only affects us slightly. Has my life changed due to the T being in charge over there? Not really, or if it has, I certainly haven't realised it. So I'm not sure we need an election night special on 2 UK channels, for an election that has a negligible effect on life over here. There are some of my mates raging on the book of face this morning, which I find strange. People have a vote. People have spoken.

Similarly, I've always been baffled about the amount of time and energy the US media devotes to covering the British royal family. Why on earth do we care about another country's figureheads? Makes no sense to me, but here we are.

And... can someone tell me if a State's electoral votes all go to the same candidate? Like... Georgia has 16 electoral votes. Currently Trump is leading there. If the State is won by Trump, does he automatically get all 16 electoral votes? Or can they be split? Like Biden wins 2 and Trump wins 14?

Looks like Dan gave you a nice explanation on this one. Some feel the electoral college is an archaic system and needs to go away, because it can lead to minority rule (based on the popular vote). Others argue that it's a way to give the entire country a voice, otherwise if it was by popular vote then New York and L.A. would elect every President.

That's pretty much how I feel watching US politics too. Except I'm in the van.

The winner of the US presidential election is an old white guy who is in it to make himself rich and convince 165 million people he really cares about them.

:rotfl:

I would like to see us move away from a 2 party system, and have elections for the ? number of candidates simultaneously. But, that would be a complete overhaul and will never happen.

I think the 2-party system is broken too It's become like sports. People blindly follow their team no matter what. I'd much rather we go back to thinking for ourselves about various issues. Sometimes one side is right, sometimes the other. Nobody has all the answers.

And... can someone tell me if a State's electoral votes all go to the same candidate? Like... Georgia has 16 electoral votes. Currently Trump is leading there. If the State is won by Trump, does he automatically get all 16 electoral votes? Or can they be split? Like Biden wins 2 and Trump wins 14?
Dan beat me to it...mostly. For all but Nebraska and Maine, it's all or nothing.

Morning all and breaking news. The winner of the US presidential election is an old white guy who is in it to make himself rich and convince 165 million people he really cares about them.
::yes::
Dang. Since you're so amazing at predicting the future, can you tell me what today's lottery number are please?

going back to my old bakery days. I enjoyed it then. I've always been that long term planner, but can't do that with DW. She has 3 or 4 more years until she can retire, so I've accepted that as my window now. So, my goal now is to work for enough $ for Disney vacations
Submit paperwork from McDonalds and see if they decline for being supplier to the government or some such idiocy.

Hmph. Jupiter.... I think not. Did you not see my avatar????????
Oh, Marvin is another of my Heroes.
I'm still waiting for that Kaboom, myself.

In this instance, Calvin's choice of Jupiter was peripheral.
The implied comparison was between our little group and his mom's reaction to the "robot" in their midst.

X-3.. Whatever…

It does, actually. Years ago it made Playboy's list for top beaches in the world.
Well then what are you waiting for?
Surfs up!

And we expect pictures.
(But whether they're of you at the beach or random images from that magazine article in question, you may need to be careful about what gets posted.)

I should have gone to bed earlier.
Yes you should have.
I did...
Still didn't sleep very well.

voted then came home for dinner and travel show watching, Rick Steve's Europe.
Much better use of the time.
I was reading and watching episodes of "The History Guy", myself.

Yeah, my vote doesn't matter here in Massachusetts, but I vote anyways.
I suffer from a similar disenfranchisement down this a way.
But every single other office is determined by a straight majority, so it still matters.

So you really were reading it for the articles?
Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more…

Can’t say that you do; other then as an exercise in schadenfreude

That said there are a few things that might have some impact on the UK in relation to say... NATO, alliances, treaties and agreements, but that all works on longer time lines.

You hope.

And... can someone tell me if a State's electoral votes all go to the same candidate?
I rather like that it was Dan who explained it (and right well).
I find it frightening that a large percentage of our actual citizenry don’t have near the grasp of it as he does.

Others argue that it's a way to give the entire country a voice,
It’d work if there was no gerrymandering.
However...

With this guy, sure, you are totally right.

The earth shattering one?
Similarly, I've always been baffled about the amount of time and energy the US media devotes to covering the British royal family. Why on earth do we care about another country's figureheads? Makes no sense to me, but here we are.
On a very deep level, maybe we always wanted Cromwell to finish the job on the toffs, and get a President of a republic, and you never really wanted to let George III go, whatever Lin Manuel Miranda says.
Others argue that it's a way to give the entire country a voice, otherwise if it was by popular vote then New York and L.A. would elect every President.
I always thought a proportional allocation of the electoral colleges votes based on the respective percentages of the candidates would have been a more elegant solution.
Like you say, NY, Cali and Chicago get you over a third of the way there if you are a Dem. 4 million people voted Republican in Cali, and it's effectively a dead race.
Or the flip side, Biden would have taken 1 less vote out of Florida than Trump, as it was 2% in it. Seems intuitively fairer.

Morning all and breaking news. The winner of the US presidential election is an old white guy who is in it to make himself rich and convince 165 million people he really cares about them.
this. Our Trump lite has said he is quitting in March as the pay isn't high enough. Don't let the barn door hit you on the way out, sunshine.

We can fly to outer space, but can't figure out how to count votes.
"1+1 =.... um... better get an answer from the Supreme Court."

On the job front, I applied for a bunch of stuff yesterday, going back to my old bakery days.
Good luck! Did you actually apply at a bakery??
I read that as "topless beaches" instead of "top beaches". Then, I thought of it being cold. That was a good start to my morning.
::yes::::yes::
Electoral college is all or nothing, and it is based on the # of US House representatives which is based on the population and the gerrymandering of districts to garnish party votes. It's as good a system as any, trying to have everyone's vote count, instead of just the mob rule option. However, the largest cities (NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc) have increased to be so large that they are deciding elections.
Thanks for the lesson. :)

Ah! Interesting.
Up here, living in the middle of the country, with most of the population in Ontario and Quebec (to the east of me). I frequently turn on the TV on election day to hear "The ____ have formed a majority government" even before the rest of the country's votes are counted.
That's pretty much how I feel watching US politics too. Except I'm in the van.

:lmao:

Wait... maybe I shouldn't be laughing.
Warmer there than here. Was 59 on the way to work this morning. A mite nippy on the bike.
:shiver:
You're growing soft! I was on my bike last and the temp was around 30F.
Oh, Marvin is another of my Heroes.

I'll get the Illudium PU-36 explosive space modulator fixed eventually...

I was a little surprised by that too. :)

Morning chaps from a frosty mother country. Its about 4 degrees over here, so I guess Ponzie, Jeff and Darcy would be breaking out the factor 20 just to get a light tan. Whereas this is called "Big Coat Weather" over here. 1st day of new lockdown. Maybe I can offer to help Pennsylvania and Georgia count votes.

I was a little surprised by that too. :)
I majored in Politics, minored in History & Law. Comes with the territory. I would have thought that was blatantly obvious, with me building toy shops for a living. Wait, what?
You're growing soft!
'Tis what the lady uttered.
It’d work if there was no gerrymandering.
However...
I think its all they've got left in the bag, with the demographic changes in the suburbs.

Have a great big beautiful today fellas.

-1C here. We've had huge temp swings last couple days. 17C couple days ago.
1st day of new lockdown. Maybe I can offer to help Pennsylvania and Georgia count votes.
We started our new lockdown on Monday. Can't say that I'm thrilled that it's back to that again.

All too frequently.

Morning, Gents! Well, not much to report today except that, well, there's not much to report. So having said all that, you're free and clear to move about the cabin, just make sure to hold on to something if we hit turbulence. Have a good day, and we'll chat throughout.

TTFN

I guess you are asking the wrong demographic, in that UK/Canada and the US are a bit more intertwined than others.
Generally, Europe will follow it, but only in the same way you guys may or may not follow the Canadian election.
But, even with me as someone who takes an interest we cover it way too much for something that only affects us slightly. Has my life changed due to the T being in charge over there? This is true, which I guess is the reason we hear about what's going on there as well. I just figured the way the rest of the world loved Obama and this would have been an interesting one to follow.

Worked (and still working) the night shift, so have kept an eye on the election throughout.
Not being overly familiar with your election process, I was at first surprised that they (whoever the "they" might be) did not declare Biden the winner early in the evening.
I think at that point it was something like 210-108 Biden ahead. Then all of a sudden, after no movement it was roughly 225-210.
And even more surprising (to me) that while (at the time of this writing) it shows Biden "winning" 238-213, it also shows Trump ahead, counting the states/electoral votes that are being led by him, but not decided.

They won't declare a winner until that person has reached 270 electoral votes. With so many mail in ballots still out there it may take a while before a winner is declared.

And... can someone tell me if a State's electoral votes all go to the same candidate? Like... Georgia has 16 electoral votes. Currently Trump is leading there. If the State is won by Trump, does he automatically get all 16 electoral votes? Or can they be split? Like Biden wins 2 and Trump wins 14?

Pretty much, with the exception of those states mentioned by others.

::yes:: Cover your a**.

Yep

There was a whole segment on the net that I saw yesterday devoted to nothing but all the memes about Canada watching the US elections.
This one seems fairly Canadian:

Our news networks covered it last night, most likely because Canada is tied quite closely to the US. The relationship between the person in the Whitehouse and our prime minister can have a big impact on the how we work together.

We do work closely together, so I can understand that your media would be covering it...was just curious how much.

I believe, judging from the ongoing electoral processes, that it might be time to hold on.
They won't declare a winner until that person has reached 270 electoral votes. With so many mail in ballots still out there it may take a while before a winner is declared.
Considering how close some States are, it could be a very long while.

Now explain this to me.
Why is the media reporting that Biden won Michigan:

when the Government of Michigan's website shows that Trump won:
536709

Both were updated late last night.

And even more importantly, why is there a Blankenship running instead of looking for treasure on Oak Island?

The projection models that the Networks use are directly tied to the individual counties and they do their own tabulation. They calculate the remaining votes in the respective counties, not the state as a whole, and work out the remaining votes in those counties against how the 2 (or 4) candidates are tracking in that county, which would give you a total assumed vote count. Once the threshold of 99.5% statistical probability is crossed, they project the winner. The states always take a while to count votes, it just normally doesn't matter as the states with wider margins would normally deliver a result of the total election and everyone loses interest.
Hence the Electoral college being in December, as obviously before counting machines it took forever.
It looks like the Governors website is showing a blip in the number, because both the candidates numbers are off.

Over to you Chief, on the weather desk.

Hey, everyone! Well, it's 8:00 as I type this, I just got in the office 10 minutes ago, and I left the house at 6:20 am. Just so everyone knows, it's a 20 minute commute from my house to work. It started off with me having to wait while the emergency services helped with an accident, I really hope they are ok because it looked horrible, and then I got a flat that I had to deal with. Thankfully the flat happened outside a Dunkin Donuts, so I was set with my tea....and an extra breakfast if I felt up to it. My tire picked up a razor blade off the road, jus t hope it can be fixed. And now I have a headache....this is going to be an interesting day.

Yep, and the law suits are flying.

Who knows, but I'm sure there's some wonky explanation that'll pop up somewhere. I'd have to look into it a bit more, but to me, those numbers from the states website show Trump won and not Biden.

And even more importantly, why is there a Blankenship running instead of looking for treasure on Oak Island?

I've got nothing

Yesterday we hovered at or below the freezing mark, today we are headed for the mid teens Celsius or in the 60s F. There has ben some wacky weather lately but hey, it's 2020.
