Well it has been an eventful first day of the year....started it off with church this morning then came home for dinner and had some cabbage so that we might have good luck and money in the new year...then went to the Marshall basketball game..too bad the team did not show up!! Then came home and watched "State of Play" very good movie....then I hear a noise outside and opened the back door and scared off someone breaking into my outbuilding!!! I feel like Barney Fife outside with my PJs on carrying a flashlight...from what I cna tell they did not get anything my mowers and weedeaters are still there...I think I scared them off before they coudl get their hands on anything...I hope they dont come back tongiht...Grrrrr the neighborhood has been having trouble with kids busting mailboses and light poles and they seem to be getting braver now and moving closer to the houses....I might have to bite the bullet and buy a video secruity system for outside!!!
I've seen some reasonably priced on newegg recently, and a few with only one cam for under 100. Sad what you have to resort to for some neighborhood troublemakers.

Oh my. Scary. Maybe think about motion sensor lights? Did you call the police? Don't try to handle it yourself!

I have not replaced my light at the end of the driveway yet until I know it wont get knocked off again...I bought one it is just in the garage until the dust settles...I did go outthere myself LOL..in my PJs carrying a flashlight from Shari's purse..I am sure I was scary had we met face to face :rotfl2: The kids ran the batteries in my Mag Lite down LOL:rotfl2:

Sorry to hear about your problem.I cant stand thieves !!! I grew up and was raised where you could leave your doors unlocked and not worry. I would get these lights replaced. It could be where they are busting out lights to see which houses are fixing/or not fixing them and hitting the houses that are still dark.

Are all the dads out there entering Disney's contest for a trip for 4?

It's part of their announcement last night,

They are giving away 1 trip a day from now until February 29th.

Enter here....

I want to see a DISDad win one of these trips.
I'll enter everyday knowing that I won't win.. :sad2:

The High Chair and Car Seat on the other hand, I can't seem to figure out what to do with. I can't bring myself to throwing them in a dumpster especially since the car seat looks like brand new and was only used for about nine months before DW decided that we needed a newer one with more features. There is one distant family member that may have need for this stuff but if he doesn't want it...

I just find it hard to understand how we got to the point where even Goodwill is scared to take baby items for fear of legal repercussions and someone with little means must pay the price for all new stuff at the department stores. :sad2:
Keep in mind that car seat have an expiration date. Look on the bottom for the seat to find it. It is usually 6 years after the manufacture date. That could be a reason why Goodwill won't take them/:confused3

What do you guys do with baby stuff after they are no longer babies?

Specifically, we have a high chair, car seat, and stroller. We tried selling these at the local consignment shop, but they won't buy / sell items like this due to the possibility that there may have been recalls and they don't want to get sued by a buyer. I tried giving them away at Goodwill, but got the same story there.

I may try to re-purpose the stroller into a carry all. Even though it was used pretty well and made four trips with us down to WDW, it is still in great shape.

We hung onto our stuff. Well, just the high chair, we put it up in the attic and then we used it with the grand kids. :) They've out grown it and now we're waiting for DD2 to give us a reason to bring it down. :rotfl2:

Sorry to hear that. Now that they shut down the pill mill in Scioto County the druggies need to steal more for gas money to travel further.

Stroller and high chair went to the local crisis pregnancy center. Car seat got tossed because supposedly they have an expiration date. Hate to do it, but I would not want to give it to someone and have it break in an accident same reason I wouldn't buy a used motorcycle helmet.

I didn't think of checking for a local women's shelter as an option.

Pretty much everything we had was used twice since there was only a 3 year gap between our boys. We purposely held on to things after son #1 grew out of them, anticipating another child. We didn't expect to have a third, so we blessed other families that needed the stuff and gave it away. Either families expecting another child, or first time parents. Then when DD surprised us, we had to start all over again, but that was okay (there's a 5 yr difference between son #2 and DD). Others blessed us with stuff, and we bought some stuff. DW was not able to have any more following DD's birth, so we knew then we were done and once again gave it all away as she grew out of things, rather than holding on to it.

The carseats though were USED, USED, USED and well worn, so they were thrown away. Each child got a brand new one and used them until they were no longer fitting inside them. I didn't want to give those away simply because they were older and well used.

Thank you one and all for the birthday wishes. I decided to have Carolyn take me out to dinner and left the girls here. We went to a "Benihana style" restaurant. The girls were supposed to have a gluten free frozen pizza, but they called when we got to the restaurant and said they couldn't find it in the freezer. They decided that they weren't hungry anyway.:confused3

Need another favor from the group. How would you explain in non-technical terms the pros and cons of laptop versus tablet? I am a nerd/techie/geek and have been since high school. I used to program my math homework on punch cards and run them at the local community college while I was in High School.
DW's Macbook is getting slower and slower. I tried to add ram (to upgrade to Mac OS X) but the chips I installed were not recognized (don't trust Amazon even if their chips are half what Apple charges). She was thinking of maybe getting an iPad and when I tried to explain the differences she got what DD12 calls a "Donut Look" with her eyes glazing right over. I know after 27 years of marriage I should be able to speak her language, but when computers come into the picture I speak nerd.

So can any of you help?

I think Aaron summed it up pretty well. If she does any picture editing she might want a laptop too. It's possible on a tablet, but not always easy.

Mostly she checks FB and the Dis. I am thinking she should be able to use a tablet

I think multiquoting is easier on a laptop and I would much rather type something long on a laptop than on a tablet. A bluetooth keyboard can alleviate some of those issues but you'd probably want to get a case which ties the keyboard to the laptop if she plans on using it in bed or on a couch.

Answers to about three questions can determine whether a tablet is an adequate replacement for a laptop.
1) Do you regularly type more than a page of text at a time? If yes, lean toward a laptop (but this can be mitigated with a bluetooth keyboard, allowing you to still use a tablet).

2) Is Flash absolutely necessary for anything you regularly do on your computer? If yes, you need a laptop. Mobile Flash is dead. Even Adobe says so.

3) How often do you use a program other than Email or a web browser? If any of them necessary? Is there a substitute available for the tablet. If you rarely use anything other than a Email or the web, and there are substitutes available for any other software you use, go for the tablet. It's lighter, easier to use, and generally has about twice the battery life.

:thumbsup2 Very good advice.

When we had issues people took their deer cameras and chained them around their house. They are camera's you chain to a tree that will take pictures day or night whenever they detect motion. I think they are less than $100.

Our goodwill won't take clothing with metal or zippers on it. We've given some of our stuff to friends and relatives and sold some stuff through the Kids Exchange. Its essentially a big travelling kids consignment sale. You can give them stuff with the instructions to donate everything that doesn't sell.

Morning guys!

3 more days until we are in WDW! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

I'm just a bit excited about this. ;)

5 days from now at this point I'll be at WDW....Sitting in a bathtub full of ice.

Morning DisDads! Happy Monday.

Sorry to hear about your run in with the other side Steve. +1 on the motion sensor lighting and the trail cameras. Also +1 on firearms and the Castle Doctrine.

On a lighter note - College football today!

Cheers,
Indy

It is snowing here, although doesn't look like any accumulation.

Back to reality...

Vacation is officially over.

I have a couple more days to enjoy at home, but I don't want to go back either. I have been healthy most all year and feels like I'm getting a cold. Or, it may be work allergy.

Really sad story. I'm not sure about assault rifle issue, but if he was shooting at what he thought was coyotes on his own land with a shotgun or pistol, then there would not be a criminal charge. We've had many of those here, still sad, but with people hunting on other people's property without permission.
Well, I didn't give all the details to the story. He told investigators that he had given them permission to play paintball in the woods. He just didn't realize they'd be there that day.
I live just about a mile and a half away and I have woods and coyotes too. I'm sure I've shot coyotes from the same pack he's been having problems with, but I don't just start blindly firing bullets into the woods. Before I put the gun to my shoulder and pull the trigger, I make sure I know what I'm shooting at and that there's nobody behind my target in case I miss.
He hasn't been arrested at this point, but conservation officers are investigating it and will turn it over to the prosecutor. The assault rifle is legal as long as it was a semi auto and not fully automatic. I've got to think there will be charges of some sort just for the simple fact that he basically sprayed 15 rounds into the tree line from 300 yards away without verifying what he was shooting at.

Last year, we had our first NASCAR Cup race, but I could not get tickets.

I wanted to go to the NASCAR race too but tickts were not easy to come by!!
That's funny. There were tons of empty seats around me at that race. :rolleyes1 :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Yeah, it seems like the idiots are getting braver all the time. I'd definitely make sure you get some good batteries in that mag light. Like somebody else mentioned earlier, I'd fix the light they broke too.

There has been a couple that has been robbing homes out in the country around here for the past month or so. They basically come up to the house acting like they had car trouble or are selling something and then take the family at gunpoint... unless nobody's home, then they just do a b&e and grab what they can.

I came home from work one evening a couple of weeks ago and found what turned out to be an insurance salesman, who my mother in law told to talk to us:mad:, walking across my yard. He started walking towards my truck as I was coming up the driveway. I rolled down my window and told him to get in his car and leave or I'd run his @$$ over. Regardless of whether you're legit or not, if I'm just getting home from work and I see you running across my yard and down my driveway, you aren't selling me anything.

Right now, I've got my spotlight charged and by the backdoor and the 12 gauge and some buckshot are hidden away in a convenient (to me) location.
