DDA Chapter 22

Speaking of teaching....we had our first Religion class last night. I am teaching 2nd grade this year, along with my same friend that I taught 1st grade with last year. Our DDs are both class together, so we decided to move up a grade with them and teach them during their First Communion year. After this, I'm done! 2nd grade seems a world of difference from 1st. All of the kids can read! Plus all of our kids this year speak perfect English. Last year there were quite a few Spanish kids, which made it difficult.

Good luck! I taught Sunday School for several years and mostly enjoyed it.

That's good to hear. We may need to institute a rule like that. We emphasized yesterday at orientation that it's best to make a "clean break" and leave us to deal with the crying children. We also told them that they shouldn't peek in the windows, because at least one of the kids is sure to notice and announce it to everyone. I had almost calmed one little boy down, and then mom's face appeared in the window and messed everything up. She was one of the two that ended up not leaving. The second mother that stayed was the one that rubbed us the wrong way at the very beginning of the day. She was very judgmental about everything starting with the fact that we are addressed as Mrs. <LastName> by the kids. It's hard having parents there the first day, because to the casual observer, it seems like complete and utter chaos. They don't realize that is what a typical first day looks like and that we do have control and that it will run smoothly in a matter of a couple of days.

At her new school Princess has to call her teachers "Mrs. H" and "Mrs. P". Last year she had Miss Debbie. When DS was in preschool they started calling the teachers by their last names after the 2's class. His 3's teacher was Mrs. Clark.

Beth I'm sorry that it is so hard Maybe this is a sign that it is time to move on to a new career I agree that being a teacher has to be tiring because that is how I felt as a sub.

Speaking of subbing, I was at school today and all the teachers that I bumbed into kept reminding me that they miss having me around. I think Colby's teacher would have had me help out the rest of the day had I not bolted for the door after snack

I am having a pity party over here...every time I think I've drug myself out of it, I seem to fall back into the punch bowl.

SO....maybe if I have something else to keep my mind off of my own perils I will do better. I will start accepting names for the 3rd (or is it 4th) annual DDA Ornament Exchange.

We have 3's, and it's pretty common practice in our area of the country to call teachers and other adults by Mr./Mrs. Last Name. My name is easy to say. My co-teacher's name is a little more difficult, but the kids really do catch on fast. We have said that they can call her Mrs. C, but they do get her full name quickly. In fact, they seem to use her name more than mine, because they seem to think it's fun to say. We have some call us "Hey, Teacher" all year, and we still respond to that while gently reminding them of our names.

Princess keeps saying she wants to call me Nanny. But she can't ever remember - she keeps calling me Elizabeth. Some of my friends have charges that do address them as "nanny", but I have never wanted to be called that.

Thanks, Deb! Honestly, this is what first days are like with kids new to school, and it is definitely tiring. The only really hard part about it is that parents are changing and becoming so critical of everything. It is really a noticeable difference from when I started teaching preschool about 10 years ago. There are still many wonderful, supportive parents out there, but there are definitely more and more that think they have all the answers and want everything done their way. These parents also have perfect children that everyone should be constantly fawning over. I really do feel for the elementary teachers.

That is too cute! I really do love the things that kids say. I had one little boy tell me this morning that he didn't want to be a big boy anymore. He was a really a little boy, and he wanted Mommy right NOW. Fortunately, a really cool toy car diverted his attention from Mommy long enough to let him realize that he was having fun. At snack time, he told me that he was a big boy after all.

I bought it for Matthew, since we collect the llama books and I traditionally buy each kid a new book on the first day of school, but he definitely doesn't relate to the theme of a preschool child missing his mommy. He barely says goodbye to me when I drop him off at school.

I bought it for Matthew, since we collect the llama books and I traditionally buy each kid a new book on the first day of school, but he definitely doesn't relate to the theme of a preschool child missing his mommy. He barely says goodbye to me when I drop him off at school.

Thanks! Thursday is Llama Llama Misses Mama day. The school didn't want to buy it, so that came out of my pocket. Today we did The Kissing Hand, but I paraphrased, because it's a bit long for 3's. I am sure that almost everyone will do much better on Thursday.
