DDA Chapter 17

Stephanie – today was not a day of inconvenience for me. Today was a day of public safety, ensuring your friends, and millions of others like them from around this nation got to view, firsthand, the history of today safely. With that came issues that Joe Citizen would not even begin to comprehend. Things like how do we get 3 million people in and out of our nation’s Capital with limited resources, how do we move those 3 million people on our metro system, that can only accommodate 125,000 people per hour, what are we going to do with all of the cars that are trying to park at a metro lot that only has 5,000 parking spaces, how are we going to ensure that in the mobs of people someone isn’t going to get pushed onto the train track (which at least one person that I know of got hit by a train, causing that track to become shut down), how are we going to control the millions of people on the Mall area after the swearing in is over and they all want to leave at once, deal suspicious packages reported at metro stations as well as a car left parked at a station with the engine running and no one around (suspicious? you betcha!), plus all of the credible threat reports (just because they weren’t broadcast doesn’t mean there weren’t any), among a myriad of other issues. As you all watched the events of today unfold, I’m sure you saw the hundreds of police officers lining the streets of DC. There were hundreds more that you didn’t see, either on rooftops, in the crowds undercover, or in vehicles. Those officers came from all over the country and were deputized to assist for today. Yes, hundreds of officers. Millions of people. Not a good ratio. All of the officers had an incredible job to do, with little sleep, little opportunity for food and facilities, in freezing temps and wind chills, some unruly crowds, all with a smile on their face to ensure our visitors had a memorable time. So no, I wouldn’t call it an inconvenience. I would call it a huge challenge, to make sure everyone (to include all my brothers and sisters) made it home safely. I’m very proud to say, for the most part, we succeeded.

It’s been a very long, stressful, cold, and tiring day. I’m going to go relax and try to get some sleep. Here’s a huge :grouphug: and some :wizard: for all.

Wow! What a day and an amazing job by all involved. I've heard nothing by great reports from friends who were there about how smoothly it went from the spectator's point of view. Great job!!!

I had to be sure I wasn't missing out on the opportunity to plan something. I am kind of disappointed! :p

I've been hunting for something to plan! I was thinking last night that I could really "research" Branson this time and see what we can and want to do. Nevermind that we've been going there since I was 9, suddenly I'm going to research it. (Actually, I think that I still will some. SOOOO much new stuff has popped up in the last 10 years or so and I want to find some new things to do that are cheap, but fun. That will give us some extra stuff for the off-park days.)

I also found myself offering to help plan a dance mom's trip. I told her that it's kind of my obsession and since I didn't have anything to plan right now I'd welcome the chance to help her.

ACK! This Saturday? Too close! Too close! Must have approximately 274 days to properly plan and execute things! :scared:

Well, not really. I have only been planning DS's birthday since October.

I've been thinking about Terra's since probably October too, but apparently this is where my procrastination to actually do pops up. Last night I realized that we're only about 3 weeks out from her party. If I've got to make half the stuff and maybe even get a couple of things shipped from the UK, I had better get moving!

Elizabeth,

You can help my SIL's plan their parents 50th anniversary party. I finally told DH just to tell them how much money he was putting in and then let them handle it, they keep coming up with more ideas that equal more money, so we have set a limit as to how much we are contributing.

I think that's the best thing you could have done. From the beginning it sounded like the SILs might get out of hand. Let them do that with their own money! :thumbsup2

Good moring, DDA!

Looks like it will be a suddenly quiet day for my. My charge's mom is sick with the stomach yuckiness now so she won't be here after all. I guess maybe we'll take Phil to work today and I'll take Terra to "do something fun" as she was asking for yesterday. We had settled on going Glow Golfing yesterday, but now she can have more options I think.

Glynis - Flat Stanley arrived last night and Terra has already cut and decorated it. She's excited to take him along on whereever we go this week! Thanks for sending him. We'll get him back to Leslie soon.

You definitely need to set a limit! Good luck! I don't think I want to get tangled up in that, but thanks for the offer! :rotfl2:

Marci - The cat makes a noise that is between a wheeze and a hum. But if you want to be technical, it's snoring! :rotfl2:

Good morning. I feel it's going to be one of those days that I am not going to find the drive to do anything.

Have a great Wednesday!!

My cat snores, sometimes he will sleep under my bed and I can hear him when I'm trying to go to sleep, he is 13 though and didn't snore until he was an old m an.

I have those days more than I care to admit. I have until Sunday to finish an afghan that I"m working on for the baby and I keep falling asleep when I try to work on it in the evenings. :rotfl:

Good morning. :)

I want to comment on all the pictures that were posted over the last day or so. I'm amazed at how much the kids are growing up. Tia, the DL pictures were beautiful.

Back to business as usual today. Hope you all have a great day!

I can't believe you're up and sounding so chipper after yesterday! You must be dog tired! I hope today goes well for you!

Marci (and then Glynis, too!) -- I think releasing the balloons is such a neat idea. I'm sure it could be very therapeutic, and yet still almost celebratory of the times together! :grouphug:

That's what I think, too. We did a similar thing at my niece's funeral. All 100 little children that were there released white and yellow balloons while singing "You are my sunshine." That was Carissa's favorite song. It was very helpful for the kids.

Thanks for taking care of Flat Stanley! My computer was missing when the teacher asked for addresses, so I had to just use my brain for people who I knew who might be willing, and usually have fun stuff planned! I hope he's not too much trouble!

We got Flat Stanley the other day. He needs to be dressed today as he will be going snow boarding tonight :cool1: I suspect that he will be bowling on Saturday and he may take a trip out to the sugar house too :goodvibes

I need to get my hair dried. I'm picking up Colby and Hunter at 10:15 for Hunter's doctors appointment. Hopefully he can answer all of my questions and concerns. I need to bring out all of the snowboarding stuff and have it laid out on all their beds for when they get home after school. They will need to snack dress and load up very quickly as we have a short window to get to the mountain. It is still cold here, but not nearly as bad as last week. They are still not predicting temps getting above freezing in the foreseeable future, but it is a bit warmer than last week.

I got an email from the ebay seller about my ski boots. She has shipped them via UPS (instead of USPS which she had in the listing :confused3 ) and she said it cost here $5 more. I was a bit taken aback as I'm not sure if she thinks I should give her another $5 or what :confused3 Anyone have this happen before. I would think it is her problem as I paid the shipping amount listed :confused3

It's definitely her problem, unless her listing said "Buyer pays actual shipping costs" or something along those lines. I get burned ALL the time by under-estimating shipping, and it's nobody's fault but mine.

Deb,
I don't know how you get out there & go snowboarding when it's so cold. I must be a wimp because I can barely handle the run from my house to the car!:rotfl2:

I knew he'd have fun with the Brooks clan! You guys are always doing fun things. Thanks for being willing.

I have admitted defeat and am making the statement that I am sick. I canceled my morning classes and went to get the drugs you have to sign away your first-born to buy. I hope they kick in so I can go teach my afternoon classes. I have already sent an email to my director that I won't be at rehearsal tonight. I am very sad because we are starting new music for the semester. :(

Robyn, Becky, Marci and Jen... I know you aren't feeling 100% either. I hope you feel better than I do! (I probably missed more sickies. Sorry about that.)

I would say it is her problem too!
I know I have underestimated shipping on something that I sold on ebay and I just had to eat it.

Glynis, we received Flat Stanley too. When is the actual due date on it? We will be in Disney TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY!!!
If you need him sooner, I am sure that we can still have fun with him here. Just not as much fun as at WDW!

Drive is highly overrated. ;)

Feel better, Elin!! pixiedust:

If she already shipped them then what's she going to do other than leave bad feedback? If she hasn't shipped them then she may hold them hostage unless you give her the $5. I don't see how she can really get away with changing the shipping terms after the auction is over and you have paid the invoice.
