DDA Chapter 13

We next headed to Hot Springs State Park. We couldn’t very well go all that way and not see the famous hot springs, right? There is a free bathhouse in the park as well as several commercial water slide places. There are boardwalks along beautiful terraces and plenty of places to explore. I did mention the brutal heat and sun, though, right? And the fact that the clock just kept on ticking off the minutes and hours? We would have loved to spend more time exploring if we could have done so without melting. No one had any desire to go soak in 104 degree water either. It was a fun place to spend a little time despite the sun and the heat and the time. I highly recommend the side trip to Thermopolis, the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, and Hot Springs State Park. If you head that way on a cooler day with more time to spend, though, you can do even more.

Guess what we found heading out of Thermopolis!
IMG_8398.jpg

Yeah! Girl (and the rest of us) finally had some ice cream!

Here is some of the beautiful scenery from our drive back towards Shoshoni. I have hundreds more, but I'm trying for a little moderation here.

As we approached the Grand Tetons, the skies turned greyer and it started raining.
IMG_8443.jpg

The drive was getting a little tricky on narrow roads that were under construction and in the diminishing light, so the rain wasn’t particularly welcomed. However, we were in the car and not getting wet, so the rain wasn’t really affecting our trip. Also, we were rewarded with this!

We had a little wait to get into the park, and the kids were getting antsy.
IMG_8481.jpg

A couple of them really needed a restroom, too! We finally arrived at Jackson Lake Lodge. I went to check in while Girl and SmallBoy made a restroom dash. Dh and Boy headed to the restrooms, too, but at a more laid back pace. The kids were all surprised that we had an actual key to our room. I guess keycards have been around at least as long as they have. I was worried about the room, because even though it was costing me a fortune, I had heard that the National Parks lodging wasn’t the best. This worry turned into a bit of a panic when we smelled pee outside our room (We eventually decided that it was really just some of the vegetation that had an unpleasant smell). Fortunately, the room was plenty big, clean, and comfortable (if a bit dated and dim…)

We headed back up to the main building to get some dinner. It was already past 8:00 pm. (Yes, dh, I do realize that’s 10:00 pm “our time”…he could be so picky about actually being fed, sheesh!) We didn’t have reservations for the Mural Room nor did we have the desire for a big, fancy meal. We went to the Pioneer Grill and enjoyed burgers, chili, and chicken fingers. It had been a long day, and we were all ready for bed.

Up Next: Who Stole the Mountains?

I am so excited. I went shopping last night and bought a built in dishwasher. For over 26 years we had had a Kitchenaid portable and it worked just perfect, but at the end, it was too much to fix so we got a Maytag portable.

I did not figure that Hal would ever want to put in more cabinets in our kitchen, so I did not figure we would need to look at built ins. Well, if he wants to install more cabinets who am I to argue? :lmao:

I got a Frigidaire that you can put things on the top rack and it knows if the correct button is pushed that it will only wash the top rack. Since it is only Hal and I, sometimes I just need to do a quick wash and now I will be able to do that. He is even going to do the plumbing and electric so in a week I will have cabinets and a dishwasher all on the opposite wall from our existing cabinets in my red kitchen!!! :yay:

Last weekend he installed the wood/laminate flooring and it looks really nice. So once the cabinets are in, I will be taking pictures. Now to just convince him he needs to take the existing cabinets and replace them too!!!!

Yeah for a new dishwasher AND more cabinets:woohoo: :woohoo:

Terry, that sounds like a very nifty dishwasher! Yay for more cabinets, too!

So on the airfare front today:
Our flights are back up to over $800 for the 2 of us. :scared1: I guess I am going to buy the ones I have on hold for $600 directly through AA.com, because the price on Orbitz is back up now. :headache:
I will keep watching and see if maybe the flight DS and I are on might become available for DH to switch to, otherwise DS and I will come home 3 hours before DH. He can try to go stand-by on our flight, but if we do resort airline check-in his suitcase will be on the 3 PM flight. Hmm. For an extra $10 I could check his bag under my name so all the bags would stay together. Maybe I will do that, so if he CAN get on the flight with us we won't be missing a bag when we get home. Very good. Problem solved. :thumbsup2

Elizabeth-your planning musings in the morning always make me smile...thanks!!

Beth-we loved Thermopolis when we spent the weekend there....I haven't really been to Grand Teton National Forest. Love the pictures!!:goodvibes

You find humor in this? I am not seeing anything particularly amusing, but I am glad it makes you smile! :rotfl2:

Beth - Your pics are beautiful, and I bet things are even more amazing in person! I am just not a "drive through the west" kind of girl, but I bet DH would like it.

:yay: That is a neat feature that you can wash just the top rack. I haven't seen that yet. We have started looking at dishwashers, because ours is leaking. We'd have a new dishwasher by now if I were doing the dishes by hand, but since dh is doing the dishes, I'm letting him drag his feet. Our current one is a Kitchen-Aid that appears to be from the 70's. I know that it looked far from new when we bought the house in 1990. It's worked wonderfully until now.

That is why we got rid of the 26 year old Kitchen-Aid, it started leaking and Hal had done enough fixing on it. It gave us a good run for the money.

Marci-I forgot to say that I hope Randy is able to fix your shower before your visitors arrive.

Thermopolis was so much fun! I know that I keep wishing that we had more time in so many places, but I really do wish we had more time to explore not only the park but also Thermopolis itself.

The Grand Tetons are another place that you'll "hear" me say that I wish we had more time. WOW! I'll probably have too many images for a single post again...

Thanks, Elizabeth. It was much more amazing in person. I wish that I were a better photographer. We saw a lot of vehicles from Texas on our journey. (Most of them were huge vehicles! I guess everything is bigger in Texas. :rotfl: )

Yes, our just isn't worth fixing at this point, and we can't complain about how long it's lasted.

I need to think about that top rack wash feature. Right now we'd never use it, but in another 10 years...

Yeah for your "new" kitchen!!!!

You were so close to that pot of gold!!!!

Yes we were. I have never seen a rainbow go all the way to the ground like that. That is something that was much more amazing in person! The photos aren't great, but I'm glad that they turned out at all. The only place to pull over wasn't great-looking either, but I mostly shot around the trucks and buildings as much as I could.

I really need to head out the door to this staff meeting. I am going to try to let everything that's said go in one ear and out the other. (Well, not the important things, but you know this director's way of wording things...)

Tammi,
Katie has an Ipod nano (the one with the screen). She asked for a docking/clock station for Christmas so Santa will be bringing that for her. Not sure what is the difference between that & MP3 though....sorry I can't be of more help.

Elizabeth,
Happy Birthday to DH!

Terry,
Congrats on the new dishwasher!

Beth,
Nice pictures.

Marci,
Hope things settle down home wise for you. :wizard:

Thanks for the well wishes, yes its been stressful to say the least. We have done alot of research on line & have some houses lined up that we want to see. I hope we can wrap things up & be moved by year end. We had a huge garage sale on the weekend. Sold alot of things that we just don't use or need which was good. I need to do another one or sell some stuff on Craig's list...we have a fairly new fridge & patio set that I would love to get rid of before the move.

Anne Marie - Don't you want a fridge for your garage? Maybe wait to get rid of it until you guys have chosen a house in NC. My mom had a garage fridge and it was very handy! Good for canned or bottled drinks, holiday leftovers, whatever wouldn't fit in the fridge in the kitchen.

I'm so happy for you. I hope he conceeds to the new cabinets all around. What a great feeling :cool1:

Great trip report Beth. Someday I would love to do a trip like that. Your report makes me realize that we will need tons of time to do it though.

Colby's home from school. I made a pot of hot chocolate and we are enjoying a cup with marshmellows. I seem to be losing my voice so I hoped that hot chocolate would help. In any event it is yummy. We have a beautiful, but chilly fall day. Looking out the window we can see all the pretty fall colors and with the cup of warm hot chocolate
