DDA Chapter 10

Most of the stores around here are having their school supply sales this week. Staples, Walgreens, CVS, Walmart. I didn't know if any of you are having the same sales or even need the supplies. We'll be hitting them later.

I hit walmart today. Notebooks for 5 cents!!! I bought 80 notebooks! I've got to go to Staples tomorrow and see what I can find, not to mention the others. It's really frustrating, though, since we don't know who our kids teacher's are, so we don't know what school supplies we need. So, I'm trying to just stock up on the basics; notebooks, pencils, crayons, markers, etc.

That infuriates me too. I realize that every single one of us, with rare exception, is here in this great country thanks to adventurous and brave ancestors who did not speak English and came here looking for a better life. But they learned to fit into this life they coveted. That is what you are supposed to do when you come to a new country to live. It saddens me. As I said the other night, my paternal grandfather, as well as both sets of Bob's grandparents, came here from other countries to make a new start. And one of the ways they made that new start was to learn the language.

When you adopt a new country, you should adopt the language. I don't want them to lose their language or their customs. As a matter of fact, I love learning about those from others. However, the United States is an English speaking country and needs to remain so. I feel that without a common language, we weaken our country.

Deb,
My kids school bags are packed & by the door. We hit Walmart last week when alot of stuff was 10-22 cents. I bought a tinkerbell packpack for Sophie on clearance in January for $2 & the lunch box for $1 so she is set. Katie has her Abercrombie tote from last year. Daniel's supplies are provided by his school (for a fee of course. ) so he is all set..I don't even want to think about school right now!!! When do your kids go back? Mine go back the Wednesday after Labor day.:sad1:

Elin,
Love your Mii!!!!

My kids start on August 18! That is so early! However, we have a full week off for Spring Break, and we are out for a long time at Christmas, too. Our last day of school is May 29th.

I have to say that I completely agree with this. One set of my great-grandparents came from Italy, and the other set from what was Yugoslavia. And they also did it LEGALLY. Ok, now I've got to get off of this soapbox before I put my foot in my mouth and offend someone.

You aren't offending me. Our country is based on laws. If we decide one law doesn't have to be followed, then which one is next?

I asked Kristin if she thought I had overstepped my boundaries too. She said, "No, but don't say any more." :rotfl2:

You have not overstepped your bounds. Hopefully, we are all past that by now. We all realize that we may have different opinions and that is ok. We only learn when we are willing to hear others sides (or the same as this is for me).

So here's a question from a small town girl. Around here the only language spoken is English. You rarely here another language, but if you do it is usually French or more likely Canadian French. All of our signs, etc are in English, no other translations. Is this only a Northeast thing?

We have only English signs. I don't hear anything other than English. There are some old Finnlanders around that speak that language.

Our portraits are online! :yay:

There is a slideshow and/or a link on the latest blog entry if you'd like to look at all the proofs (I think around 40?). Otherwise, here is just a sampling! :goodvibes

Same here, so I wait till after I register them to buy supplies. So looks like I will be hitting the stores once we return, I will register them both on the 18th.

If I could have some prayers/pd/good thoughts/or whatever you've got. I got a call today from the imaging center that did my mammo. I have to go back Wed. AM for a diagnostic mammo with and ultrasound, as they found an area that they are concerned about. I really don't have time for any issues. :sad2:

You've got it! As much pixie dust as you want, and unlimited prayers!

Here's hoping pixiedust: that it isn't anything serious.

I so agree with this statement. I work in healthcare and see numerous people that do not speak English. It is very hard sometimes to find a translator. Not sure which language I see the most of.

My parents bought a Wii today! Now I know what to get them for Christmas. Too bad they didn't get this 2 days ago. Bday shopping for my dad would have been easier!

Ya think?!! :rotfl:

I can't believe the photographer didn't delete these two...who would buy these images?!!!

Awesome pictures Jen!!! :goodvibes

A) I love that you named the pictures "bad and bad 2" :rotfl:
B) I don't think the second is bad! And the first is cute, but you're right -- I'm thinking I wouldn't spend money on such an action shot ;)

Thank you, and thanks for the JCPenney/Lifetouch vote of confidence. We loved it!

I have to tell you that we definitely noticed a shift at WDW this trip. English speaking people were clearly the minority. There were huge tour groups from Brazil, Argentina and even Mexico. I was also suprised that so many of the family units were not speaking english. I'm not even sure which language was most prevailent since I don't understand any of it, except for a little french and that wasn't it :confused3

I'm sure this is due to the declining value of the dollar, for many countries a vacation in the US is quite a bargain right now.

Tammi - Lots of PD :wizard: for you

Jennifer - Your pictures are beautiful

Elin - Glad you found a Wii fit!

Kristine - Sorry about all your troubles with the airlines, I'm almost afraid to look at ours again, so at what point can I insist on a refund?
