My 7 yr old swallowed a penny at school today, she says. The school called me and I went and checked on her and she seems fine. I called her pedicatrician's but the doc was not in and the nurse said to just let it pass unless she had pain or problems, then we would go to the ER. Has anyone had this to happen? I have made her eat prunes sinnce she has got home trying to move it quicker. Thanks!!!!!!!!!! :confused3

Oh, gosh- I think just about every kid swallows money at some point. My sis did on several occassions, and I swallowed a dime.

Take the nurse's advice. She'll be fine. ;)

If it was my dd, I'd go ahead and have her xrayed to make sure that it isn't stuck somewhere. It is better to err on the side of caution!!

Just keep and eye on her ( eating regularly , going regularly)

Give a push on her tummy and watch the reaction for a winching look.

I ate a few when I was younger and I turned out ok ( well medically anyhow)

I swallow a dime when I was a kid and it came out in the end.

I would just keep an eye on her and follow your doctors advice.

Thanks for the support! I just can't figure out what made her want to do that! I was just freaked out! :confused3

My older DS swallowed a marble & my youngest DS swallowed a penny.......you've just gotta watch for it to pass......the marble took a looong time to pass. I was worried & we ended up having him x-rayed after a week but it did finally pass after about 10 days. The penny was much quicker to pass.

If you find out, write the book and make LOADS of money! Millions of other parents are waiting for that answer!! :lmao:

the only child I know of that had a problem after swallowing a penny was much younger (3 I think). It lodged in her esophagus
When I was a teen the gril I was babysitting accidentaly swallowed a marble (her brother was throwing them at her,. When she yelled for me he threw one right in her mouth). I couldn't get in touch with the parents and called my mom. She called our family MD who said if it was small enough to go in, then it was sall enough to come out. Told us to give her mineral oil to help ease the process. I thought I would never get another babysitting job. The parents were wonderful and even paid me extra for the trouble and called to let me know as soon as the marble passed.

Thanks for you words! I guess I will just be on potty patrol this weekend. I sure hope everything comes out ok. (no pun, indeeded). Just worries me! :confused3

Ok Im going against the grain and not to frighten you but as a warning. Please do keep an eye on her if she develops ANY pain in her chest or stomach please take her in!

My DD swalowed a quarter and while water passed through just fine she somehow managed to get it caught at an odd angle is was almost diagonal in her esophogaus. We had her in the ER and they did XRyas they said it was incerdibly rare that it would happen but it did occassionaly they were just about to scope her when she said "Mommy it REALLY hurts!" then she got up and said " Im all better lets go home!"
:confused3

They did another Xray and sure enough it had passed through just fine.

Scared the crud out of me though!

So just be aware that it CAN happen but its rare. Know that if she is in any pain ( and I would think you would have known by now) to take her in.

This happened around 12 noon today and she has eaten a snack and dinner since then. Do you think it would already be in her stomach?

what goes in, must come out.. maybe it will turn into a quarter like when the magician's pull one out of your ear!!!

Seriously, I hope she's ok.... :grouphug:

Im not a doctor but I would think it should have gone down. Lunch and dinner would have been the major clue I think. If food can go through it should have gone down.

I hope I didnt scare you I just wanted to know that it can happen, like I said it is very rare ( and if it COULD happen it WOULD happen to one of mine LOL)
Good luck!!

Thanks for your honest advice. I could understand it better if she was 2 yrs old instead of 7 but anyway hopefully she will be okay. I appreciate the great people that is on this DIS board. DISer's are the best! :cool1:

We just went through this with my nephew and it was also a penny. A quarter, size wise would have been a problem. The penny it seems the problem lies in the make up of metal. The year it was minted makes a difference too! Pennies minted after 1982 are made almost entirely of zinc. This can cause stomach upset.

I would make sure you see it in a couple days in the stool if not head to the doctor. If your child has stomach pains that has to be checked too.
Good luck hope all ends well. :)

yeah Kaylee was 6

I asked her why she did that and she said she was laying on her back and playing with money and it "just fell in" yeah.... ok.....

Sounds like Carly's description, "I just accidently swallowed it"! Then I said, why would you have dirty money in your mouth anyway, "she didn't know". :confused3

My niece swallowed a quater when she was 6-6 she was jumping up and down and had it in her mouth and gulp down it went. It passed fine, but, man her Dad was not happy to have to make sure it did :lmao: (single Dad)

The 3 yr old I know that ended up in the hospital was throwing up. the parents didn't even know about the penny. they though she had a stomache virus. Eventually even liquids wouldn't go down because of swelling.
