She'll only be missing 2 days of school.. she's in first grade. Should I call the school ahead of time to tell them, or just call her in on those 2 mornings to the absence hotline?

I have always told the teacher in advance and asked how she likes to handle these planned absences.

Doesn't your school have a policy for absences for vacations or trips? Most schools require you to fill out a brief form telling where you are going at least a week or two in advance and then it is approved by the principal. This notifies the teacher in advance that she will be out those days. Or....are you saying you are just going to call and claim she is sick those days???

Hi! 1st grade teacher here :teacher:

Since it's only 2 days, I wouldn't make an extra effort to let the teacher know ahead of time. If you happen to see her, you could mention it...or just jot down a note & send it in, but 2 days is no big deal at all.

Have a great time!!

I think I'll just call her on in those mornings. I remember there being a long thread here recently about a mom whose child's absences were 'unexcused' because their school had a no vacations absence policy or something... and the kids' teacher actually told the mom AFTER the fact that she should have just called him in "sick" those days so he wouldn't have it against him on his record.

For a first grader, missing only two days, I would just call that morning and say "She's not coming in today". When I've called in sick for my DD in elementary school, they never even asked for a reason, and I NEVER volunteered a reason. I figured that I'm her mom and the reason for her absence was none of their business. ;;)

I've got that same attitude. :) I really think about homeschooling sometimes for a number of reasons, including the fact that I HATE that it feels that I have to answer to someone else about MY child.

Now, my kids generally miss a week for our Disney trip and I always send a note to each of their teachers letting them know when the kids will be out. I have never had a problem!

My older daughter is in Kindergarten and I told her teacher at the beginning of the school yr. Her teacher said her parents use to take her out for an annual trip too and she thought it was a good idea. She obviously didn't mind.

I'd tell the teacher ahead of time. I think it's a courtesy, even if it's not school policy. Your child will probably already have told her anyway, but hearing it from the parent is more considerate, IMHO.

And knowing me, I'd forget to call each day while on vacation. I forget to call in my child sick when he's home. Big no-no!

If you let the teacher know ahead of time, you might be able to do some of the missed assignments before returning to school. If you just call her in ,you will have two days of missed work to do when you get home. My son will be missing 4 days of school when we go to Disney in May. I am hoping his teacher will be accommadating and give us some work to do ahead of time. Hopefully, he will be able to get some reading done or maybe some worksheets done before our trip. Have a wonderful vacation!!!

In our school vacations have to be preapproved. You have to send in a note at least 2 weeks ahead of time.

I'm taking my daughter out of school next week for Disney. I told her teachers a couple of weeks ago about it. A couple of them are sending some ''lite'' work for her to do while she's gone.
She's 13 by the way.

I would let the teacher know ahead of time. I took my son out last year for a week (he was in kindergarten) for him to stay with his grandparents out of town so that his sorry, no good, biker trash parents (me!) could go to Daytona for Biketoberfest. :cool1: I let her know at the beginning of the school year, and she had no problem with it.
