My DD is in college and we are going to WDW the week of Thanksgiving. We are going to be there 8 nights but she will be there only 3 of the nights so we aren't adding her to our reservation. We are doing the DDP and don't want to add her because last year we ended up with a ton of extra wasted credits. We plan on eating at T-Rex one night she is there so we will have a few extra TS credits. Do you think they would allow us to use one of our extra credits even though she won't be on the plan? Our key card will show 4 adults but we would need 5 credits for our meal. Are they able to charge more meals than your key card shows? If we can't, it's not a big deal, we will just pay cash for her meals.

You will not be able to order more meals than you are showing available on your card. Also, since she will not have a room key, she will not be permitted to attend any EMH.

T rex is not on the DDP. IDK if you go to a TS if they will charge any more than the number on the card, Im doubting it. But I know they can at QS or else you can go up a second time to order the extra meal as long as you have left over credits.

This can be worked around, legally, though.

Assuming you meet room occupancy restrictions and are willing to pay an extra few dollars* per night she is there (it depends on resort level), you can add her once you get there for the nights she will be staying (which, you should technically do anyway). This will give her a KTTW card and allow her use of EMH and other onsite perks. It will not put her on the dining plan though, as that it set days before you arrive.

*(Note, this fee is something like $10/$15/$25 per night per adult over 2 in the room (real adult, not Disney "adult")).

I did this last year when Mom joined me for 4 of my 8 nights, and will be doing it again for 4 of my 9.

As far as the original question, the answer is no. Since she is not on the dining plan, you cannot use credits to purchase meals for her and they do check the number of meals allowed on the front of the card.

I know that T-Rex is not on the DDP which is why we will have 4 extra TS credits from that night that I was hoping we could use for her other 2 meals. I am not worried about CS meals because we can easily share. Last year, her BF joined us and because the 2 of them were only there 3 of the nights, we had so many extra CS credits and snacks, it was ridiculous. I ended up buying 2 large families lunch at Pecos Bill's. They were happy though! Oh well, maybe we will go without the DDP this trip and try some off site restaurants. We are DVC members and are staying at BLT so maybe I will just order in a night or two as well.

We are DVC members and are staying in a 2 bedroom so there is plenty of room and no extra charge. I will have to call MS in the morning and see if they have any suggestions. I was told by MS that I could add her to the reservation when we checked-in and she wouldn't be able to be on the DDP because with DVC you have to add the DDP 48 hours before check-in. So she will be on our reservation and will have a room key for EMH, she just won't be on the dining plan. We will most likely pay out of pocket for her 2 meals (1900 PF on Thanksgiving Day and Le Cellier lunch). It just seems silly to waste TS credits if I could use them for her 2 meals.

Per Disney's rules, you can't use your credits for her because she isn't on your dining plan.

There is no third adult charge on DVC reservations. You can register her and get her a key but as noted she will not be on the dining plan. If you have 4 adults on your key card, you can't order 5 adult meals and pay for the 5th meal with credits.

I always forget about DVC... maybe it's just inherent envy that I'll never be able to afford it :( (I need a raise, badly! Or I could rent points, but then I'd have to do that whole saving money first thingy instead of just enough to cover the deposit and making payments the rest of the time. Is it bad when my parenthetical expression is longer than the bulk of my post?)

That's what I figured but I thought I would ask anyway. It is definitely cheaper to pay for her 2 meals than it is to pay for the dining plan for 10 nights. Last time, we were able to use the extra TS credits by doing a couple of signature restaurants but we don't even come close to using the CS credits. As it is, we usually have extra CS and snacks when we are all there everyday.

I really love DVC. We bought several years ago and have never regretted it. We are a family of 6, although at the time we purchased, we were 5, and it is so nice to have the room to spread out and not have to get 2 separate rooms every trip. Hopefully sometime in the future you will be able to. Renting is a great way to experience DVC. That is how I got hooked into buying in the first place!

Cafeen..... You're the math whiz...
Price out buying DVC versus renting points. And I think your regret will slip away. (can take over 10 years just to break even).
