DD was STRUGGLING this weekend with her Latin homework. It was too many years ago that DH and I took Latin for us to be of much help to her. She is a very bright honors Freshman... she rarely struggles with school work. She is very frustrated and is asking me if she can drop the class. I really don't want her to so I need to find her some help.

She doesn't want to get extra help from the teacher because DD figures the teacher will just explain it again the same way and obviously that way isn't helping DD. As far as I know, this woman is the only Latin teacher at the high school. I don't think that DD needs a regular tutor.... just a few minutes of extra help right now. Are there any websites or such that she might find helpful??? I haven't found anything myself. Thanks in advance.........P

I didn't realize that schools today still taught Latin. I hope you are able to find help somewhere :goodvibes

Having a website for Latin help would be a great thing. My dd switched to Latin this year, as a sophomore after two years of French. It would be nice to have someplace to send her when she gets bogged down. Hopefully someone will have some thoughts.

I'll look and see if I can find some. What is giving her problems? I'm six hours shy of a degree in Classics - Latin, so I might be some help. It's been a long while, so I can't promise anything, but I still have my old texts.

When my son took HS French, he had to sign something pledging not to go online for any homework help. Make sure your D hasn't signed anything like that before she goes online.

What, really????

If you want to post her specific issue, I can ask my son. He is also in Freshman Latin, struggles a bit, but is doing okay so far. Maybe between the two of them, he knows something she didn't "get" and vice versa!:goodvibes

I took Latin my first semester of college and HATED it. I got a C in the class and was so disappointed.

OP- what book is she using? Wheelock's latin? I have a bunch of links that I will pass your way!

EDIT: Here are the links that I have from my old class. Not sure if any of them will be helpful but they're worth a shot.

http://wheelockslatin.com/ ---this is the link to the textbook we used.
http://www.quia.com/pages/wheelock.html ----quiz yourself
http://www.mnemosyne-proj.org/
http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/latin/wheelock/contents.htm ---I used this one the most
http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/decl.html ---Declension practice
http://web.utk.edu/~ehsuther/synop.html ---verb help
http://web.classics.ufl.edu/internet_resources.htm --my University's webpage for the Classics Department wtih a couple of links.

Hope this helps!

Really? Gosh, if it weren't for YouTube, there'd be a large chunk of Pre-Calc this year that my DD *still* wouldn't understand. I think the intent of this pledge must be to keep students from simply copying down answers to homework. Why would it matter *where* the student gets help (as long as they finally understand the concepts)?

My DD is in her 4th year of Latin, she LOVES it. This year they are translating Virgil's Aenid. Taking Latin has been one of the best things she ever decided to do at school. Actually, she had wanted to take Latin in 7th Grade but the school didn't let 7th graders take it, so she wasn't able to start until 8th. OP - I'll have my DD chime in on this thread when she gets home from school today, maybe she has some ideas.

Here's one idea I had - have your DD go to the ITunes Store and do a search for "Latin study help" or something similar. My DD has a Pod-subscription to Latin Study Buddy and to Latin Word of the Day.

What exactly is your DD struggling with, is it vocabulary or all those noun forms/verb tenses? (Also has she ever taken a foreign language before?)

agnes!

I did seven years of Latin and found it really helpful to have on hand books that contained the translations of the classic stuff - poems, letters, etc. I didn't use them later when I actually had to do full translations of these same poems and letters (little conflict with honor code, there ;)) but when I was stll learning the grammer and basic translation, it was helpful to see "real" examples.

I hope she will stick with it - Latin is such a good base for so many other languages, and makes English vocabulary a breeze. Plus, she will kick butt on her SAT verbals.

OP, I have no advice as to where to find help, but I hope you will find some good resources. My DS is a freshman in a HS where they require two years of Latin. He is doing fine with it, as it is a challenging course but we are fortunate enough that the teachers provide after school study tables and are there to provide support. Also, there are National Honor Society students available to tudor as well. Are there any upper grade Latin students that perhaps be willing to do something like that?
All I can say is to encourage your DD to stick with it, there are so many benefits to having Latin!
