Madison started on Friday....with 104.5....but within 24 hours it broke.
Today, Morgan woke up...puked....checked her temp...105.8! Gave her motrin through out the day. Just went to check her again.....106.2!!!

This time I gave her a "double" dose from a chart I have from the hospital.

How long do you think it should "kick in"....or do you think I should call her pediatrician??....Or wait til morning???

thanks
Lisa

i've always been taught that if temp was 101 or more to call doc asap.

Lisa, my suggestion would be to call now. Extremely high fevers can induce seizures.
I hope she feels better soon. :)

I know I may sound weird...but 105 fevers are not uncommon for her.....Think I will check her in about 1/2 hour and see if it goes down and then call.

Thanks.....will keep you posted

Just checked it, after a 1/2 hour and it is down to 104.4...

Wow!! My son never had a temperature over 104...it has never even gotten to 104 so I would definatly have paniced. I sure hope the meds do their job and it comes down soon!! I hope she feels much better really really soon.

I'd put her in a bath if it doesn't come down pretty quickly. I know some kids can run higher temps than normal but even if mine had 102 that didn't come down with a double dose I'd put them in the tub.

my doctor told me one time to rub down my child down with rubbing alcohol.

It is now down to 101.8.....so, I think she will be ok for the night...

Thanks again
Lisa

My husband had the flu last week and I nearly collapsed when I saw his 104.5 temperature. I called the dr immediately and she told me not to be concerned unless it spiked up that high from something lower OR if the temp lasted that high for 3 or 4 days without lowering.

I know children are probably more sensitive than adults, but I thought that info was interesting because I always believed a high temp like 104.5 could be damaging.

Lisa, when my daughter was younger she ran insanely high temperatures of 106 and higher. She did this with EVERY illness. It was freaky to see the Thermoscan (ear thermometer) read "outside the range of human temperatures". Her pediatrican did several tests and finally determined that she is just a kid who runs very high fevers when she runs a fever. As long as the temperature came DOWN with medication that was a sign that all would be okay. We had to do the tepid baths and the Motrin/Tylenol alternatively many times. She eventually outgrew the high fevers and now rarely runs a fever over 102.

Good luck, I hope your little one feels better soon!

Sounds like she's over the worst Lisa :)

bambii - I don't think rubbing alcohol is recommended any longer, it changes the temp too fast. Just lukewarm bath, not cold to the touch.

Hi.....Morgan's temp was "only" 102 an hour ago. Obviously, I am keeping her home again today.

Michelle...I know what you mean. The first time this happened with Morgan was when she was just 1 years old. The thermoscan said "out of range" and when I read the directions of what that meant....I really freaked out.....think by the time we got to the ER her temp was 106.5!! She is now 9 and runs these high temps periodically. Like you said.....when my kids run fevers.....they are very high.

Alot of people freak out when I tell them how high some of the kids temps have been. Guess I am used to it now.....I barely blink an eye at t 104 temp. Last night was a little scary, since it has been so long since she had over 106.

But hopefully the worse is over......

Thanks everyone.....

Lisa

Good to read Morgan is doing much better, Lisa. Those can be scary times with temps like that. :sunny:

I'm glad her fever is lower now, but I'm just wondering about the "double-dose" you are referring to.

You aren't giving her an extra dose of tylenol (or) motrin are you?

Are you giving her motrin AND tylenol at the same time? (which is okay)

Never double dose either of those, you could damage her liver.

Blondie....I have a chart from the hospital (from our many ER visits:rolleyes: ) It has a chart for Motrin (Ibuprofen) with 2 columns...one that says 102.5 and below and then 102.5 and above.

It is actually a "double dose" of just the motrin. I wouldn't do it unless it was high like last night.....in the 105 and 106's....since she usually carries high fever.

I know you shouldn't do it all the time....
Checked her fever at 8 and it was back up to 104. Just gave her the normal dose this time.

Going to run up and get some more tylenol though...I really don't like giving her all this motrin when she really isn't eating. She is drinking good....so that is a good sign.
