DD killed her fish

DD wanted a pet so I bought her a beta fish about a month ago. She loved Fred the fish. Last night she went to her grandma's to spend the weekend and took Fred since DH and I were going out of town. She changed his water last night and it was too hot and he died. She is sooooo sad. She cried for hours over Fred and was still close to tears this morning. She feels like she is a bad person because it was her fault. I have tried to reassure her that it was an accident and she is not a bad person at all.

How do you help them get over these things????

My DD killed her beta fish, Nemo at college last year. She called me up and just sobbed and sobbed. It didn't help that it was finals week and she was under a lot of stress.

You just have to keep reminding her that it really wasn't her fault and that Fred knows it. Keep telling her that she was a good mother to Fred.

DD bought another fish the first of May. He is thriving and loving the college apartment life.

Aw poor thing. I am sure Fred is in a happy fish pond in heaven.

I kill fish. Seriously, for some reason, I just cannot keep fish. I have one fish left, one of those bottom feeder types that could survive in a sewer if they needed to. I am surprised I haven't killed him too. I call him 'Mr Incredible', LOL.

Give her time to grieve; I'm sure she is very upset. (My DD once killed an entire aquarium by pouring milk in it, along with her leftover sandwich--"they looked hungry." ) Perhaps she will want to get a new betta.Or draw pictures of her old one. Whatever helps her get over the hump, ya know? Losing a cherished pet is one of life's toughest things.
