when I picked her up from school today she was in tears, having just received the letter. She is in 4th grade. I went to talk to the music teacher after school, she said 5 students had been kicked out (and already replaced) for excessive tardies. She said we signed a contract in the beginning of the year saying over 3 tardies and you are out. (Practice is at 7:15 am) So that was that. My husband takes dd to school, so I didn't know she had these tardies. I think it would have been a nice gesture if the teacher had warned these kids, ya know, 1 more tardy and your out or whatever, maybe in writing, so the parents knew as well that they were truly on the verge of being kicked out. Anyone go thru anything like this with their kids?

The one time when something like this happened with DD, I stormed the school demanding to know why we weren't warned and was embarrassed to learn that DD had been warned every single time, and chose not to tell me. When I confronted her, she admitted it. I am a lot more cautious about taking her word now, but I think she really learned her lesson about trying to hide things from me.

She was more than likely warned. Most teachers aren't in schools to torment children. Children have to learn to take their responsibilities seriously.

Could she have gotten verbal warnings on the days she came in late? Try to see it from the teacher's point of view...she shows up early and on time for this activity and probably does it without any extra compensation. My 12 year old had jazz band which meets 2 mornings/week at 7AM and one afternoon until 4:30. The teacher only gives one warning, which I really do understand because of all the extra time he puts in to make this activity available. :)

In any case, maybe if you call and are very contrite, she will reconsider. Blaming the whole thing on your husband might win you some points. :D Good luck!

oooh - I wouldn't want to be your husband tonight.

My 4th Graders "warning" can usually be found wadded up in a very tiny ball in the back corner of his desk.

Not like this, but I had a call from DS's Social Studies teacher today. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...just wait till he gets home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He'll be studying in his room ALL weekend! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

If he's anything like my boys, he won't have his social studies book! Good luck & kudos for staying on top of the situation (whatever it may be)

You have no idea how many times I've gone back to school to pick up 'the forgotten book'.

I doubt very much that she was not warned, and at 4th grade, do you really think a phone call to the parent about lateness was warranted? I would think that these kids must be dropped off early, without an early bus, so I'd think that the teacher figures, "well her parents drop her off, they KNOW she's late and they know the policy"

Though I'd be a bit upset with DH for not getting her there on time 5 times...

I also wonder how much your DD actually wanted to be in this program. I would think if DH was bringing one of my DD's to something late, and they risked getting booted, they'd complain to me about it....hence I would have fixed the situation back at 1 tardy.

Is your daughter the late one or your husband? My mom was always late getting us anywhere (in her defense she had 5 kids), which resulted in me sitting the bench and getting a scolding from the teacher/ coach/ band director many times. I feel bad for your daughter if it wasn't her fault.

My mom did the same thing to me momof2 (but she didn't have the excuse of having more than one child....she was just always late to everything.) It made me mad because I got detention at school every time I was late three times and the reason I was late was always her.

Oh I think I'd have to have a talk w/my husband... call the teacher and apologize and maybe if it was your dh who was late and not your dd she may reconsider.....
