DD Chipped Her Front Teeth In A Fall

When I picked DD up from daycare today there was an accident report from when she fell and busted her lip. She has a pretty big lip but I didn't examine any further. Tonight while changing her diaper I noticed that something just didn't look right. I looked a little closer and I saw that she had big chips in her two front teeth and one of the teeth is really sharp and jagged on the bottom. It must have happened when she fell earlier today.

I guess I should take her to a dentist soon but does anyone know what we can expect? I know they are just her baby teeth but it still can't be good to chip your teeth like that.

How old is she? I see you say in pampers....so I'm assuming under 2?

If you take her to the Dentist he/she will probabally check for any movement. If she's good, they may even try for an x-ray. (If you're not pregnant, she may be able to sit on your lap)

At this point though, she will probabally be put on a soft diet, and watched. When she gets older they may put a little bonding on them (if they drive you crazy)

Depending on the dentist they may try to smooth out the rough part. Some won't do that though. I've worked for many and they all have their little quirks.

OMG..I hope she'll be alright. I am afraid DS is going to do this one of these days the way he runs about and knocks into things. He's got a little bit of a bruise on his forehead from running face-on into the sideplate (the little tray thing) on the lefthand side of the grill yesterday.

My DD chipped her front teeth and as long as its just a chip, it should be fine. The dentist just took an x-ray and then watched it to make sure it didn't turn dark. She lost it when she was about 6 and her new teeth were great!!

She is 13 months old. I can't imagine her sitting still for a dentist but I guess I could be shocked. She was not overly thrilled with me checking her teeth. I really just hope that no permanent damage has been done.

My DD chipped her front tooth when she was 11. Because this was already an adult tooth the put a fake part at the bottom of it. You can hardly tell where the fake part is now. DD did this riding down a huge hill on her bike.

Well I would say do not be surprised if there is some swelling tomorrow around her face. My daughter had a bad fall on a play structure and hit her teeth and her entire face was swollen the next day. The teeth were loose but the dentist did not do anything which in my extensive experience with dentists and primary teeth is standard unless the teeth are hanging out.
I have personally dropped my laptop on my face, LONG STORY and chiped one of my teeth in half. The dentist was able to in about 10 minutes use some ceramic bonding and heat tool and fix the tooth as good as new, depending how much area your dentist has to work with this may be an option for your daughter. I am a total freak about going to the dentist and this was a painless, noise free, non annoying process. I still took two ativan and a couple valium to get in the door but I didn't freak out which I usually do. I hate the dentists more then anything. I would really rather have surgery honestly.
Good luck to your daughter but honestly it doesn't sound like much can be done except maybe cosmetic.

My DD (19 months) chipped her front tooth when we were at WDW last September (she was 14 months old). DH was giving her a bath on our last night of vacation and was letting her stand in the tub . She slipped and hit her month against the side of the tub. At first we thought that she had just hit her mouth, but when she let me look more closely through the swelling, I noticed the chip tooth. Well, you can only imagine the earful that DH heard from me that night! I was adamant that we were going to take her to a pediatric dentist as soon as we got home and have them do "something" so I wouldn't be reminded of his careless parenting everytime DD smiled for the next five years!

We ended up talking with a family friend who is a dentist about the chip. DD's chip wasn't horrible and she said it would probably traumatize DD about the dentist more than anything else so we didn't do anything about it (but the tooth wasn't loose or anything...that might have changed our decision). To be quite honest, I hardly notice it anymore, but at the time it happened, I thought that I would spend the next 5 years obsessing over it.

You might just want to have your DD's pediatrician take a quick look at it before subjecting her to a dentist visit. In addition to our family friend, I had our ped. look at it during her next visit and she concurred with the family friend.

My 6 yr old chipped his two front teeth when he was about a year old. He was walking and drinking out of his sippy cup and fell.
I took him to the denist and they were chipped but luckily not to badly injured so he didnt need anything done.
I would take her in just so they can see the jagged edges you were talking about. they may need to file that part down so its smooth.

** Update **

The pediatric dentist can get her in tomorrow afternoon. I was really hoping they could get her in today but I guess it will have to wait.

This morning her lip was pretty swollen and when she would try to chew on a toy she would fuss and pull it away. Her teeth could be hurting her or it could just be her swollen lip is hurting. Either way I predict a bit of a rough day for her. She has really been chewing on stuff lately because she is trying to cut a few more teeth. Poor thing....I just feel so bad for her. And to top it off of course she is getting her 1 year old pictures taken on Saturday.

My dd fell and got a fat lip when she was about 2 1/2. The tooth bled but didn't have a chip so I didn't take her in. It started to turn a yellow color before it fell out when she was 6-ish. The permanent has s ome discoloration to it due to the "trauma." Perhaps if I'd taken her in it would have been fixed. I'm glad you're taking her in. Better safe than sorry.

Awww, Becka. Your daughter has had a rough time lately, with the TP incident, and now this, hasn't she?

Poor baby.

As for the tooth, I agree with getting her to a pediatric dentist. Our son did a similar thing when he was that age. He didn't chip it, but one day we noticed that his front upper incisor had turned dark gray. The dentist said that he must have fallen and smashed his tooth, which then "hemorraged", and the blood in the tooth turned it dark. He did not do anything with the tooth, and just said that it would probably fall out as usual later. And it did.

I wouldn't trade my kids for the world but some days especially lately I just can't quite believe what I have gotten myself into. Who decided I was adult enough and mature enough to guide two kids into being mature, responsible adults? Most days I just feel lost and I feel like I am parenting by the seat of my pants....
