I can't even have it!! What's up with that??
I never really tell them what I want for my birthday.. I usually tell them not to even bother.. The one time I DO tell them what I want, they go and say I can't have it..

All I asked for was..............................................

An enclosed Amish buggy and a horse!!

Now really - is that asking too much? Their back yard is plenty big enough for them to keep a horse back there.. The "kinner" could take care of him.. I'd save loads of money on car insurance; gas; registration; I wouldn't have to renew my drivers license.. What's with these people??

Spoiled! That's what they are.. Just plain spoiled.. All caught up in this modern stuff.. They wouldn't even have to go that far to GET the buggy.. On my way to another town yesterday I spotted a big barn called "The Blue Hen" - that sells Amish furniture - and right there on the front lawn was my gorgeous, shiny, black enclosed buggy! :lovestruc

Now I'm going to have to tell them to buy me something dumb like a few Amish documentary videos and books..

I can never have ANYTHING I want!! :sad1: (sob..choke..sniffle..)

Okay - maybe I'm getting a "little" carried away with this Amish stuff..:rotfl:

But gee - don't ask me what I want and then tell me I can't have it.. That's downright cruel! :headache:

Gee, what's wrong with them??? It's not like getting an Amish Buggy as a birthday present is odd or anything.:rotfl2::rotfl2:

WOW!

the nerve of some people.

I hope they come to their senses.

Maybe you could help out with the "clunkers for buggies" program.

That's certainly not fair...I'm sure the Amish don't even have to wait until it's their birthday to have a new buggy. I personally like the ones that are more like a little truck. They have a little flat bed in the back.

I'm sure it happens all the time in Lancaster County, PA.. So what if we don't happen to live there? I could start my own Amish community.. They're probably afraid I'm gonna start wanting goats; shopping around for a wood stove for their kitchen; have the electric turned off and replace it with kerosene lanterns; etc.. I'm tellin' ya - they're spoiled.. No getting around it..

Yeah - well wait until this winter when the power goes out again for a few days and they start begging to use the nice warm quilts I plan on making.. Hmpf! We'll see about THAT! Bet they'll be thinking Amish isn't so bad after all..:snooty:

Say, goats make good watchdogs AND they mow the lawn for free!

Ah ha! I forgot all about the "mowing the lawn" argument.. That could work to my advantage.. Hmmm..:rolleyes1

Maybe you could start small like asking for the outfit. Then when Christmas comes along you can tell them that the buggy would really compliment the outfit. Sort of like a really good pocketbook. I mean, once the get a look at you in the black dress and white hat how can they deny you the buggy? They simply will not be able to resist!:cutie:

You can get a cheap buggy and then maybe put it out on "Pimp my Buggy"

....spinners on the buggy...chrome..it could happen.

:rotfl:Thank you, I needed this thread today! :rotfl:

Maybe if you talk them into the goats, you could then start small with a goat cart and work your way up to the horse and buggy?

this thread reminds me of when we were in Vermont in March, we saw a Llama farm and we started a whole joke about how my husband and I were going to retire to Vermont and open a B and B and raise some llamas.

Me: I fed the Llama's yesterday, it's your turn!

DH: This whole crunchy granola lifestyle choice was yours. You go feed the Llamas.

Me: But they smell and Drooly tried to bite me yesterday... :guilty: lol

Little OT, but DH and I were watching a show on the Amish not that long ago. Did you know that at age 16 they are allowed to pretty much go do whatever they want? They can buy / drive a car, wear normal clothing, do drugs and the Amish community turns a blind eye because that is their time to decide if they want to be in the community or not. Some of these kids were doing and dealing meth, and were really messed up. Most of them went back to their Amish comminuties after a few months to years of living like this. What choice do they have? They have no education (home schooled only till 8th grade) and if they are to leave, their families would cut them off for everything). Personally, it really put a black eye on the Amish for me.

Please tell me that you are the one who posted about an Amish book, I want to order for my friend's birthday and could not find it!! Do you know a name?
Happy Birthday!!

Wow they are really ungrateful brats. It's not like you asked for another grandchild.

Interesting take on it.

The fact that some (not all) Amish kids can have a rumspringa actually makes me feel better about the Amish way, since it allows teens to experience life among the 'english'. This lets them make a more informed decision about whether they want to continue to be Amish.

It should also be noted that while it is true that their deviations from Amish norms are not as severaly condemned during rumspringa, they are not technically released from Ordnung.

I'm just stating what this show said, I'm by no means an expert. Personally, though, it seemed sad to me. Everyone from the elders who had gone back to the Amish way, to the teenagers that were in their rumspringa and contimplating what to do, it seemed like they all wished they could have had a different life, a more "English" life. And with only an 8th grade education, and the knowledge that they would be alone if they decided to leave, its not much of a decision to me. Granted, they did show one or two that did leave, and seemed to be doing OK on their own (though most of the ones who left the Amish way where still living with Amish, just not their own family and just not following the Amish ways).
