DCL shows that they CAN cancel cruises for no reason - Wonder's 12/9/12 and on

Well, there goes my family's New Year's cruise 12/30/12. ARGH We were so excited to go. Trying to fit vacation around everyone's school schedules is a nightmare and I was so happy we could just drive down to L.A. to get on the ship (airfare added almost $3000 to our last cruise!). We'll rebook something, but no idea what right now.. the Western Caribbean cruise that interests me is double just for *one* stateroom and doesn't include airfare, of course.

Well now that my head has cooled off let me offer this thought. I have noticed that no one here has mentioned something very importaint. If they were to leave before Jan 1 of 2013 they would be in violation of there contract with the Port of Los Angeles. Violating that contract would not be their best interest. First it would probably cost them a lot of money to break the contract, and two, if they did break the contract they probably would not be welcome back. That would make it harder to come back and offer more Hawaii cruises and do forth. Also maybe they are reworking the ports of call to make it more appealing. So I am just throwing this out there as food for thought.

I hope they stay in the west coast.
My wife and I always wanted to cruise but it wasn't until we found out about the Wonder on the west coast that we could.

Next month we're going on our first Disney cruise, we were hoping to make a tradition out of it.

Oh well. We'll just continue our yearly Disneyland vacations.

Aloha, We are right there with you! We never thought we could afford to cruise with Disney because of the airfare to Florida. We were able to do the west coast repo and the Inaugral Alaska back to back this year! We loved it so much we want to cruise with Disney again soon. If they leave the West Coast it probably won't work for us either!! I hope they rethink this one Karen and Ron

Without seeing the actual contract between the Port and DCL who's to say what the cost would be and what the 'outs' DCL has had built into it. I assume most cruise companies always try to give themselves an out just in case. And since we don't know what is planned for 2013 who knows - they may very well be back in the summer and run a handful of dates out of LA.

Shame really since we have been looking at it as a way to visit the West Coast.

Agreed! I have one Carribean trip to take a cruise on one of the new ships but I had planned on that being one of very few trips that I had to fly across the country for. I had hoped to eventually do Alaska, Hawaii, the Pacific Coast MR again and maybe some shorter west coastal cruises over the next few years. So bummed now.

Yes, the Wonder is showing in Grand Cayman weekly starting 12/19. Looks like a Panama Canal crossing on 12/9 and the doing Western Caribbean. Interesting. What home port will she use? You have to assume that like other lines, DCL found that even if the ships sailed full, they were not getting the revenues on board that they needed. Kids sail free promos have to hurt in the long run. as well as people not booking shore excursions through DCL. A lot of factors go into the bottom line, and the bottom line is always number one.

Yikes, I just thought about airfare.

I guess most people haven't purchased it that far out. I do so I hope DCL doesn't cancel my cruise.

At the earliest, flights can be booked 330 days in advance, so nobody on those cruises is locked into airfare. I would imagine that's one reason the cancellations are happening now vs. next month.

Since the 12/2/2012 cruise is the one that passengers from the cancelled cruise are being rebooked on if they don't make other arrangements, I think that would be unlikely.

I just talked to a very good friend of mine who works for DCL. I won't go into what my friend does, but I will say this. It looks like DCL has picked up the options they hold for 2013 and 2014 in Los Angeles. My friend was very quick to point out it is not confirmed, but that's what all signs are pointing to. I say let's play out the waiting game and see what happenes. Also in terms of the contract, trust me when I say DCL will not only lose a lot of money but good will if they leave before Jan '13. That's not to say they won't leave, but it could cost them more than a canal toll.

who knows what they are planning being the problems in Mexico...we have a cruise booked in March for the Mexican Riviera....and still deciding if we want to get off the ship....we are thinking in Cabo yes but PV not so sure...and we will not be stopping at Mazatlan
