In 2004, my ds went on the teen Wild Side excursion. While doing the kayak portion of this, the CM's told the kids that sharks do indeed circle CC (thank goodness for the nets !). They told them that a big tiger shark had been spotted fairly recently. I recall my ds telling me it was close to 15 ft (as per the CM's).

K - now THAT scares me - I am already re-thinking going in the water at CC now!! :sad2:

The family beach side of CC has nets to protect cruisers who swim in the water from some of the larger marine creatures out there. Only small fish can fit through. It's safe. I don't think anything really harmful could get past the nets. I don't believe the adult side has these nets though ? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. My son said the teen side of the beach also has nets. When he was on the Wild Side excursion, some of the counselors were pointing out areas that were not safe to swim. My ds can't recall exactly where this was, but it was away from the family beach near a reef. His memory is a little fuzzy---this was in Nov '04.
But I didn't mean to alarm anyone....the family beach is perfectly safe (as far as big fish) goes. Please don't deny yourself and family from swimming there. I was just commenting that this is the Carribbean----sharks do love the warm waters in this part of the world.

Well I thought that since i did this excursion earlier this year i should tell you all! Ok where we went kayaking they did warn us about the sharks and we did see baby ones but nothing large. Where we went kayaking was on the other side of the island, past the adult beach. ALSO over at the teen beach there were A TON of jellyfish! Just thought that i would add that! Oh yeah i forgot we also saw baby swordfish at the snorkeling area!

what cruise was this taken on it looks like the same weather I had on castaway cay when I went.

Don't forget where CC lies. This island is in shark infested waters. If you swim in these waters, you may see a shark of some size. Having said that, Disney has protected CC's family beach with adequate netting and rock to keep out the larger fish and sharks. Thats not to say that smaller fish and small shark are kept out. A CM told me on our last cruise that Disney is very sensitive to the protection of their guests and go out of their way to keep their swimming areas shark free. He told me that there has been numerous shark siteings on the audult beach side of the island and that the CM's have been well informed about swimming on the beach near their housing location. He also said, knock on wood, there has not been a shark attack that he knew of, since Disney started sailing to CC. They have CM's that actually keep an eye out for shark on the beaches and the boat patrol does the same. Everyone should feel safe swimming or snorkelling at CC. The adult beach snorkelling is netted also, but not as securely. When I was snorkelling there on my last cruise, I snorkelled along the net. This area is more at risk because it is out in open water. For those of you that have snorkelled at the adult beach, you may have noticed the Barracuda. They can be very aggressive fish and have large teeth. It is recommended that you do not wear any jewelry while swimming and also always swim in a group or pair. This will decrease the risk of an attack or bite. Disney can only protect their guests to the best of their ability. Remember this island is out in the middle of the Caribbean. And nature will be nature. Enjoy the beauty that CC has to offer. It is a very unique piece of property. Enjoy your vacation, relax and stop worrying about things. Worrying is what we do at home. May you all have safe and fun filled trips. :sunny:

We saw a 4 foot long grouper while snorkeling @ the family beach last Nov. It was right next to one of the lifeguard stands. Let me say that he had some huge teeth!

wow that is absolutely amazing! now my big question is umm where did you catch these big guys...:/

the guide took us out to the right of the island and out away from the island about 10 minutes.

i would not worry about swimming at CC - even barracuta will leave you alone if you do not "shine or wave" - no jewelry or material/plastic flapping! but this is true no matter where you snorkle. Life is too short to worry! just be alert at all time, remember the rules and most of all enjoy yourself! :cool1:

Adult beach has a netted area? a separate snorkeling area? I thought it was all open and all the same. What did I miss?

So do they always do this on the night you book for Palo's? My DW and I are going to be having our 3rd anniversary that week and we're going to Palo's on our actual anniversary  and this would be something WONDERFUL to surprise DW!

Nope....the flowers are part of a romance package you buy. The package includes a Palo dinner and they do the flower petals in your room on the night you eat at Palo.

This was a part of the Romantic Escape at Sea (REAS) package we purchased. As part of the package, you received the "Romantic Turndown" service the night of your Palo reservation, and then you were able to order a special champagne breakfast one morning. The difference for the breakfast was that you could order hot items, as well as 2 champagnes or champagne mixed with orange juice (can't think of the drink name right now). It really was a lot of fun!

Are those young palm trees planted on the beach?
What island? Which itinerary?
