Great shot Aisling!

Keep em coming Lady~

I agree...digital SLR's are amazing, IF you know how to use them, or are willing to learn, otherwise it's a waste of money! I have a Canon Rebel and absolutely love it! The only downfall is that it is SO big and bulky and a pain to lug around. I will definitely take it on our cruise next April, however, I am currently looking at Canon Powershots, a small camera that I can have with me all the time. My co-worker has one and it takes amazing pictures for something that is basically the size of a driver's licence!

My friend Nan, the one all the way to the right in Aisling's last post, has a Canon and has used my Nikon.

Nan says the Canon *is* rather cumbersome,
that's why she didn't bring it with her to DL.

She grabbed my Nikon alot at Disneyland to take some shots during the day.
Nan said the Nikon was alot lighter.

IOW, when checking them out, don't just do internet searches-
Put one in your hand! See how it feels before you buy~

There are two other reasons I prefer the DSLR...
I have examples posted below~

One would be there is no delay!

Dale was alot further away from me when I hit the button! I still got my picture but this shot is a little too close for my liking.

Second would be my P&S's inability to focus.

It was very unpredictable when my Olympus would focus properly or even when the flash was set properly.

I lost alot of one time opportunities because my flash was obnoxiously bright or the camera didn't focus on the subject.

I highly recommend you make the switch!

The photos I post here were taken with an Olympus point and shoot, my boss has since bought a Nikon D50 for the store I work for and has allowed me to use it when I vacation. If you've used SLRs you know the quality that can come out of them. The DSLR is awesome!

I've had my Rebel XT for about a year now. I've got the "thrifty fifty" a 50mm prime lens that really cheap, but takes really sharp pictures, and is very fast. I also have a 28 - 135mm IS lens that I love as well.

We're cruising in December, and I've reserved a 10-22mm Super Wide Angle lens for the indoor shots, and a 300mm IS prime as well for the outdoor shots. It will be a pain lugging it all around, and I probably won't take all 4 lenses everywhere, but the pictures we'll have to remember our vacation will make it worth it.

As for answering any questions about switching, I never try to answer those, I always refer people to the pros and cons of a DSLR compared to a P&S. A person who doesn't want to take the time to learn how to use a DSLR has probably just wasted a lot of money when a $200 P&S would take better pictures in their hands.

My advice is for Tiggerking specifically...

Most family photographers would do just fine with a P&S of their liking ::yes::

They are GREAT cameras, and nowadays can take great photos in any situation.

~Great photography comes from the eye first and the camera second~

SLR's is how I began, and as it sounds, is how Tiggerking used to take pictures.

I would go back to my manual Minolta SLR over any camera in a heartbeat if it had the picture preview a digital camera offers.

Oh, I didn't mean that you or anyone else shouldn't share your thoughts and opinions, only that I don't. ;)

Ok here is my new photo for this thread.... Might not be a purdy and well framed as others, but I have waiting 480 days to take this shot!

This was taken at 2 am CST today :-)

Now I only have 105 more days until I cruise!

It's Cool :hippie:

I am glad you said that,

I wouldn't want to steer someone in the wrong direction regarding cameras...digitals are great inventions, DSLR's are serious cameras-you gotta want to carry one to enjoy using one, really.

I watched my co-cruiser Grimgrinnin use his Nikon our entire cruise and tried not to drool all over it. The pictures that came out of that camera were impressive, it really helped that he was and is avid about his photography. I too was flip-flopping about the expense, my boss totally saved me from having to make that decision by buying one for me to use at work. Now I take it everywhere~

I know, it was hillarious.

Since it's almost a new day, I'll post my next one now...

I am getting more and more convinced. I actually have a good friend who is going to help me with the ultimate test. He has a Canon digital SLR, and we are going out soon to shoot the same shots head to head with his DSLR and my X-700. I am sure that I will go digital very soon, but I know that I will never get completely away from my film cameras!
