DCL Picketers

BD - isn't it just awful how I get! Thanks for keeping me grounded - what a stupid thing to get upset about!!!
People can be as CHEAP or as GENEROUS as they desire and I have to remember that each one is entitled to his/her own opinion......

Ohhh, by the way, I definitely will send you a copy of my Sanity Statement - as for the blind part....... well.....it isn't much proof to show you my Driver's License after you know how I tried to improve the decor of the Indy Airport!!!!

Rae

Rae sweetie I will vouch for your sanity!

I'm still a little confused about how you are tipping the folks at topsiders. Which I think is a very gracious thing to do. You mentioned leaving it at the corner of your plate. Does it go to whoever busses your plate or do you designate it for someone. Sorry to be so dense.

Hi kid!
How are you doing?!!! Great to see you posting! How's the family?! Love to them! Thanks for vouching for me - always can use that on my Sanity Statement!

Each CM is designated a certain area - and I just leave a few dollars at the corner of my plate so whomever is clearing the area can have it.

I figured it out, if I choose to give say between $3 and $5 for the meal (breakfast or lunch) - that works out to an extra $6 - 10 a day, or $42 to 70 per week for these "special and extra" tips.

And you know, that doesn't even sound generous or extravagant to me now that I see it in print. Maybe I'll up it next time around!

Take care!

Rae

She is a kind and generous soul (infact I can picture you living in a huge mansion like in gone with the wind except you love everyone and want to help them all)
I think is is SO wonderfull that Rae is able to be so generous and don't understand why anyone would have a problem with that. I am somewhat of a big tipper myself- have not tipped all the folks she has but is she feels willing and is financially able I for one can't understand why anyone would begrudge her.
I for one love you Rae.. I say if you are able "you go girl!!"

If you had to clean all these bathrooms, you wouldn't call this a mansion - it's more of a WOmansion! I swear we were better off when we just had one - the outdoor kind!

Thanks, Ann, for vouching for my sanity - but please remember I'm the one who tried to readjust the clearance bar at the Indy airport! HAHAHAH!

Take care and "be all you can be"!

Rae

My dear Rae, not only will I vouch for your sanity but I want to come work for you:teeth: you can pay me in crab though I know there will be no shrimp left and I like crab too!

For you, Ann - there will always be shrimp!
The good stuff too!

Rae

But you have to clean all the bathrooms.......maybe you should hold out a little....

Rae

So what is this I hear, We are relocating to Indiana and we are going to work for Rae.

Ann, you can work for shrimp and I will work for cruise.

:D

That party missed out on excellent service and great humor. I felt terrible for Roland and Joseph. Wonderful team.

We had Roland and Joseph as our servers on our Jan 25th cruise. They were so fun! They got the recommended tip and then some from us and our tablemates.

I miss them!

I'd like to give another perspective on the whole tipping thing. This trip is a big stretch for us financially. My dad is paying for part because he wanted to make sure the whole family could go (all the 7 siblings and their spouse/kids). This is our first cruise ever (well except for the big grey boat my dh used to ride on . . .LOL).

My dh was shocked when I told him we needed $175 to pay tips at the end of the cruise (we have us and two kids). For the amount of money we're paying for this trip, we wish they would pay their people well enough see we weren't obligated to give tips.

Mind you, I've been in the restaurant business and know the value of tipping. I'd probably give them something anyway, but we were unprepared for the expectation.

Please don't judge people because they don't tip. If it weren't for you folks, I wouldn't have known either. Some folks are stretching just to get on the boat :)

Have a wonderful evening. . . only 13 more days until we begin the land portion of this adventure!

If this is a comment on anything I wrote, I never judged those who didn't tip - I was replying to specific comments made by a writer because I chose to tip others who were not in the guidelines as "individuals to tip".

Along the same line, please don't judge those of us who do tip generously and frequently. Especially when some will walk around with a $4.95 Mamosa or $35.00 soda refill cup and complain that they don't think it's fair to tip the servers for their child or a missing meal.
Servers get stiffed enough, so if I and others want to use our money for tips and not say "bingo cards, booze or souveniers" then so be it.

DiaLady - I try and make it a mission of mine not to judge anyone. I was in the same position as you as my last cruise was my first - I found out from my DBF (who had cruised plenty in the past) that it is taken for granted, on most cruiseliners, that you will tip your servers at the end of the cruise. There are some Cruise companies that now include this in the price. Most travel agents do let you know this when you book a cruise and yours should have done the same especially if you're a first timer.

That said even if I hadn't been told - every lead passenger is sent the cruise documents and in those documents it clearly states what you "should" tip at the end of the cruise, so I would find it hard to believe that people didn't "know" about it IMHO.

I try and remember that ALL my food is included if I plan to eat on the boat and at Castaway Cay. I know the price of a cruise is more than my usual 3/4/7-night room only vacations at WDW but at least when I'm cruising I don't have to budget how much money to take for the food or indeed the tip I usually leave at the end of every sit down dinner I have when I'm on land.

I've just added up all the tips that we left at all the restaurants in WDW before we went on the cruise and I can tell you that was a pretty penny too but that's how it is unless you get service that you regard to be poor.

And if people want to tip more because they feel they've had great service or because they can - then heck that's just great for all these servers - some of whom are sending money back to ALL their extended families from across the globe.

We plan our cruises at least 1 year out. Then we start saving all our change and put it aside. Since March we have already saved $80.00. We should have plenty plus a little extra spending money. It can really add up.

Sam I have to agree on every cruise I have ever taken the info back they send about 60 days in advance cover the tipping quidelines. There have been times when I tipped more depending on the service I received.

Has anyone used $1.00 coins as an extra tip? Just a thought...What do you think..for things like porters...a server that goes the extra step...just something you can keep in your pocket and if service is great...or even if its just something someone does well...like I said -just a thought...

However the people thought that they were giving them quarters. So I don't know how it would go over. It does seem like a good idea . Maybe somebody else will have more info for you.

Hi jlp651.

Has anyone used $1.00 coins as an extra tip?

I don't think that's a silly idea. Stupid, yes. Silly, no.

JUST JOKING EVERYONE.GEEZ, HOLD ON WHILE I PUT ON (AGAIN) MY FLAME RESISTANT SUIT!!!

Actually jlp651, I am only hesitant as it might later be spent by the recipient as a quarter...

I am truely surprised that you did not know about the tips, didn't your travel agent explain that? Port charges are not part of your package quote or taxes or transportation or insurance either. Most travel agents explain that right up front.
If Disney had to compensate their staff the amount of money that the tips generate the cruise would be MUCH more than an extra 175.00. They would average out for everyone so you would pay the same tip price as a family of five would. If you have worked in the restaurant business why would you be shocked that you would be expected to tip your servers? It does not make sence to me? Not trying to judge you just trying to understand.

Ann Morin,

Ditto on your post. There is a ton of info in the DCL brochure and literature regarding what is/is not included in the actual cruise rate.

Ignorance is no excuse where tipping is concerned. Whenever I'm in doubt about whether someone should be tipped (in any service industry) I always err on the side of "Give them a tip". I am not wealthy by any means but tipping is considered normal in the travel industry. You leave tips for restaurant servers, hotel bellmen, limo drivers, housekeeping, don't you? Why would a cruise staff be any different?

Just mho:o
