DCL News update

No flame here --that is part of what is wrong with our society--everyone feels entitled and wants to do as they please. I'm glad to see the rules enforced and say it is about time.

I agree no jeans and shorts.. But khakis and Polo shirts are the way to go.. Thats my decision and I am sticking to it.
and thats what I will be wearing in 2 weeks. If someone comes in shorts and Jeans no biggie to me, I will not let something to trivial bother me or ruin my vacation (as someone said ruined). There are more important things in the world to be upset over.

My 2 cents for what it is worth.

I agree with TiggerKing completely. The way you dress affects those around you. If I'm dressed up for a nice meal and the people next to me are in jeans or dressed inappropriately, my experience is diminished and I'm the one following the rules. If you never make an effort to make something really special, how do you distinguish one experience from another.

The "my husband/boyfriend doesn't want to get dressed up on vacation" excuse is lame.

I agree. However, NOT having a formal/semi-formal night definitely makes packing easier!

I can see both sides of the dress code issue. On the one hand, my husband and I like to dress up on the ship because we rarely do it at home. Wearing a dress for me and shirt and tie for him makes it feel more "special." But I know some people feel that they are on vacation and want to be casual, so I don't let that spoil my cruise.
I must say the woman we once saw in Palo who was wearing jeans and was barefoot or the guy in jeans and a flamingo pink t-shirt with his wife in a muu muu type sundress and flip flops were a little over the top.

I don't believe how much money you pay should have anything to do with it. I guess I have a problem with money equating special privilege.

But I understand those who don't want to dress up. DH is that way, but if he doesn't want to dress appropriately according to surroundings, then he can eat in his shorts and tank top at Pluto's. Whenever he says "well, we're spending a ton of money on this cruise, I should be able to blah blah blah", I tell him I guess that means the people in the Walt and Roy suites can shove you aside because they're paying a lot more money than we are. That's why I feel money should have nothing to do with it.

Anyway, I'm still trying to decide if we're going to Palo. The brunch sounds nice.

I'm glad Disney is doing this. And I think that cruisers (including myself) should follow the rules that they lay out. Its not like these rules are unknown to people going on the cruises. They're posted on the website, in the documents they provide, etc. If you don't want to dress up for dinner in the nice restaurants, then don't go to them. Its like going to a nice restaurant anywhere that has a dress code. You shouldn't expect to be admitted if you don't follow the rules. My two cents.

Unfortunately, this attitude is running rampant in our society. These are the same people who park in fire lanes, don't stop for right on red, run red lights/stopsigns... Hopefully, Disney has the guts to stand behind their rules - not only this but also adult pools and beaches. The CM's need to be supported by management and us as guests!

I think I understand what you are trying to say here, but I don't completely agree with this statement. People who pay more money do deserve special privledges. For example, spending more money can get you the privledge of staying in a larger room, boarding earlier, pre-made Palo reservations, etc. However, I think most of us can agree that money doesn't absolve you of the responsiblilty of having common courtesy and of following the rules.

Your telling me, because I would rather be casual than dressed up for a meal, that I am now a blatant law breaker. This logic is way out of line.

I'm not reading that casually inclined people are blatant law breakers. I'm reading that choosing to break the rules instead of choosing the options to keep within the rules makes for a rule breaker, or law breaker. This thread, along with the thread on smoking rules makes for some very interesting comparisons on people's opinions. If one guys is permitted to break the dress code in Palos, is another guy permitted to smoke in Palos?

i personally feel the rules should be adhered to as it's not fair to others that follow the rules

now.....if someone showed up in jeans & was allowed to enter the dining room, would it ruin my meal? of course not! why would i waste time worrying about what someone else has on?

i'm on vacation to have a good, carefree time & i refuse to let trivial "crap" bother me

enjoy your cruise and let the CM's deal with those dressed inappropriately

No one is saying there is anything wrong with preferring to dress casual, but if there are guidelines set they should be followed. Some people prefer to talk on cellphones in movies, go without shoes in a restaurant or sun bathe nude, but there are ruls there also.

Since topsiders is available I do not see that this should be an issue.

Everyone on the cruise pays a lot for their vacation but that doesn't give you the right to just do what you want since you paid.

I have always been on the side of it doesn't hurt to dress for dinner while on the ship. I also completely agree that Palo dinner should be held under stricter dress requirements. We have always made sure we were dressed appropiately and will continue to do so but on the last cruise it was getting tiring. I don't mind formal night so much because I love getting a family picture that night but semi-formal night was a bit too much. It's a sea day where you spend the day around the pool or in some other way completely relaxing. The last thing I want to do is head back to the room and get all dressed up. I know we can head to Topsiders but we enjoy dinner in the dining room with our servers so we will continue to dress appropriately. We just dreaded it more this year than others.

On the Oct. 30th cruise WWTBAM had major technical issues and it didn't appear to be a first. They had to read from cards which I think made it much more difficult for the contestant who somehow was still able to win themselves a free cruise. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the show being replaced.

Also, they may be allowing more smoking areas but we didn't notice cigarette smoke in any of the bars. One of the comedians in Rockin' D even asked if we had any smokers in the room and not a peep was heard. I did notice cigar smoke at the adult pool and on the last night in Diversions but that is because we had a group of cigar smokers on our cruise. This year was much better than past years when it comes to cigarette smoke.

I'm glad to see that they are going to start enforcing this. At any other restaurant in the world where the dress code states, "jacket required", you don't get in without a jacket, no matter how much you tip the maitre'd. So why should DCL make exceptions? Eating at Palo is a choice. If you don't have the right attire, don't eat there. It shouldn't be about the money, it should be about manners. Follow the rules and everyone has a nice time.

My take on all of this:

If I have to wear a jacket, I'll wear one. No biggie, though I'd prefer not to.

But here's my problem.

DCL, you want to enforce the rules? Then enforce the ones being broken where people are REALLY getting put out.

Saving 10 seats at a show, for example.

Saving 3 or 4 beach chairs at a pool (and never using them), for another.

Parents putting diapered children in the Mickey pool, for another.

These violations do more to put out another guest than all the people who can't seem to handle seeing someone else in a restaurant without a jacket, don't you think?

When I see DCL enforcing THOSE rules, then I'll worry about rule "credibility".

One change still needed is a place for the 18+ group to initially meet on the first day or 2. This group can certainly go to all the adult shows, but it would be great if they had a chance to meet and make some friends like the teens do. Without an offical meet of some kind they may never hook up-- this happened to my 18 yr old nephew and although he enjoyed the cruise, he didn't make the friends the other teens did and spent more time in our suite.
Let's hope this kind of thing is coming.
Glad to see some new kids activities-they needed them especially for the 8 yr olds. Too much just playing video game time

On the 11/11/04 Wonder they had a couple of meeting times for "Castaway Survivors Club - Exclusively for 18-25".
