"DCL Klondike Kruisers" - August 23, 2011

Just booked my trip. Couldn't decide what to do for a holiday and a friend mentioned that Disney was now cruising out of Vancouver - so I couldn't resist. Stop to visit the family in Vancouver, then on to a cruise.

My first time cruising so I'm a bit nervous, but I'm hoping my boys (8 & 4) will love it.

Everyone talking about phone coverage and such from the US, does realize that for the most part, you'll only be out of country while you are in Vancouver, otherwise we'll be in the US. Don't know if it's necessary to get an international coverage plan for a day or two. While it would be nice to have my phone, I actually lived with out it for 2 weeks in the med....so I guess I've had practice! :lmao:

We will be in Vancouver for 5 days so we will need data we plan on using our phones for GPS and general information.

Why don't you just use your ipad, then you don't have to pay for phone service for 5 days....who's gonna call ya anyway????

Even if my iPad had 3g (it doesn't) it's still the same data plan I have to buy through AT&T to use it internationally. It doesn't affect my phone either way. No one usually calls our cells when we're away unless it's an emergency anyway. I don't pay anything more for the phone, it's just data. Like the one Jim bought for his last summer for the Med.

Welcome, I am Joanne traveling with DH Roger, his two sisters and their husbands and our Disney friends Dan & Nancy, Leisha & Tom and her parents!!! No kids here, they are all grown up!!

Your kids will love it!!

Thanks for the welcome - I'm really glad I found this website, the information on here is amazing and very helpful to someone who has never cruised before. I'm already pondering what cruise we could take in 2012.

For those who have never been to Vancouver, (I lived there for over 10 years and my family is still there) I must say my absolute favourite activity to do there is rent bicycles and cycle around the seawall at Stanley Park. Breathtaking scenery and a great ride. My kids love it too - there are several places close to the park where you can rent bikes.

Also if you are in Vancouver for a few days - the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is on during that time (Aug 20th to Sept 5th) and is a great event - especially if you or your kids love rides - we will be there after the cruise.

We will be in Vancouver for three days prior. What should we not miss??

Also ask away, some of us have been on a few disney cruises and might know some of your answers.

Agreed, I live without my phone all the time, like every day at work with the bad coverage, and for weeks at a time while at Scout camp with the boys. Could care less for the phone coverage in Vancouver unless I want to call a restaurant for reservations or a cab to get there.

It is the data coverage for digital maps and directions, real time subway schedules, live augmented reality tour book descriptions of whatever I am looking at, and the like that I want while in Vancouver for a couple days. :3dglasses

I could also get out the compass and a topo map, but I pay for the privilege to volunteer and teach that at camp, :teacher: and pay for the convenience of my data plan when I am not. :wizard:

Here would be my top tourist destinations in Vancouver

1) Stanley Park - the jewel of Vancouver - whether you rent bikes or go for a walk on the seawall, it is a must. You can also hit the Aquarium or have a meal at the restaurant or take an offical tour around the park.

2) Granville Island - the farmers market, artsy type stores and boardwalk around it are incredible. There is also a small ferry system (really small) that runs around False Creek which you can board at Granville Island and go to other spots like Science World or the Space Centre - very fun.

3) Robson Street - there is nothing better than a warm summer night walking down Robson, popping into the various retail stores and having dinner at one of the many fantastic restaurants.

4) Harbour Centre - for a great view of the City - Harbour Centre is the place, they have an observation deck where you can see a 360 view of Vancouver, there is also a revolving restaurant up there.

5) Seabus to Londsdale Quay. From downtown you can catch the Seabus over to North Vancouver - great ride across Burrard Inlet and great little market at the other side.

Beyond that it depends what you are into, there is so many choices.
If you like touring, I'd suggest getting a daypass for the Skytrain and travelling all over the route. If you like shopping, there are lots of neat areas like gastown and chinatown and Pacific Centre (the main mall downtown).
If you want adventure, I'd go to the Capilano Suspension Bridges or rent a small sailboat at Jericho beach. The Vancouver Art Gallery is impressive and has great shows. If you like gardens - two close to downtown are the Vandusen Gardens and the Conservatory at Queen Elizabeth park - both are fantastic.

I will now be sending my invoice to Tourism Vancouver :goodvibes

Seriously, Vancouver is an amazing place and I still go there for holidays every year because there are so many amazing things to do.

For those staying at the Pan Pacific it's a great hotel, I've stayed there many time over the years for work and actually had my Grade 12 Graduation there. It is pricey but worth it and very central to all the activities downtown and of course a stones throw away from where we all need to board our cruise.

Kari

So we are avid campers, so packing light for all types of weather and living in small spaces will be no issue for us.

But I have questions around things like dining and the shows.

We have second seating for dinner. I think my kids will be fine with the late time, but I'm curious - how long does dinner service tend to take? Getting the boys to sit for over an hour might be a challenge. Also how many other guests do you tend to sit with? I've read that many parents send their kids to the play areas but since I'm a single parent that would leave me sitting by myself which is okay if there are other friendly table guests.

Since we have second seating for dinner, would we watch shows before dinner?

Also, I assume room service food is all included? (besides tipping).

Approximately how much cash should one take on the trip for tipping, expenses not covered, etc? Is there a way to get more cash if needed?

I think I read cell phones are not permitted on the boat, so I assume they have phones for calling home but are they expensive?

Hope I can help. Maybe some others have more recent insight into the workings, as our last Disney cruise was in 2009.

"We have second seating for dinner. I think my kids will be fine with the late time, but I'm curious - how long does dinner service tend to take?
-- At least an hour, maybe 90 minutes.

Also how many other guests do you tend to sit with?
--Depends on the table you have requested. The tables range from 4-8 people, although there are a few 2-tops and a few larger tables.

"I've read that many parents send their kids to the play areas"
-- Once your kids get a taste of the club, they will be gone. I think there is an eat and play option where you get the kids food quickly and then the staff takes them to club in the middle of dinner.

"Since I'm a single parent that would leave me sitting by myself which is okay if there are other friendly table guests."
-- Lots of friendly people on the ship. Depends on that table size how many people will be with you.

"Since we have second seating for dinner, would we watch shows before dinner?"
--Yes, although if you go to a different meal, like Palo, you could catch either show time.

Also, I assume room service food is all included? (besides tipping).
-- Most food is included in the price. There are some things on the menu and at stations around the ship that are not. Popcorn and candy outside the show, for instance, cost extra. Canned pop and bottled water are extra. All of this goes on your room tab. As far as tipping goes, it is your preference, but we bring along a stack of singles. We have a minimum tip of a couple bucks, and then use a tip-per-plate strategy for larger orders. Our kids really like the room service, and do snacks and a movie most nights.

Approximately how much cash should one take on the trip for tipping, expenses not covered, etc? Is there a way to get more cash if needed?
-- The only CASH thing I can think of on the ship is Room Service tips. Everything else can go on the room charge, now even the staff tips can. St. Somewhere just told me that room service tips can go on the card too. If you mean all expenses and are not planning on using a credit card, then the list of charges is long and distinguished. We can answer that depending on your expansion.

I think I read cell phones are not permitted on the boat, so I assume they have phones for calling home but are they expensive?
-- Cell phones are permitted on the boat. You will have to pay through the teeth, one arm, and your eldest child to cover the cost. You can also use the in-room phone to call. You will have to check on the cost, but I think it is in the $10's per minute to do it. FAR better off to use a pay phone in port with an international calling card. Not thinking you will pick up a Canadian cell tower in Alaska, but many of the excursions go into Canada, so you may be able to time your calls for when you are in "local roaming" instead of on the ship, or in US territory.

Thanks for the answers.

My credit card will be coming on the trip and is prepared to be abused.

Ah, I will get a calling card - good to know.

One more question - what range of prices are the excursions? I don't see that anywhere yet. Also are the kids rooms open during the ports, so if I wanted to go on an excursion alone, could I leave them to play?
Both my kids have been on dog sled rides, but I haven't, and would love to try it, although I'm thinking to pay for all 3 of us might be a bit much.

Kari

The prices for the excursions are in DCL's site. Most of the dog sled ones are around $550 a person. Most of the other ones we are interested in, are around 150-200 per person.

fabulous, thank you! We are staying at the Coal Coast Harbor, so we will be on Robson St.

If you don't get the tablesize you like you can always request a change. We had two extra people join us last year. They were a young couple and DCL sat them with two other young couples. Well all they wanted to talk about was religion and politics so they were very uncomfortable. So they moved and sat with us. So our table of 12 turned into a table of 14. It was a lot of fun!!!

Ahh, I found them.

Wow, lots of choices, my boys will love the train rides.

Are they strict about the ages? I see lots of options for 5 & up that my 4 year old would love.

ignore my last question - I see each of the excursions has slight variations and you can usually find an all age friendly one.

Although I'd love to go ziplining - have to wait for a few years till the kids are older.

Yes they are. It's for insurance purposes. Since DCL will know your kids ages you're stuck with what excursions your kids ages falls into. The only other option is to book that particular excursion privately.

Kari,
You could go on a zip lining excursion and leave your kids on the ship. (Some people are comfortable with this, some are not)

DCl is strict on the ages. You will not be able to book the excursion if the person in underage.

As for dining, if you found someone on our cruise that was traveling alone with kids, you could link reservations with them.
I am traveling solo in a few months and meet 2 other dissers, we arranged to sit together for dinner.
