Disney to start sailing out of Galveston in 2012

More cruise magic is coming to Galveston.
Disney Cruise Line will announce Wednesday morning that the Disney Magic will sail 12 seven-night cruises from the Port of Galveston to the Western Caribbean beginning Sept. 22, 2012. Ports of call include Grand Cayman and Mexico's Costa Maya and Cozumel.
Rates for the seven-night Western Caribbean cruise itinerary departing from Galveston will start at $840 per person for a standard inside stateroom, based on double occupancy, according to a Disney news release. One travel agent said not to expect sales for passage aboard the ship that sleeps up to 2,700 passengers.
"Mickey does not go on sale. That cheese is way too expensive," said Steve Cosgrove, owner of Dallas area Dynamic Travel.
Disney's Magic will join the Carnival Cruise Lines' ship called Carnival Magic, which begins sailing from Galveston on Nov. 14. Carnival's Triumph will also begin sailing out of Galveston on Oct. 6. Carnival's Ecstasy and Conquest now sail out of Galveston but will be repositioned to New Orleans.
Royal Caribbean International's Voyager of the Seas also calls on Galveston. And in December, Princess Cruises' Crown Princess will also sail out of Galveston.
Meanwhile, the Port of Houston Authority's $71 million Bayport Cruise Terminal still doesn't have a ship regularly calling on the facility that was built in 2009.
Cruise lines are more interested in sailing out of Galveston because its downtown shopping, hotels and Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark appeal to travelers while the closest major tourist attractions to Bayport are Kemah and NASA, said Cosgrove.

If this is true, I'm excited. Much shorter drive for me.

How about Norfolk, VA???

just had to put my 2 cents in....(won't cost that much to get to dry dock then....)

Robin & Angel "D" :thumbsup2

So both the Magic and the Fantasy will be doing the same Western itinerary during that time?

I second that !!! Norfolk or Baltimore would be awesome.....we can dream, can't we?

I'm super excited about the announcement. My only complaint--and it won't stop me from sailing--why aren't they stopping at Castaway Cay? I admit that I haven't looked on a map to see if it's feasible, but I was really hoping for that. Maybe they are trying to keep that exclusive to the Port Canaveral? :confused3

Interesting thought. I suspect they believe they can get people to spend more money at WDW than at CC.

i heard that the 8 day cruise from NYC will include CC (and nassau and WDW)..

Except that the announcement will include New York Departures also for DCL. That article was specific for Houston/Galveston.

It helps to be able to read. LOL. Thanks. :) My running route takes me by the big cruise ships every weekend. It'll be fun to see DCL in port. The 2 night cruises sound pretty fun, if I can't convince DH to get away longer.

But it will be sailing out of NY the same time as podcast cruise 3.0... Can I possible book 2 cruises in a 2 month period????

I like the part about "Mickey doesn't go on sale". Uh, yes it has, the last couple of years! It will be interesting to see how the same old destinations work from a new port.

Sayhello

well it's got to be true - the mayor of gavelston must know that DCL is coming to town or else he wouldn't have appeared on camera this way..

how far is galveston from houston?

40 miles from Downtown Houston to Harborside Drive. (where the Cruise Terminal is located) 30 Miles from Hobby Airport and 60 Miles for George Bush IAH Airport. 15 miles from the Kemah Waterfront, 17 miles from the Johnson Space Center. :thumbsup2

I may have to walk down to Hotel Icon at lunch :rolleyes1

Disney Cruise Line issued a special advisory Monday about a luncheon and presentation for invited guests at 11 am Wednesday in Houston's Hotel ICON.
