DCL 11/21/03 - Castaway Cay

We woke up early Friday morning anxious to arrive at Castaway Cay. We ate a quick breakfast at Topsiders after I quickly packed a bag for the day. It was wonderful and exciting watching The Magic pull up to the island. After seeing it in so many pictures and on the videos hundreds of times, I couldn’t believe that we were finally here in person. It was an absolutely beautiful picture perfect day.

After patiently waiting with Dana and her family on deck 1 for the doors to be opened, we walked down the gang plank and set foot ashore on Castaway Cay. I made a quick stop at the post office to mail a little post card that Mickey gave me and then we all set off to explore the island. We took William to Scuttle’s Cove to play in the sand and the shade for the morning. We then walked to the end of the family beach on the swimming lagoon. We missed the last hammock by a minute but set up under an umbrella and were very happy with our spot. We actually had a wonderful view until a family decided that they didn’t like being in the back row and dragged their beach chairs right in front of us in the small strip of sand. We decided that it wasn’t worth make a fuss over and just made sure that we had enough room for the smaller chairs & float in front of us. The funny thing was out of five people, only one of them even sat in the chairs.

Mike got a float for the day and Kaitlyn set out to find sea shells. She made a beautiful Cinderella sand castle. She loved playing in the water. It was so clear and calm. After a little convincing she got in the float with Mike and really enjoyed it. Fairly big fish swam along the shore inbetween the people in the water. I went out in the tube one time and the strong current pushed me past the wooden pier play area. I fell into the water trying to turn it around then held on and started kicking with all my might to get back to shore. I didn’t make very much progress even though I was working so hard. I decided to flag down the life guard the next time she turned to me but two guys started walking towards me carrying kids. I asked if they were touching the bottom since I would then feel that I could get there soon. They asked if I needed help and one came over and pulled me to where I could touch the bottom. I was never more grateful to anyone before. I was exhausted and sat on the lounge chair for a while catching my breath and waiting for my legs to return to normal.

We spent the day sitting next to Gordon and Loraine. It was nice having a chance to talk with them after chatting so much on the boards. We checked on William but he had already gone to lunch and wanted to stay in the club, so we went to Cookie’s for lunch. The ribs were amazing and the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream was out of this world! I went to the shops after lunch while Mike took Kaitlyn back to the beach. I picked up William so that he could play in the water some too. He told me that he hadn’t eaten anything at lunch so I picked up a plain hotdog for him. He went out with Mike right away in the tube and played with Carly for the rest of the afternoon.

Kaitlyn and I reluctantly headed back to the ship at 3 to clean up. I picked up a necklace for William first. William wasn’t interested in being in the kid show but I somehow managed to get him checked into the OC and he ran off to play. He kept saying that he didn’t want to go up on stage and the counselors told him that he didn’t have to. Since he was at ease I was able to leave to clean up for the show and dinner. We passed William in the hall and he was all smiles. He defiantly looked happy to be a part of the show now. He was in the front row and beamed when Lyndelle pointed us out to him in the audience then waved to us. I gave him a thumbs up. There were a few nice pictures of him and Kaitlyn in the slide show. Mickey came out after the slide show and sang with the kids. We have some good video of William’s stage debut.

We rushed to pick up William at the OC then go to the cabin to dress him and meet Mike and Kaitlyn for dinner. We took pictures of the kids with all our servers and gave them their cards. All the kids stayed to enjoy their last meal together in Animator’s Palate. I enjoyed the red snapper at dinner. We ordered all of the deserts and shared between the four of us. I really liked the celebration cake and ordered one to go. Mike took it to the room and I went to the club to sign William in.

We went to the Remember the magic show. Gary DeLena was hilarious and we were really enjoying Rich Purpura when what I thought was someone’s cell phone went off. It didn’t stop. We then realized that it was our beeper from the OC. William hadn’t beeped us before so I was concerned since he had only been there half an hour. I excused myself and got up to leave and find out what had happened when Rich Purpura suddenly starts talking to me. He said “Excuse me, Lady! Where are you going?” I just said sorry but my son has paged us. He then said “Well, you are going to have to leave then. Go on! Get out!” I hated to miss any of his act but my concern was greater. It turned out that he was just thirsty and a little tired. We went back to the show and were able to see the characters take their final bows so William was happy.

We returned to the room to pack after making plans with Mary and Brian to meet for breakfast at Topsiders after 7. I was up packing until midnight. I did manage to get out of the room in time to see the characters sing “See you real soon” in the atrium. Our photo package still had two pictures left and I had to chose from three that were acceptable to us. I liked one of them but couldn’t decide between the other two. We had digital shots with both of the characters that were just as nice so I just put one to the side. The CM marked my card and put all three pictures in the folder telling me to have a nice evening. That was a nice little bonus since they would have just thrown it away. On the way back to the room I noticed people gathering the silver Mickey heads that had been sprayed in the atrium at the end of the farewell song and joined in collecting some for the scrapbook. I filled out the evaluation form while enjoying the celebration cake.

I sadly turned out the light knowing that this would be our last evening spent onboard the ship and the end of our long awaited vacation.
